To Discovery And Beyond: Using Workflow Automation As An Opportunity For Collaboration And Education, Rebecca B. French

Libraries

This poster describes a project to automate portions of JMU Libraries' workflow for distributing Special Collections finding aids to various discovery platforms. Through the development of a custom Python app called Spaceport, we were able to greatly improve the efficiency and sustainability of this process while also providing a more consistent discovery experience for our patrons. The project also had broad impacts in other areas. Our incremental and collaborative approach provided space for professional development related to the project, supported evolving project goals and the process of adapting to the new workflow, and strengthened relationships between departments. In addition to ...

Teaching With Local Primary Sources, Molly Castro, Katharine Labuda, Rebecca Bakker

Works of the FIU Libraries

This workshop explored how to best promote the use of special collections and archives to the teaching community of South Florida. The presenters conducted this training to connect South Florida area teachers with resources for using primary source material in the classroom as part of a larger grant-funded project entitled, “Finding Our Place in History: Engaging Students with Local History through Online Primary Source Sets.” This workshop for educators introduced FIU’s primary source set and highlighted techniques for engaging with digital primary sources in the K-12 classroom.

Cunningham Collection Finding Aid: Container List, Christiane M J Hennequin

ACER Historical Documents

This document provides background information to the Finding Aid to the Cunningham Collection. Dr Kenneth Stewart Cunningham (1890 – 1976) was a leading Australian educationalist and educational researcher who was instrumental in the creation and development of the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER). After his death in 1976, Dr Cunningham’s daughter, Lesley Cunningham, became the custodian of her father’s personal papers. Much of this material was donated to the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) by Lesley Cunningham a few years before her death.

Bingo! Engaging History Of Science Students With Primary Sources, Leigh Rupinski Apr 2020

Bingo! Engaging History Of Science Students With Primary Sources, Leigh Rupinski

Scholarly Papers and Articles

This case study examines the process of creating an interactive and engaging lesson plan for the History of Science course, HSC 201: The Scientific Revolution. History of Science students tend to be undergraduates majoring in science or medical related fields, rather than the humanities, who need to fulfill an intensive writing or general education requirement. For most, if not all of them, this session would be the first time they experienced hands-on interaction with historical resources. Accordingly, the archivist sought to create a less traditional lesson plan that would foster a sense of fun and interest in the materials.

On-The-Job Information Literacy: A Case Study Of Student Employees At Purdue University Archives And Special Collections, Tracy Grimm, Neal Harmeyer Feb 2020

On-The-Job Information Literacy: A Case Study Of Student Employees At Purdue University Archives And Special Collections, Tracy Grimm, Neal Harmeyer

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

This chapter presents Purdue Archives and Special Collections as a case study in growing an organizational culture committed to teaching information literacy parallel to classroom learning through student worker experiential learning. While student employment or internships may not traditionally be considered co-curricular activities, Purdue University Archives and Special Collections provides an environment not only for students to gain pre-professional experience but also expertise, confidence, and competence in information; for many students, this preparation has resulted in careers in museums, archives, libraries, and cultural heritage institutions. The result is a new approach to student employment: one designed to establish an environment ...

Etd Plus: When Non-Traditional Is The New Normal, What's The Norm For Etd Programs?, Martin Halbert May 2019

Etd Plus: When Non-Traditional Is The New Normal, What's The Norm For Etd Programs?, Martin Halbert

2019 Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The 2014-2017 ETDplus project brought together a diverse range of national stakeholders in the ETD curation process (professors, libraries, and service providers) to improve ETD policies and practices around research data and complex digital object management. The project research pivoted on the question “How will institutions ensure the longevity and availability of ETD research data and complex digital objects (e.g., software, multimedia files) that comprise an integral component of student theses and dissertations?” The research conducted in the course of the project revealed many emerging trends regarding ETDs, illuminating a significantly changed landscape of ETD curation needs in the ...

Combining Active Learning Exercises, Blake Spitz Jan 2019

Combining Active Learning Exercises, Blake Spitz

University Librarians Presentations Series

This lightning talk offers an example of combining active learning exercises to achieve multiple learning outcomes (some simple, such as resource identification, and some more complex, such as understanding archival silences and power dynamics in research access). The class was in Special Collections, but the active learning exercises – one a version of “speed-dating,” and the other a version of exhibit or bibliography curation – could easily be used in a more general library information literacy class. These activities are not new, but I had never combined them in this way before, and I have found, as a result, that I am ...

Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner, Antje Mays Nov 2018

Future And Value: The Library As Strategic Partner, Antje Mays

Library Presentations

Broader economic trends spawn budget pressures for education and libraries, prompting a plethora of studies on the value and relevance of libraries. Numerous reports on economic decline in libraries and studies with mixed pronouncements on the value of libraries have led to a negative self-image within the library profession. Yet libraries' leadership in connecting learners to knowledge is at the heart of producing many of the key skills sorely needed in robust societies and economies. Librarianship has many untapped opportunities for positioning itself as a prominent strategic partner. This paper outlines current research on the economic and societal context for ...
