Ethics In Publishing, Susan R. Madsen
Ethics In Publishing, Susan R. Madsen
Susan R. Madsen
The primary purpose of this innovative session is to provide HRD faculty, administrators, and graduate students the forum to listen to panelists and then discuss current issues and challenges related to the ethical decision-making and behavior of researchers and scholars as it relates to publishing. It will provide attendees the opportunity to challenge behaviors and practices commonly seen and held within this arena. I (Susan R. Madsen) just faciliated a very successful session at the Academy of Management in Anaheim (August, 2008) on this topic and realized that we need the same conversation (different panelists) in the AHRD. In fact, …
Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson
Taxonomy Of Business Ethics Theories, Grace S. Thomson
Dr. Grace S. Thomson
An increasing interest on ethics in business has resulted in a fruitful production of scholarly research that provides business leaders and decision-makers with references to bridge theory and practice (Cherry, Lee, and Chien, 2003). For an effective application of business ethics theories, it is necessary to comprehend their domains, their external and internal logic, and the specific applications to the ethical issues under analysis (Wempe, 2008).
This document presents a taxonomy of 11 ethical theories applied to business ethics that incorporate grounded theory and conceptual frameworks. As a basis for the construction of this taxonomy, the selection of the theories …

What we eat is rapidly becoming an issue of global concern. With food shortages, the rise in chronic disease, and global warming, the impact of our dietary choices seems more relevant today than ever. Globally, a transition is taking place toward greater consumption of foods of animal origin, in lieu of plantbased diets. With this transition comes intensification of animal agriculture that in turn is associated with the emergence of zoonotic infectious diseases, environmental degradation, and the epidemics of chronic disease and obesity. Health professionals should be aware of these trends and consider them as they promote healthier and more …

The Social And Moral Responsibility Of U.S. Americans To Assist In Buildling Human Capacity Throughout The World, Steve Gibson, Susan R. Madsen, Douglas Jackson, Troy Holmberg
The Social And Moral Responsibility Of U.S. Americans To Assist In Buildling Human Capacity Throughout The World, Steve Gibson, Susan R. Madsen, Douglas Jackson, Troy Holmberg
Susan R. Madsen
There are many individuals throughout the world, particularly in developing nations, who are unable to obtain the education and training necessary to support themselves and families. Needless to say, most of these people will never be able to reach their full human potential. Although more and more U.S. citizens and agencies are interested in becoming involved in initiatives focused on helping others in these countries, there is still much that should be done. This presentation argues that it is the social and moral responsibility of those who have the means and education to assist in building human capacity throughout the …

A Response To Bruni And Sugden, Julie A. Nelson
A Response To Bruni And Sugden, Julie A. Nelson
Economics Faculty Publication Series
An article by Luigino Bruni and Robert Sugden published in this journal argues that market relations contain elements of what they call ‘fraternity’. This Response demonstrates that my own views on interpersonal relations and markets – which originated in the feminist analysis of caring labour – are far closer to Bruni and Sugden's than they acknowledge in their article, and goes on to discuss additional important dimensions of sociality that they neglect.

This paper investigates whether reputation-building strategies guide U.S. governors’ state cigarette tax choices, and whether the federal cigarette tax influences such behavior. Using 1975-2000 data, we find evidence that governors in states with relatively important agricultural tobacco production and tobacco manufacturing, and which are densely populated by smokers, appear prone to reputation-building. Moreover, lame ducks are more prone to raise the state cigarette tax the lower the federal tax.

The Apollo Fallacy And Its Effect On U.S. Energy Policy, Peter Z. Grossman
The Apollo Fallacy And Its Effect On U.S. Energy Policy, Peter Z. Grossman
Scholarship and Professional Work - Business
US Policy makers have made continual references to the Apollo Program as a model for development of alternative energy technologies. This model, however, is inappropriate for energy policy, and its use is termed the Apollo fallacy. The goal of the Apollo Program was the demonstration of engineering prowess while any alternative energy technology must succeed in the marketplace. Several Apollo-like energy programs have been tried and all have failed at high cost. It is argued that the use of Apollo has political benefits but that it is detrimental to the adoption of potentially effective energy policies.

"Islamic Banking And Finance: Moral Beliefs And Business Practices At Work", Karen Ahmed
Publications – Dreihaus College of Business
The religion of Islam has existed for 1400 years but Islamic economic theory and its financial institutions emerged as an industry only in the 1970s. Islamic financial institutions (IFIs) are designed to help Muslims conduct business internationally while simultaneously upholding traditional Islamic values related to trade finance and currency movement. The basis for their existence is the Islamic moral prohibition on charging interest—interest is a central component of capitalist banking—yet IFIs conduct billions of dollars of business annually in the world economy and the de facto Islamic banking transaction is—in most cases—virtually identical to a capitalist banking transaction. Business practices …

The strategies and aims of private equity firms are explained in the context of the financial landscape that has allowed them to flourish; their aggressive expansion into media ownership is outlined in detail. Particular attention is paid to the public interest concerns raised by private equity media ownership relating to the frenzied nature of the buyout market, profit maximization strategies, and the heavy debt burdens imposed on acquired firms. The article concludes with discussion of …

Food Safety And The Role Of The Government: Implications For Csr Policies In China, R Dellios, Xiaohua Yang, N K. Yilmaz
Economics, Law, and International Business
This study investigates food scandals and the role of government in corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the food industry and explores strategies for the Chinese government to tackle the food safety problems that abound in China. Based on the theoretical discussion of four types of CSR and the empirical evidence from four case studies, we argue that government influence on CSR in the food industry is determined by the intensity and salience of its own behavior and actions including regulations. We further believe that a balanced CSR strategy covering economic, legal, ethical and philanthropic considerations would work best for China. …

Hedge Fund Fraud And The Public Good, Lydie Pierre-Louis
Economics, Law, and International Business
The current financial crisis resonates with every American, regardless of their connection to the securities markets. Many struggle to understand how and why the American financial and securities markets collapsed last year. In essence, why did the regulators fail to prevent the collapse? Government officials continue to analyze the relationship between the structural collapse of the markets and regulators’ limited jurisdiction over a class of entities whose transactions substantially impact the markets: hedge funds. Congress can no longer deny hedge funds’ detrimental impact on the financial and securities markets. The impetus for financial re-regulation has arrived. It is incumbent upon …

Supply Chain Management (SCM) has proven to be an effective tool that aids companies in the development of competitive advantages. SCM Systems are relied on to manage warehouses, transportation, trade logistics and various other issues concerning the coordinated movement of products and services from suppliers to customers. Although in today’s fast paced business environment, numerous supply chain solution tools are readily available to companies, choosing the right SCM software is not an easy task. The complexity of SCM systems creates a multifaceted issue when selecting the right software, particularly in light of the speed at which technology evolves. In this …
Corporate Social Responsibility Orientation And Organisational Performance Within The Retailing Sector, Andrew J. Zur, Jody Evans, Kerrie Bridson
Corporate Social Responsibility Orientation And Organisational Performance Within The Retailing Sector, Andrew J. Zur, Jody Evans, Kerrie Bridson
AZ
It is becoming increasingly apparent that organisations in the oversaturated retailing sector are looking for new ways to gain a positional advantage over competitors. Using the resource-based view, this paper proposes that investment in and implementation of socially responsible and sustainable practices and strategies is, in fact, a capability of the firm. Further, we suggest that an organisation is able to better achieve a positional advantage and subsequent strong organisational performance through adoption of a corporate social responsibility (CSR) orientation. We also posit that organisational culture, corporate strategy and target stakeholders influence the development of a strong CSR orientation.

Spirituality And Subjective Well-Being: Empirical Evidences For A New Domain In The Personal Well-Being Index, Eduardo Wills-Herrera
Eduardo Wills-Herrera
Subjective well-being explores the evaluations, both positive and negative, of how people experience their lives. Research in the field inquires how people perceive their well-being in different settings, including different cultures, regions and cities. A large number of different measures have been designed to capture subjective well-being. One of the most used SWB measure is the Personal Well-being Index (PWI), an evaluation of life developed by Cummins et al [(2003). Social Indicators Research, 64, 159–190] which proposes that satisfaction with life consists of seven different life-domains. Theoretical considerations of the contribution of spirituality and religiosity to life satisfaction, from a …

Integrating Ethics Across Disciplines: The Mcdonald’S Case And Poverty Alleviation, Laura Hartman, Regina Wolfe, Patricia Werhane

The question of whether ethical issues should be integrated throughout an undergraduate or graduate business curriculum is no longer relevant. To the contrary, it is instead the urgency of how those challenges are most effectively addressed and where to find models of positive corporate performance that occupies our current attention. While no single organization exemplifies the entirety of “ethical” behavior, it is vital to consider models of conduct that have generated value through ethical means, both domestically and on a global scale. The purpose of this discussion is to introduce McDonald’s practice of promotion from within an example of a …
