ADVANCE Reports

Experiences with UNM’s parental leave policy C215 have been evaluated using the ADVANCE 2018 Main Campus Faculty Climate Survey, a series of junior faculty interviews, and concerns brought to the ADVANCE leadership. Key findings are:

  • Women and STEM faculty are more hesitant to use family-leave policies, and perceive greater disadvantage in using them than men and non-STEM faculty
  • Sharing of information about, and implementation of, parental leave varies significantly between units
  • The attitude of the department chair and senior faculty strongly influence the experience of faculty who use parental leave
  • Appropriately implemented, the parental leave policy contributes to faculty recruitment …

Neutrosophic Linear Programming Problems, Florentin Smarandache, Abdel-Nasser Hussian, Mai Mohamed, Mohamed Abdel-Baset Jan 2018

Neutrosophic Linear Programming Problems, Florentin Smarandache, Abdel-Nasser Hussian, Mai Mohamed, Mohamed Abdel-Baset

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

Smarandache presented neutrosophic theory as a tool for handling undetermined information. Wang et al. introduced a single valued neutrosophic set that is a special neutrosophic sets and can be used expediently to deal with real-world problems, especially in decision support. In this paper, we propose linear programming problems based on neutrosophic environment. Neutrosophic sets are characterized by three independent parameters, namely truth-membership degree (T), indeterminacy-membership degree (I) and falsity-membership degree (F), which are more capable to handle imprecise parameters. We also transform the neutrosophic linear programming problem into a crisp programming model by using neutrosophic set parameters. To measure the …

Motivating Employed Professionals, Kenneth M. Kamerman Jun 1970

Motivating Employed Professionals, Kenneth M. Kamerman

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

This study is directed to the problem of determining the properties of a task motivation method for employed professionals that will increase their productivity without creating employe-supervisor problems and without adding administrative burdens to the organization. The second problem is to identify a task motivation method which possesses the properties identified in the solution to the first problem. A descriptive-analytic approach to solve the first problem involves a review of human relations observations and conclusions bearing on motivation of employed professionals. The solution to the second problem identifies the contingency management motivation method, used in progressive education settings, as a …

Satisfaction, Dissatisfaction, And Self-Actualization Among Top Level Employees Of The City Of Albuquerque - An Appraisal Of Organizational Climate., Vern H. Curtis May 1970

Satisfaction, Dissatisfaction, And Self-Actualization Among Top Level Employees Of The City Of Albuquerque - An Appraisal Of Organizational Climate., Vern H. Curtis

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

Having problem areas and potential problem areas identified within one's organization would be welcomed by most, if not all, administrators. It was the purpose of this thesis to identify and isolate any potential problem area or areas concerning high level personnel of the City of Albuquerque; also to establish any relationship between self-actualization and Rensis Likert’s organizational climate model. The primary tools for determining problem areas were a self-actualization test and Likert’s semantic differentials which characterize an organization's climate. Each department in the City was compared to the City in total to determine any differences with respect to those two …

Marketing Barriers To Entry In The Ready-To-Eat Breakfast Cereal Industry., George C. T. Lin

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

The purposes of this study were: (a) to explain the nature of the existing bilateral oligapolistic situation in the ready-to-eat (RTE) breakfast cereal industry; (b) to clarify the role of marketing as an instrument in the product and service competition within the industry; and (c) to develop an explanatory framework which describes the causal relationships among the possible marketing barriers as well as the attendant risk and uncertainty in new cereal investment.

Although the rate of return on cereal investment appears to be relatively high and attractive, there are substantial barriers to entry. Industrial organization theory (i.e .. scale economy, …

A Behavioral Experiment On The Bayesian Decision Norm, James Ying-Sheng Huang Jan 1970

A Behavioral Experiment On The Bayesian Decision Norm, James Ying-Sheng Huang

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

This study attempts to explore the possibilities of developing Bayesian decision theory as a descriptive behavioral model for depicting and predicting the general and basic rationality underlying managerial decision-making behavior under certain circumstances. A laboratory controlled experiment approach was employed for this study, In May of 1969, forty sophomores on the campus of the University of New Mexico were selected to serve as subjects. None of the subjects had knowledge of Bayesian statistical decision theory. Each subject was required to make Independent managerial decisions based on intuition. The experiment consisted essentially of two different types of experimental designs, one with …

An Application Of The Factor Analytic Approach To The Construction Of An Overall Business Activity Index., Jay Quigley Butler May 1969

An Application Of The Factor Analytic Approach To The Construction Of An Overall Business Activity Index., Jay Quigley Butler

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

Business economists attempting to determine and to describe the changes in the business activity of metropolitan areas and other geographic sections are seriously limited in their work by the absence of a satisfactory Overall Business Activity Index (OBAI). Although there are several methods for constructing such a composite index, this thesis examines the application of factor analysis to the construction of an OBAI. The difficulty of applying this statistical technique has been in developing a set of weights for combining the extracted factors into an OBAI. Among the objectives of such an overall index are that it should preserve the …

Bank Asset Management: A Study Of A Linear Program Model Developed By D. Chambers And A. Charnes, Christopher Crosby Inman May 1969

Bank Asset Management: A Study Of A Linear Program Model Developed By D. Chambers And A. Charnes, Christopher Crosby Inman

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Bank management is constantly faced with the task of maximizing asset profitability within the constraints of liquidity and safety. In an attempt to aid management in the solution of this problem, several asset management models and theories have been developed. One such model was developed by D. Chambers and A. Charnes and was presented in the July, 1961 issue of Management Science. This model utilizes a linear programming approach to determine an optimal asset portfolio which maximizes profits while satisfying a bank's liquidity and safety needs. The purpose of this thesis is to critique this model. …

Risk And Uncertainty As Barriers To Entry To The Ready-To-Eat Breakfast Cereal Industry In The United States., James Hyland Ryan Jun 1968

Risk And Uncertainty As Barriers To Entry To The Ready-To-Eat Breakfast Cereal Industry In The United States., James Hyland Ryan

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

For nearly 20 years, 95% of the ready-to-eat breakfast cereal industry has been dominated by six manufactures – Kellogg, General Mills, General Foods, National Biscuit, Ralston Purina, and Quaker Oats. Consumer demand for ready-to-eat (hereafter designated RTE) breakfast cereals increased from 4.6 to 5.9 pounds per capita from 1954 to 1964. The total volume of cereal produced rose from 747 billion pounds in 1954 to 1126 billion pounds in 1964, a volume increase of 51%. During this same period, the pounds of cereal consumed per household increased from 15.9 to 20.6 or 28%.

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Changing Price Levels On Financial Statements, Robert Donald Clyde Jun 1968

An Analysis Of The Effect Of Changing Price Levels On Financial Statements, Robert Donald Clyde

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

When prices change significantly, conventional accounting reports tend to become inaccurate and misleading. Those who use the reports are likely to be misled. Adjustments for price changes cannot readily be made by the reader of financial statements because of the limited information available to him.

Risk Classes And The Required Rate Of Return On The Common Stock Of A Firm., Robert Lee Cheek Jun 1968

Risk Classes And The Required Rate Of Return On The Common Stock Of A Firm., Robert Lee Cheek

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

This paper proposes a method of examining the assumption that there are homogeneous risk classes of firms which will have the same required rate of return on the common stock, the risk classes being defined as those firms whose expected average income is subject to the same degree of uncertainty. This assumption, proposed by Franco Modigliani and Merton H. Miller in their famous work on the cost of capital to a firm, has tended to be neglected in the empirical studies, and in particular the tests of Alexander Barges, which have been made during the recent years. The method proposed …

An Empirical Test Of Financial Theory Relating To Utilities In The Capital Market, Gary Owen Glenn May 1968

An Empirical Test Of Financial Theory Relating To Utilities In The Capital Market, Gary Owen Glenn

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

By observation of the average cost of new debt capital, average market price per share of common equity, average earnings per share of common equity, and average price-earnings ratios, it is apparent that utilities are facing a deteriorating competitive situation in the capital market in relation to industrials. It was the purpose of this study to determine if these deteriorating characteristics were statistically significant or whether they were strictly attributable to chance. It was also to be determined if the movements in the utilities' average cost of new debt capital were significantly related in a statistical sense to the movements …

An Empirical Study Of Superior-Subordinate Personal Values And Performances Evaluation., Robert T.G Lassiter May 1968

An Empirical Study Of Superior-Subordinate Personal Values And Performances Evaluation., Robert T.G Lassiter

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

Although numerous performance evaluation techniques have been developed, such as graphic rating scales, check lists, paired comparisons, critical incident, etc., there remains an element of human judgement in their application, ad judgment is affected by personal values. The relationship of value or orientations to interpersonal relations, understanding, communications, decision making, and the evaluation of decision has clear-cut implications to the problems associated with performance evaluation. In the administrative setting, the white collar worker' performance is interpersonal relations, communications, and decision making. This is particularly true of the 68 people who participated in this study, since they were all engaged in …

The Emerging Importance Of Mental Health Programs In Industry And The Implications Of Related Legislative Action., Jack D. Rex Mar 1968

The Emerging Importance Of Mental Health Programs In Industry And The Implications Of Related Legislative Action., Jack D. Rex

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

At the close of the nineteenth century, the accepted common law defenses of Contributory Negligence, Assumption of Risk, and Negligent Acts of Fellow Servants were interpreted by the courts as being too harsh on the claims of inured workers. As a consequence, the principle of common law declaring the employer responsible for the injury or death of employees resulting form a negligent act on his part became the accepted recourse. By 1910, many state legislatures had adopted the principle that employees do not assume the risk of their employment, thus setting the stage for the enactment of Workmen’s Compensation laws …

A Queuing Theory Approach To Short-Haul Movements Under Constraints Of Time, Volume, And Unknown Behavioral Considerations., James Gerard Morris Aug 1967

A Queuing Theory Approach To Short-Haul Movements Under Constraints Of Time, Volume, And Unknown Behavioral Considerations., James Gerard Morris

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

The problem of parking in general and student parking in particular has become a matter of considerable interest on the University of New Mexico campus. Open parking space within a five-minute walking distance to central classroom buildings has become virtually non-existent during the peak hours of classroom activity. Evidence of student discontent over this problem is readily apparent in their letters to the student newspaper. Unbeknownst to most students, the situation is due to worsen. The University of New Mexico architect and Chief Planner, Robert Riley, has stated that within three years, no central campus parking will be available to …

An Investigation Of The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Method Of Data Validation To Reduce Buyer Inspection Costs., John R. Costello May 1967

An Investigation Of The Kolmogorov-Smirnov Method Of Data Validation To Reduce Buyer Inspection Costs., John R. Costello

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

One of the major functions of any inspection, quality control or quality assurance organization is to provide assurance to management that their products are of adequate quality. Furthermore, management desires this function to be performed at the minimum cost commensurate with its objectives. It has been reported that inspection organizations used sampling inspection prior to 1920 to achieve their objectives but the sampling plans used were arbitrary with little scientific basis. During the 1920's the Western Electric Company made a major breakthrough with the development of the Shewhart control chart and the Dodge-Romig sampling tables. However, it was not until …

The Susceptibility Of Price Declines Among High Quality Common Industrial Stocks And Other Listed Common Industrial Stocks During Significant Market Declines, Walter D. Sanborn, Iii Apr 1967

The Susceptibility Of Price Declines Among High Quality Common Industrial Stocks And Other Listed Common Industrial Stocks During Significant Market Declines, Walter D. Sanborn, Iii

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

All common stock investments are subject to market declines regardless of favorable prospects for growth of earnings, dividends, or other factors contributing to market performance. In times of significant market declines, even the highest quality stock with excellent appreciation potential may decline. A qualified security analyst may find that stock "XXX' is a high quality stock and recommend its purchase, but if the stock market falls, the competent investor will lose wealth, at least temporarily, in spite of his careful job of security analysis. If investors had an analytical tool to help predict these declines, they would be able to …

Price-Determining Factors In The Processed Fruit And Vegetable Industry, Charles H. Hatfield Jr. Apr 1967

Price-Determining Factors In The Processed Fruit And Vegetable Industry, Charles H. Hatfield Jr.

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

The lack of any firm basis for pricing decisions in the processed fruit and vegetables industry was first brought to my attention by contact with some executives of the California Packing Corporation where I was employed for two years. Their consensus was that available supply was the most important factor in such determination, even though its relationship to price was only realized in a vague, ever-shifting manner. It is hypothesized both that a substantial basis on which to place pricing decisions could be determined and further that a demand function, based on utility analysis, would provide such a description of …

Criteria For Effective Appraisal Of Junior Executives, Albert I. Pierce Jan 1967

Criteria For Effective Appraisal Of Junior Executives, Albert I. Pierce

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

The emphasis and interest in effective and efficient management that exists in our present American culture has never before been equaled. The effects of the quality of management are felt by virtually everyone. Whether management is viewed from the standpoint of owner, employee, consumer or taxpayer, whether management is being observed in the private or public sectors of our economy, there can be little question that the quality of management has a strong impact and directive influence on our society.

A Computerized Partnership Accounting Model For Use On The Ibm 360 With Applications To Teaching Beginning Accounting, Janet Eck Sep 1966

A Computerized Partnership Accounting Model For Use On The Ibm 360 With Applications To Teaching Beginning Accounting, Janet Eck

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

Students of business and businessmen no longer require assurance that the digital computer will play a vital role in commercial activity. Simple observation will substantiate the acceptance of electronic data processing by private enterprise. At the university, the necessity of providing an elementary introduction to data processing for business students has become clear. Unfortunately, education in data processing does not always cross disciplinary boundaries. All too often, a student acquires a knowledge of computers in one course and continues to make tedious manual computations in another. Efforts to integrate data processing and accounting education have, to date, been minimal. It …

Theory Of Perpetuating Deprivation Factors: A Study Of Oppressive Factors In Selection And Payment Of Negro Personnel., Wilbur W. Bigelow Sep 1966

Theory Of Perpetuating Deprivation Factors: A Study Of Oppressive Factors In Selection And Payment Of Negro Personnel., Wilbur W. Bigelow

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

In surveying the industrial scene one becomes impressed with the economic deprivat1on of the American Negro. In most cases, Negroes find their pay checks substantially smaller than those or their white counterparts. Negroes are usually the first to be released during production cut backs regardless of their productivity. It is to this problem that the paper directs its attention. Chapter I introduces the problem in some depth and then hypothesizes a number of causes. Herein a causation model is used to illustrate how a series or factor responses may initiate the problem. The remainder or the thesis attempts to establish …

The Use Of Value Engineering In The Aerospace Industry, Ranson J. Gaskill Jul 1966

The Use Of Value Engineering In The Aerospace Industry, Ranson J. Gaskill

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this paper is to exemplify the techniques and uses of value engineering and to evaluate their significance in the aerospace industry. The recent development of value engineering stems from several basic factors. The highly competitive nature of the aerospace industry since World War II has placed increasing importance on cost-oriented efforts. At the same time the characteristics of the industry require exceptional levels of reliability and product research as well as compressed delivery schedules. Fiscal procurement policy changes by the government have also emphasized the increasing concern over aerospace costs. Considering the fact that government aerospace expendtures …

A Technique For The Evaluation Of Competitive Marketing Strategies, Roger D. Eck Jun 1966

A Technique For The Evaluation Of Competitive Marketing Strategies, Roger D. Eck

Anderson School of Management Theses & Dissertations

As originally conceived, this thesis would have defended a preferred marketing strategy for use in the United States for electrical impulse counters. Such as effort would have required the collection of sufficient data to permit the formulation and testing of a model of the market for electrical impulse counters. With a defensible model- -that is, a model of acceptable accuracy- -the extent to which each of several alternative marketing strategies might satisfy a specified set of objectives could have been evaluated. Investigation indicated that the required data could not be obtained at an acceptable cost in time. In its present …
