No newspaper comic character enjoys a larger international audience than Garfield. While newspaper comics have been infiltrating the homes of readers in the United States since the 1880s, Garfield has made more of an impact than any other. Brought into existence by Jim Davis in Muncie, Indiana in 1978, Garfield has now gone world-wide. Breaking Guinness world records for most syndicated newspaper comic strip, Garfield has made over 800 million dollars in comic sales alone, making it the largest grossing newspaper comic strip to date. To listen to music just a few hundred years ago would require hundreds of miles of travel, tons of wood and metal and ivory and copper strings, construction of a stage and audience platforms, human capital to perform the music of course, and lots of money. All of these variables would combine to produce an auditory experience of approximately 45 minutes total. The southwest region of Virginia has an unstable economy, which cycles through periods of growth and decline. The strategic plans for southwest Virginia propose cultural heritage tourism as a sustainable industry for economic development of this rural region. Dorchester’s Upham’s Corner neighborhood is home to a diverse mix of neighborhood residents, many historical landmarks, and a commercial district. At one point, Upham’s Corner was one of the top five market hubs for New England. It was because of this market history that the Strand Theater was built as a community home, as a community connection, and as a network. UMass Boston’s College of Management undergraduate students have developed ideas for promoting the arts and bringing businesses to the Upham’s Corner neighborhood. The European sovereign debt crisis has led to considerable cuts in public funding for the arts. Portugal, one of the countries most affected by the crisis has recently seen consistent public cuts for its cultural organizations. With the prospect of continued budget cuts, this paper seeks to examine how Portugal's largest public institute for the management of museums and built heritage the IMC (Instituto de Museus e Conservação) can seek to generate more private revenue and lower its costs in order to garner greater financial stability for itself. In this Essay we introduce a model of copyright law that calibrates authors’ rights and liabilities to the level of originality in their works. We advocate this model as a substitute for the extant regime that unjustly and inefficiently grants equal protection to all works satisfying the “modicum of creativity” standard. Under our model, highly original works will receive enhanced protection and their authors will also be sheltered from suits by owners of preexisting works. Conversely, authors of less original works will receive diminished protection and incur greater exposure to copyright liability. We operationalize this proposal by designing separate rules …

Production And Political Economy In The Animation Industry: Why Insourcing And Outsourcing Occur, Feichin, Ted Tschang, Andrea Goldstein

This paper presents a framework for explaining production patterns in creative industries. In particular, we focus on the conditions under which insourcing occurs in the US threedimensional animation industry and where outsourcing in the conventional two-dimensional animation industry occurs to the Philippines. The work that is outsourced is not the most creative component of the entire production process. Institutional decisions (as related to the location of decision makers and primary markets), and business conditions in the world market, have both positively and negatively affected the local Filipino industry and its position within the global division of labor.
