. The REO (re-entry option) Program was created in response to an overwhelming need to address severe disciplinary referral patterns and the disproportionate impact on students of color. It is rare that the underlying issue that may have precipitated the undesirable behavior is considered, and even rarer that a referral to clinical staff is the response. In the REO program is an intervention designed to be initiated by a teacher who recognizes or experiences a student in pre-crisis or a student a student who believes they need to a safe place to self-regulate to prevent escalating behavior. Georgia has a growing refugee community (Division of Family and Children Services, n.d.). Successful refugee resettlement and K-12 education is dependent on school personnel understanding the emotional wellness and challenges of this population. Advocating on behalf of this population, this presentation will address the state of refugees in Georgia. Information and discussion will address the various emotional roadblocks experienced by refugees that can be an impediment to successful integration in K-12 schools. Presenters will also provide participants with available resources to address these challenges.

A Socio-Culturally Responsive Pedagogical Approach To Advance Migrant Students Literacy, Alma D. Stevenson, Scott Beck

This presentation describes an innovative summer literacy program for intermediate and middle-level children of migrant farm workers that presented them with over two dozen children’s picture storybooks with migrancy themes, and systematically documented their responses to the books. Using these mentor texts and their responses as scaffolding, the students collaborated to create semi-autobiographical, illustrated narratives about growing up as migrants.
