This is a qualitative study about students who attended First Line Supervision classes at a rural Kentucky Appalachian university. First Line Supervision classes are taught in six hour blocks and are designed to teach students leadership skills. These students took a series of leadership based topics to better prepare themselves for a leadership role in their current employment. In addition, they were seeking the necessary information needed to be successful in filling the educational gaps within their organizations. Current research reveals that staff nurses are routinely placed into front-line leadership roles with little formal preparation. The purpose of this project was the development, implementation, and evaluation of a pilot nurse leader development program for nurse leaders at a small community hospital located in Clarksville, Indiana. This study consisted of a quasi-experimental design, with the intervention consisting of a leadership course delivered to a convenience sample of nurses in managerial positions. Leadership attributes was quantified, both pre/post interventions, through the administration of the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI), a Likert-scaled survey. This master’s project presents creative principles, frameworks, materials, and online methodologies for the development of a new or updated training program within a team environment. Inspiration for the project was sourced from creativity research papers, publicly available training guides, popular business books, and my personal experience co-leading the Global Citizen Leadership program in partnership with the Center for Creative Leadership at two universities in India.
