The healthcare profession has been experiencing dramatic change due to healthcare reform and there continues to be significant challenges on the horizon for healthcare leaders. Healthcare leaders will be facing challenges such as a large number of the work force reaching the age of retirement, a decrease in people entering into the healthcare profession, and a 22-28% increase in demand for healthcare services through 2020. Existing and future healthcare leaders will need to poses a high level of knowledge and skill in healthcare delivery in order to meet these challenges. Colleges and universities are challenged to move the needle on student retention and success, especially in online programs. Student success coaching is effective when working in collaboration with professors, support staff and tutors to ensure that students who are potentially at risk can succeed. Success coaches would follow academic alerts issued by instructors at the onset of an at risk student. At risk conditions include missing or low grades on assignments, lack of participation in class, and attendance alerts. Success coaches do not cause a hardship or disturb the classroom environment but can serve as a resource to students who …

A significant number of students transfer from institutions of higher education which creates challenges for both the student and the institution of higher education. The purpose of this study is to investigate transfer students, provide challenges for transfer Students, and provide recommendations for student affairs professionals of how to best serve transfer students. This study provides insight into previous research on this topic, recommendations focused on student success (graduation) of transfer students, and barriers experienced by transfer students to prepare student affairs professionals with the information to assist this student population.

Four Decades Of Systems Science Teaching And Research At Psu, Wayne Wakeland
Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series
Systems science (SySc) is defined, and a brief background is provided regarding some of the systems science-related societies, conferences, journals, research institutes, and educational programs. The SySc program at Portland State University in Portland, OR, USA, is described in detail, including its history, curriculum, students, faculty, and degrees granted. Dissertation topics are summarized via word diagrams created from dissertation titles over the years. MS degrees, student placement, and undergraduate courses are also mentioned, and future plans for the program are described including its support for sustainability education.

The Construct Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: School Districts’ Appropriations And Reconceptualizations Of Tpack, Judi Harris, Mark J. Hofer

Despite debates about the specific parameters of its eight subcomponents, TPACK is generally understood within university-based teacher education communities as the knowledge needed to incorporate technologies—especially digital tools and resources—effectively in teaching and learning. How do professional development providers working within primary and secondary schools and districts conceptualize and operationalize TPACK? Our study of educational technology-related professional development in seven North American schools and districts in seven states/provinces found that educational leaders’ discussion and operationalization of the TPACK construct differs from that of university-based researchers in intriguing and important ways. Shedding Gender Stigmas: Work-Life Balance Equity In The 21st Century, Erica M. Southworth

The gender stigma of work-life balance (WLB) policies as concessions for mothers and female caregivers originated with the push by the Women’s Movement for gender workplace equity in the late 20th century. Unfortunately, this perception continues in the 21st century and retains the additional stigma of employee participation in these policies–—regardless of gender–—as a detrimental career move. Thus, home and work responsibilities for professionals of all genders who desire more occupational flexibility remain unreconciled.
