An Organization's Responsibility To Its Employees, Susan R. Madsen Dec 2000

An Organization's Responsibility To Its Employees, Susan R. Madsen

Susan R. Madsen

Defining and deciding the responsibility of business organizations to provide and assist employees with work-family programs and initiatives is a current critical issue that has ignited controversy during the past decade. The author argues that work-family programs should be a part of every organization and should be linked to benefits to the employer. She argues that training and educating business leaders about work-family options and benefits is a better solution than continual legislation. Discussions include organizational responsibility, the increased need for these programs, work-family programs and services, benefits and suggestions for the employer, and finding a solution through shared responsibility.

Should The Federal Government Mandate Family Medical Leave Policy For Companies With 25-49 Employees?, Sonja Irlbeck, Susan R. Madsen, Sue Nash

Susan R. Madsen

Employees and employers struggle with balancing work/family responsibilities. While the U.S. Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) has been effective for some companies, it created burdens for others. The current debate whether to extend the FMLA to employees in companies with 25-49 employees has spawned U.S. studies and hearings to understand better both sides of the issue. This article reviews both sides of this critical issue, providing a history of the current act and references to international documentation and experts on the topic. The authors discuss possible amendments to the FMLA, as well as expansion of the legislation that will benefit …

Staff development is one of the pillars of organisational advancement. A welltrained employee has the capacity to increase the organisational output and improve his/her individual social capacity. The conventional method of staff development trains each tier of decision-makers for their particular skill needs. The problem with this model is that capital gain and financial results might be the only mutual outcome of these training. The proposed model sees the staff as individuals who might have similar needs and interests towards certain philosophical and cultural views holding the organisation together. The model, already in practice in one of the Pacific Island …

Linking Engineer Career Orientation And Human Resource Management Practices: Does Fit Affect Retention?, Cynthia M. Davis Mar 2000

Linking Engineer Career Orientation And Human Resource Management Practices: Does Fit Affect Retention?, Cynthia M. Davis

Theses and Dissertations

Turnover of the Air Force civil engineering (CE) officers is becoming increasingly important, as levels of CE Captains consistently decreases. Allen and Katz (1986) identified three career orientations of engineers based on their job preference-project, professional, and management engineers. Shepard (1958) suggested a dual-ladder promotion system to meet the cancer desires of technical and management workers. Additional research has proposed "desired" Human Resource Management (HRM) practices to facilitate the retention of each type of career-based engineer (Lee and Maurer, 1997). In an effort to determine if these career orientations, along with Air Force HRM practices, were linked to declining retention, …

Within this context, the idea of what constitutes true quality in higher education is discussed followed by an explanation of how Deming's famous '14 points' are as applicable to colleges and universities as they are to business and industry. The author then explains how the '14 points' can be used as a framework for …

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Given differences in values about work and family time, it is hypothesized that Americans will experience greater family demand, which will have greater impact on work-family conflict, whereas the Chinese will experience greater work demand, which will have the greater impact on work-family conflict. The results of a survey of working men and women in the 2 countries generally support the hypotheses; however, work demand did not differ significantly between the 2 countries and did not have a greater effect than family demand on work-family conflict in China.

One of the most significant biblical passages bearing on the issue of evaluation is Revelation 2-3, where the risen Christ assesses the spiritual performance of the churches of Asia. • Effective evaluation is based on accurate information

• Effective evaluation recognizes both positive and negative performance

• Effective evaluation increases awareness of accountability

• Effective evaluation provides incentives for improved performance

Pastors and church administrators would do well to observe these guidelines when assessing their subordinates’ performance.
