Factors Influencing Advanced Stem Course Enrollment For Females, Marissa Erickson

This action research study investigated the reasons that female students enroll in high school elective STEM classes in a rural Iowa high school. The participants were 52 students currently enrolled in an earth science class who responded to an anonymous survey centered around three themes: stereotypes, females in education, and the roles that adults and peers play. The survey clearly showed no significant differences between the perceptions of male and female participants. The results of the survey found that all students, both male and female, do not believe the traditional stereotypes held regarding STEM classes and careers. The results also …

This action research study investigated how an authentic learning experience impacted the motivation and engagement of students toward finding intrinsic value in meaningful work in a sophomore English classroom at a private Christian high school in the Midwest. The participants were 57 sophomores at the high school taking required English 10. The students participated in an authentic learning experience (ALE) designed by their teacher in which they were split into 10 teams, each team writing and designing one issue the sophomore class’s newspaper. This action research study investigated the effects of different types of instruction on student learning of historical thinking. There are several instructional methods to teaching history but most fall into two major approaches: chronological or thematic. This study used twenty-eight high school students in two sections of a junior-senior World History course. Teaching has traditionally been a lonely enterprise. Working in isolation is commonplace. Collaboration among teachers is rare, particularly at the high school level. How can Christian high schools be more purposeful in developing an ethos in which collaboration among faculty is encouraged and expected? Teachers will need to be taught how to collaborate. Teachers will have to develop attitudes of openness and trust. Administrative leadership will need to implement structures and strategies that promote a collaborative environment.
