Fraud Detections For Online Businesses: A Perspective From Blockchain Technology, Yuanfeng Cai, Dan Zhu Dec 2016

Fraud Detections For Online Businesses: A Perspective From Blockchain Technology, Yuanfeng Cai, Dan Zhu

Publications and Research

Background: The reputation system has been designed as an effective mechanism to reduce risks associated with online shopping for customers. However, it is vulnerable to rating fraud. Some raters may inject unfairly high or low ratings to the system so as to promote their own products or demote their competitors.

Method: This study explores the rating fraud by differentiating the subjective fraud from objective fraud. Then it discusses the effectiveness of blockchain technology in objective fraud and its limitation in subjective fraud, especially the rating fraud. Lastly, it systematically analyzes the robustness of blockchain-based reputation systems in each type of …

Can You Get A Ticket? Adaptive Railway Booking Strategies By Customer Value, Jiana-Fu Wang, Ren-Huei Huang Dec 2016

Can You Get A Ticket? Adaptive Railway Booking Strategies By Customer Value, Jiana-Fu Wang, Ren-Huei Huang

Journal of Public Transportation

This paper integrates a customer segmentation method with a discrete event simulation model to bridge the gap between identifying customer behaviors and using this knowledge to respond to customers and make the best use of resources. Three strategies are proposed and examined to improve the operation efficiency of a ticket-booking system. Their objective is to assist high-value customers in obtaining the tickets they want and/or reduce cancellations and failure-to-pays from low-value customers. Our simulation results demonstrate that the high-value, customer-friendly strategy beats all in assisting high-value customers and simultaneously improves railway operation performance. Additionally, the indirect, low-value customer abandonment strategy …

Patron Activity Monitoring And Privacy Protection, Sam Kome Nov 2016

Patron Activity Monitoring And Privacy Protection, Sam Kome

Library Staff Publications and Research

Library building usage data are weak. Electronic resource usage data are weak. We conduct occasional headcounts and receive sketchy COUNTER reports. These data lack needed specificity and can’t be correlated to each other, e.g.; what resources do the early birds who sit in the north commons use? What if we knew to the minute and foot how many patrons occupied the building and where they sat? What if we also knew the electronic resources those same patrons used whether or not they were in the building? And what if we could perfectly protect their privacy? We can. This presentation will …

Space Analysis And Research Centers (Sparcs) For Ssa Data And Analytics, Phillip Cunio, Brien Flewelling Nov 2016

Space Analysis And Research Centers (Sparcs) For Ssa Data And Analytics, Phillip Cunio, Brien Flewelling

Space Traffic Management Conference

Widespread use of massive data and increasing reliance on spaceborne infrastructure are two of the emerging megatrends of the early 21st century. However, both come with liabilities: movement and processing of large data volumes is very expensive, and reliance on spaceborne infrastructure adds risk that problems in the still incompletely-understood space domain might cause work disruptions.

ExoAnalytic proposes the use of Space Analysis and Research Centers (SpARCs) as a way to begin addressing both these issues. A SpARC is a facility which integrates volumes of data collected on satellites, centrally analyzes it, and makes available resulting useful information. The …

The Problems Of Deficient Data When Planning For Religious Tourism: An Irish Case Study, Vreny Enongene, Kevin Griffin

Conference papers

This study stresses the importance of the availability of data and relevant statistics in the advancement of tourism knowledge and the enhancement of visitor experiences (pre-and post-experiences) for those particularly interested in visiting sacred sites, as well as its study. With sacred sites in the Island of Ireland as sites under study. The dearth in data and relevant statistics on religious tourism sites and their facilities, visitor numbers and their activities, management issues, and visitor experiences, at sacred sites in the Ireland of Ireland, although widely acclaimed as a country of saints and scholars, prompted the present investigation.

Implications Of Social Media Use On Instruction And Student Learning: An Exploratory Study, Mayur S. Desai, Lucy Ojode Oct 2016

Implications Of Social Media Use On Instruction And Student Learning: An Exploratory Study, Mayur S. Desai, Lucy Ojode

Southwestern Business Administration Teaching Conference

In this paper we explore the use of social media on the content delivery aspects of instruction and potential impacts on student learning. It is our conjecture that impacts of social media use might depend on factors such as the interface of particular medium and learning style, teaching style and instructor skill, and the demographics of students and their instructors. We propose a framework that links instructor to students through social media. That is, social media becomes a channel though which learning occurs. Classifying multimedia technology as tools and social media as interactive Web 2.0 Internet-based applications, we employ …

The Impact Of Analytics Utilization On Team Performance: Comparisons Within And Across The U.S. Professional Sports Leagues, Lee A. Freeman Oct 2016

The Impact Of Analytics Utilization On Team Performance: Comparisons Within And Across The U.S. Professional Sports Leagues, Lee A. Freeman

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Business analytics, defined as the use of data to make better, more relevant, evidence-based business decisions, has received a great deal of attention in practitioner circles. Organizations have adopted business analytics in an effort to improve revenue, product placement, and customer satisfaction. Professional sports teams are no different. While analytics has been used for over 30 years, the use of analytics by professional sports teams is a relatively new concept. However, it is unclear whether the teams that have adopted analytics are seeing any results. If not, then perhaps analytics is not the right solution. Analyses across the four, major …

Social media mining refers to “the use of basic concepts and principal algorithms suitable for investigating massive social media data; it discusses theories and methodologies from different disciplines and encompasses the tools to formally represent, measure, model, and mine meaningful patterns from large-scale social media data” (Zafarani et al. 2014, p. 16). Social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram provide opportunities to explore consumer preferences, opinions and behaviors through …

Thin But Not Anorexic: Copyright Protection For Compilations And Other Fact Works, David E. Shipley

Journal of Intellectual Property Law

Questions about the copyrightability of compilations and other low authorship fact works, and about the scope of protection, have continued to trouble courts long after the Supreme Court's landmark decision in Feist Publications, Inc. v. Rural Telephone Services Co. in 1991. Justice O'Connor's opinion, explaining why a standard white pages telephone directory did not meet the constitutional and statutory requirements for copyright protection, defined an original work of authorship as one that is independently created by its author and that evidences at least a minimal level of creativity. The latter requirement has been elusive, in part because Justice O'Connor defined …

Relevance Is In The Eye Of The Beholder: Design Principles For The Extraction Of Context-Aware Information, Arturo Castellanos

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Since the1970s many approaches of representing domains have been suggested. Each approach maintains the assumption that the information about the objects represented in the Information System (IS) is specified and verified by domain experts and potential users. Yet, as more IS are developed to support a larger diversity of users such as customers, suppliers, and members of the general public (such as many multi-user online systems), analysts can no longer rely on a stable single group of people for complete specification of domains –to the extent that prior research has questioned the efficacy of conceptual modeling in these heterogeneous settings. …
