Due to the low economic area from which the subjects for this experiment were chosen, many were lacking in environmental experiences which contributed to their growth in reading skills and interests in the primary grades. This experiment was devised as a means to study reading difficulties in children from a low socioeconomic area, while, at the same time, parents were used to help overcome those problems. The main purpose of this study was to compare and contrast improvement in reading interest and reading skills in matched groups of subjects of an experimental and a control group.

The purpose of this study was to determine the number of critical reading skills included in six basal reading series and how many of these skills each series contained. It was also the purpose of this study to determine the grade level at which each specific skill was introduced and further how many of these skills were introduced at the grade one level.

In this study a method was explored that suggests a plan that can be used in a regular classroom to benefit all low-achieving students.

Past experience has revealed a definite need to release children, at least partially, from the traditional ability groupings and allow more flexible groupings. The past also revealed that individual children's unique interests and abilities were not being provided for. Since the teaching of reading occupies a central position in the elementary grades, and since children have a wide range of reading abilities and interests, an investigation of individualized reading was prompted.
