This dialogical paper explores Ashwani Kumar’s concept of music as meditative inquiry and its implications for teaching, learning, and living. The notion of music as meditative inquiry is rooted in Kumar’s journey of learning, composing, and researching Indian classical music. This paper makes use of an emerging methodological framework called dialogical meditative inquiry (DMI), which has been theorized by Kumar. Existing teaching tools for learning software in undergraduate graphic design programs include videos, lengthy tutorial books, and teacher-led in class demos. Based on several interviews with faculty at differently sized colleges and universities, I ordered the preceding methods by popularity of use. Most instructors in four year graphic design programs expected students to learn Adobe software and HTML/CSS for screen design through video-based learning outside of class. When I interviewed students, their least preferred method for learning software was videos, followed by textbook tutorials. As the global environment becomes increasingly more turbulent and competitive, creativity becomes the focus when preparing current students and future citizens to deal with uncertainty and to adapt to continuous change both personally and professionally. The purpose of the study was to understand how student creative thinking could be increased in a university classroom. Creativity exercises that can be incorporated in various courses were developed. The exercises formed four learning modules: (a) what is creativity, (b) recognizing and identifying opportunities, (c) generating ideas, and (d) evaluating creative ideas.
