Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore social media’s impact on organizational knowledge quality through the theoretical lens of social capital and resource exchange. Design/methodology/approach – Theory-confirming, quantitative study using panel data collected through web-based survey Findings – The results show that while social media affect structural capital and cognitive capital directly, it only affects relational capital indirectly through structural and cognitive capital. Moreover, overall social media and the enhanced social capital do help promote organizational efforts in knowledge management, which subsequently leads to higher level of organizational knowledge quality. Global Delivery Models: The Role Of Talent, Speed And Time Zones In The Global Outsourcing Industry, Stephan Manning, Marcus Larsen, Pratyush Bharati

We investigate antecedents and contingencies of location configurations supporting global delivery models (GDMs) in global outsourcing. GDMs are a new form of IT-enabled client-specific investment promoting services provision integration with clients by exploiting client proximity and time-zone spread allowing for 24/7 service delivery and access to resources. Based on comprehensive data we show that providers are likely to establish GDM configurations when clients value access to globally distributed talent pools and speed of service delivery, and in particular when services are highly commoditized. Findings imply that coordination across time zones increasingly affects international operations in business-to-business and born-global industries.

By giving a voice to users in the design process of information systems, they often feel more empowered and engaged. The inclusion of users with disabilities in the design process, however, can be markedly more difficult. User profiling allows a user's preferences and interests to be captured and represented. However, for a user with severe motor disabilities, information related to his or her user profile must be obtained through a variety of means. Learning how to program is difficult, and failure and attrition rates in college level programming classes remain at an unacceptably high rate. Organizations rely on password-based authentication methods to control access to many Web-based systems. In a recent study, we developed a benchmarking instrument to assess the authentication methods used in these contexts. Our instrument developed included extensive literature foundation and an expert panel assessment. This paper reports on the development of the instrument and the expert panel assessment. The initial draft of the instrument was derived from literature to assess 1) password strength requirements, 2) password usage methods, and 3) password reset requirements. The article discusses ways to make users mindful of Information Technology (IT) security. Security awareness programs ensure that employees understand the importance of security and the adverse consequences of its failure; they also remind users of the procedures to be followed. Awareness training is vital to keeping the idea of IT security uppermost in employees' minds. While federal agencies in the U.S. are required to train employees in computer security awareness, such training is voluntary in the private sector. It is, however, no less vital. Every company should integrate a security awareness program into the IT training program.

Organizations continue to rely on password-based authentication methods to control access to many Web-based systems. Operating System obsolescence is widely considered an important factor when architectural choices are made during the planning phase of systems development and maintenance. In this work, we seek to understand the importance that planners actually ascribe to this attribute in practice, and ask probing questions to the managers, developers, and analysts of systems in industry in the form of a survey. Initial results suggest that obsolescence is neither perceived as a critical factor during planning for systems development, nor is it viewed as a major contributor to the total cost of operation of client/server systems. Product Customization On The Web: An Empirical Study Of Factors Impacting Choiceboard User Satisfaction, Pratyush Bharati, Abhijit Chaudhury

Choiceboards are Web-based systems that allow consumers to customize their orders. The study investigated factors that affect consumers’ intention to use choiceboards. The research is based on Masons’ theory and DeLone and McLean’s model of information system use. It was found that intention to use is affected by overall satisfaction. In turn, these two factors are positively impacted by factors such as system quality and information quality. In spite of support from theory, the evidence for the factor, information presentation was weak.

Service organizations are continuously endeavoring to improve their quality of service as it is of paramount importance to them. Despite the importance of understanding the relationship of service quality and information systems, this research has not been pursued extensively. This study has addressed this gap in the research literature and studied how information systems impacts service quality. A research model is developed based on IS success model.
