The Effect Of Nondiagnostic Information On Internal Auditor Skepticism: Capturing The Dilution Effect, Joseph Anthony Giordano Mar 2023

The Effect Of Nondiagnostic Information On Internal Auditor Skepticism: Capturing The Dilution Effect, Joseph Anthony Giordano

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Internal auditors assigned to assess internal controls over financial reporting incorporate irrelevant information into their judgment, showing decreased skepticism when irrelevant information contradicts preconceived stereotypes of management, known as the dilution effect and attributed to the representativeness heuristic. Irrelevant information consistent with preconceived stereotypes does not decrease skepticism. In this experiment practicing internal auditors are provided an irrelevant description of the Chief Information Officer portrayed as either gregarious or introverted then subsequently receive relevant internal controls information. When the Chief Information Officer is described as gregarious, counter to common stereotypes, internal auditors assess risk as less likely to occur compared …

Ceo, Cfo, And Audit Partner Gender, And Accounting Conservatism, Ceara Hintz Jan 2023

Ceo, Cfo, And Audit Partner Gender, And Accounting Conservatism, Ceara Hintz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I examine the association between CEO, CFO, and audit partner gender and accounting conservatism using a unique sample that encompasses hand-collected data. While accounting conservatism reflects less risky accounting choices, risk aversion theory indicates that females are more risk averse than males. I apply risk aversion theory to accounting conservatism and investigate two research questions: (i) Does the CEO or CFO and audit partner gender influence accounting conservatism? (ii) Does a female audit partner influence the relationship between a male CEO or CFO and accounting conservatism? Using skewness as a proxy of accounting conservatism, I test three hypotheses. The results …

The Ethicality And Political Skill Of Leaders And Subordinate Job Satisfaction: A Study Of Accounting Faculty, Donald L. Ariail Jan 2022

The Ethicality And Political Skill Of Leaders And Subordinate Job Satisfaction: A Study Of Accounting Faculty, Donald L. Ariail

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using a sample of 539 accounting faculty teaching in the United States, this study explored perceptions of the ethicality and political skill of their direct supervisors and self-reported levels of job satisfaction. Ethicality was measured with the Ethical Leadership Scale (ELS) and the Behavioral Integrity (BI) Scale. These measures, which were highly correlated, were proxy measures for accounting faculty perceptions of the tone-at-the-top (TATT)—the ethical leadership under which faculty teach and research. The results indicated that while the majority of accounting faculty perceived their direct supervisor as being ethical, about a third (28% BI, 34.8% ELS) of them did not …

Do Bears Prefer The Weak And The Downtrodden? The Effects Of The 52-Week Low And Financial Strength On Short-Seller Behavior, Christopher Alan Miller Jan 2021

Do Bears Prefer The Weak And The Downtrodden? The Effects Of The 52-Week Low And Financial Strength On Short-Seller Behavior, Christopher Alan Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigates the effects of a company’s financial strength on short-seller behavior around a non-information-producing event. The distance of a stock price to its 52-week high or low does not provide fundamental information, but the price extremes serve as salient price points upon which investors anchor their expectations of future stock performance. Using a large sample of daily short sales data, I investigated the effects of both the proximity to the 52-week low and the financial strength of the underlying company on short-seller behavior. I found that short-selling volume increases as the price nears its 52-week low and that …

Inversed Learning In An Intermediate Accounting Course, Ashley B. Bentley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Students enrolled in accounting courses often struggle because of the complexity of the topic. Accounting instructors have searched for effective means of fostering student success, but the learning process continues to change. Critical thinking and problem solving abilities are vital for students and future professionals. Thus, teaching should not be limited to the transmission of information. By moving the dissemination of basic knowledge outside the classroom inversed learning allows class time for deep dives into complex topics and hands-on activities. Students who are actively involved in learning tend to be more successful in the classroom.

The purpose of this study …

Three Studies On Cybersecurity Disclosure And Assurance, Patricia Navarro Velez Jan 2019

Three Studies On Cybersecurity Disclosure And Assurance, Patricia Navarro Velez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation comprises three experimental studies that explore how management's financial disclosure behavior and security strategies influence the costs associated with cybersecurity breaches. The first study examines the cost of litigation in connection with cybersecurity incidents. The purpose of this study is to determine how the characteristics and content of cybersecurity incidents' disclosure affects jurors' liability assessments. Specifically, this study explores how jurors react to management timeliness in disclosing the incident and the plausibility of the explanations provided to justify the disclosure strategy. The second and third studies explore the value relevance of cybersecurity risk management (CRM) assurance. In particular, …

System Justification Theory: Synthesizing And Applying Its Theoretical Motivations In Behavioral Accounting Research, Wioleta Olczak Jan 2019

System Justification Theory: Synthesizing And Applying Its Theoretical Motivations In Behavioral Accounting Research, Wioleta Olczak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two studies on System Justification Theory, hereafter SJT. SJT (Jost and Banaji 1994) is a psychology theory stating that individuals justify the status quo even if doing so is against their own or their group's interest (Jost et al. 2004). Comprised of twenty propositions, SJT attempts to explain social and psychological factors driving individuals to perceive the social system as legitimate. These factors also drive individuals to support and maintain the social system. The synthesis and application of this psychological theory in behavioral accounting research is limited, but could provide explanatory evidence on individual decision-making in …

Two Studies Analyzing The Effects Of Business Case And Paradoxical Cognitive Framing On Sustainability Decision Making, Nadra Pencle Jan 2019

Two Studies Analyzing The Effects Of Business Case And Paradoxical Cognitive Framing On Sustainability Decision Making, Nadra Pencle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

These two companion studies theoretically and empirically examine managers' use of different cognitive frames in decision-making related to corporate sustainability. Study I is a theoretical undertaking aimed at highlighting potential zones of investigation arising from the introduction of paradox theory into managerial accounting. First, I examine extant literature on paradoxes to garner an understanding of its evolution and application in the management and psychology domains. Second, I use current constructs and typologies to identify multiple sustainability and managerial accounting tensions as paradoxical. Third, I make recommendations on how to apply paradox theory more effectively to the corporate sustainability tensions I …

Recycled Ceos And Managerial Ability: Do Venture Backed Companies Have A Comparative Advantage?, Sydnee C. Manley Jan 2019

Recycled Ceos And Managerial Ability: Do Venture Backed Companies Have A Comparative Advantage?, Sydnee C. Manley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the relationship between experienced chief executive officers (CEOs), venture capital support, and company performance. Much of the success of venture backed companies is attributed to the reputation, monitoring, and networking of venture capitalists (Hochberg, Ljungqvist, and Lu 2007; Katz 2009). One crucial task of venture capitalists, or any stakeholder, is to find talented executives to lead their companies. However, finding quality CEOs for young growth companies with a relatively short financial history can be a difficult endeavor. Venture capitalists may have a comparative advantage in this area because they network within the venture capital industry to “ …

The Effect Of Auditors’ Informal Communication In The Audit Environment On Financial Reporting Outcomes, Emily K. Hornok Jan 2019

The Effect Of Auditors’ Informal Communication In The Audit Environment On Financial Reporting Outcomes, Emily K. Hornok

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

I examine the effect of auditors’ recurring, informal communication with managers and other auditors on financial reporting outcomes in a laboratory experiment in which participants in the roles of auditors and managers interact in a stylized audit setting. My 2×2 between-subjects design manipulates whether the auditors are able to informally communicate with either, neither, or both the manager and other auditors. I find that when the auditor and manager informally communicate, they each develop a social bond, which increases the manager’s feeling of accountability towards the auditor, causes the manager to make more honest representations to the auditor, and leads …

Three Studies Examining The Effects Of Business Analytics On Judgment And Decision Making In Accounting, Bradley Lang Aug 2018

Three Studies Examining The Effects Of Business Analytics On Judgment And Decision Making In Accounting, Bradley Lang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three studies investigating the relationship between business analytics and decision making in accounting. In an effort to improve performance, organizations increasingly emphasize fact-based decision making supported by business analytics, which translate complex data into manageable information through statistical analysis. While the recent focus on business analytics is transforming how managers make decisions, analytics alone do not generate increased performance; the synergy between business analytics and user judgments is a vital component of realizing value. To this end, Study I experimentally investigates how various characteristics of business analytics affect individuals' reliance and perceptions of the analytic. Through …

Three Studies Examining The Potential For Relational Reasoning To Enhance Expertise In Complex Audit Domains, Matthew Holt Jan 2018

Three Studies Examining The Potential For Relational Reasoning To Enhance Expertise In Complex Audit Domains, Matthew Holt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three studies that explore the potential for relational reasoning to advance research on the facilitation of expertise in complex audit domains. Study One seeks to explicate the potential that theory and methods from relational reasoning and associated research have to advance the audit expertise research stream. The implications for future research on facilitating auditing expertise are discussed in synchrony with future research questions, including whether or not such strategies will be effective in domains with more than minor relational complexity. Studies Two and Three experimentally examine the use of metacognitive skills intended to enhance relational knowledge, …

Three Studies Examining Auditors' Use Of Data Analytics, Jared Koreff Jan 2018

Three Studies Examining Auditors' Use Of Data Analytics, Jared Koreff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation comprises three studies, one qualitative and two experimental, that center on auditor's use of data analytics. Data analytics hold the potential for auditors to reallocate time spent on labor intensive tasks to judgment intensive tasks (Brown-Liburd et al. 2015), ultimately improving audit quality (Raphael 2017). Yet the availability of these tools does not guarantee that auditors will incorporate the data analytics into their judgments (Davis et al. 1989; Venkatesh et al. 2003). The first study investigates implications of using data analytics to structure the audit process for nonprofessionalized auditors. As the public accounting profession continues down a path …

How Do Specialist Expertise, Auditor-Specialist Communication, And Time Pressure Affect Auditors’ Use Of Specialists’ Valuations?, Sara Gochnauer Jan 2018

How Do Specialist Expertise, Auditor-Specialist Communication, And Time Pressure Affect Auditors’ Use Of Specialists’ Valuations?, Sara Gochnauer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study experimentally investigates auditors’ reliance on specialists’ work regarding complex estimates. Specifically, this paper examines how the relevance of specialists’ expertise (or the degree to which their prior experience matches the current task), the opportunity for auditor-specialist pairs to communicate, and the level of time pressure affect the extent to which auditors rely on specialists’ estimates. To investigate the research question, I employ a mixed experimental design in an abstract setting, where college students take on the roles of auditor and specialist and work in auditor-specialist pairs to complete an estimation task. I manipulate the relevance of specialists' expertise …

Three Studies Examining Accountability In Auditing, Amy Donnelly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This is dissertation consists of three studies investigating accountability in auditing. It is aimed at gaining a better understanding of how auditors make decision in the presence of accountability pressure. The first study is a literature review of the experimental audit research on accountability. It provides a conceptual framework for organizing prior research on this topic and offers opportunities for future research. The second study experimentally investigates accountability as a potential mitigating mechanism for the performance declines caused by ego depletion. Auditors are shown to be susceptible to depletion, but research has yet to consider how a natural element of …

Three Studies Examining The Effects Of Informal Management Control Systems And Incentive Compensation Schemes On Employees' Performance, Kazeem Akinyele Jan 2017

Three Studies Examining The Effects Of Informal Management Control Systems And Incentive Compensation Schemes On Employees' Performance, Kazeem Akinyele

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of three studies investigating the effects of informal management control systems (MCS) and different types of incentive compensation schemes on employees' performance. Prior research describes informal MCS as implicit sets of structures that management adopts to encourage employees to act in a way that aligns with overall organizational goals (Berry et al. 2009). Management usually puts informal MCS in place to inspire self-regulation behaviors among employees; hence, management may not reward or penalize employee behavior that is consistent or inconsistent with this informal MCS (Berry et al. 2009; Christ et al. 2008). Informal controls are implied …

The Expansion Of Financial Regulation To Include Humanitarian Issues:An Examination Of The Development Of Conflict Mineral Reporting Requirements Using Actor-Network Theory, Robert Tennant Jan 2017

The Expansion Of Financial Regulation To Include Humanitarian Issues:An Examination Of The Development Of Conflict Mineral Reporting Requirements Using Actor-Network Theory, Robert Tennant

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study conceptually and empirically examines the establishment of certain financial regulation that resulted from the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) of 2007-2009. The crisis led to the establishment of the most extensive change in the regulation of the financial sector since the Great Depression (Green, 2011). During the forty years leading up to the crisis, the United States had engaged in a process of increased deregulation to promote greater efficiency (Yaron & Hendershott, 1998). The belief that reduced regulation would improve efficiency and foster innovation became the mantra of many economic advisers to policy setters, to the point that as …

Under-Researched Areas Of Audit Quality: Inputs, Firms, And Institutions, Jared Eutsler Jan 2016

Under-Researched Areas Of Audit Quality: Inputs, Firms, And Institutions, Jared Eutsler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Francis (2011) lists three under-researched units of analysis that affect audit quality: inputs, firms, and institutions. This dissertation analyzes how each of these units of analysis contributes to audit quality. Study 1 examines audit inputs, specifically, characteristics of the individual auditor that affect professional skepticism. Study 2 examines how firm staffing decisions affect audit quality. Study 3 examines how the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board ("PCAOB"), as a regulatory institution, promotes audit quality through their risk-based inspection program. The first study reports the results of two experiments that examine professional skepticism as a function of moral agency. Consistent with the …

Decision Making In Corporate Taxation, Bonnie Brown Jan 2016

Decision Making In Corporate Taxation, Bonnie Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is comprised of three experimental studies that examine corporate tax aggressiveness through an investigation of judgment and decision making in the corporate tax environment. Studies 1 and 2 examine individual judgment involved in decision making (i.e., assessments of tax positions based upon tax scenario facts and tax authority). Study 1 examines how advice from external tax advisors and a tax advisor's association with the company's audit firm influences the aggressiveness of experienced in-house corporate tax decision makers. Study 2 examines how situational factors in the corporate tax environment interact with individual traits to affect individual-level tax aggressiveness, focusing …

Re-Thinking The Intentionality Of Fraud: Constructing And Testing The Theory Of Unintended Amoral Behavior To Explain Fraudulent Financial Reporting, Andrew Dill Jan 2016

Re-Thinking The Intentionality Of Fraud: Constructing And Testing The Theory Of Unintended Amoral Behavior To Explain Fraudulent Financial Reporting, Andrew Dill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My three-paper dissertation is aimed at applying the concepts of bounded ethicality and ethical fading to accounting fraud. Typical of relatively new fields such as behavioral ethics, theoretical models are scarce (Tenbrunsel & Smith-Crowe, 2008). As such, the purpose of Study 1 is to unify disparate theories and ideas from psychology and behavioral ethics as a means of constructing a theory, the Theory of Unintended Amoral Behavior (TUAB), which includes the concepts of bounded ethicality and ethical fading. In addition, the pressure for management to meet earnings expectations is discussed through the lens of the TUAB as an example of …

The Impact Of Disclosing Auditor Independence And Tenure On Non-Professional Investor Judgment And Decision-Making, L. Tyler Williams Jan 2016

The Impact Of Disclosing Auditor Independence And Tenure On Non-Professional Investor Judgment And Decision-Making, L. Tyler Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study experimentally investigates how disclosing both the auditor’s obligation to remain independent of its client and auditor tenure in the audit report influence non-professional investors’ judgments and decision-making, especially the decision about whether to invest in a particular auditee. In the Auditor’s Reporting Model (ARM) proposal, the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) asserts that inclusion of additional information in the audit report will improve the informativeness of the audit report for investors and as a result will modify its relevance to investment decisions. Using an experiment, I find that these disclosures positively influence non-professional investor judgments of auditor …

The Effect Of Competitive Advantages On Corporate Tax Avoidance: A Determinant Or Excuse?, Andrew Dale Almand Jan 2016

The Effect Of Competitive Advantages On Corporate Tax Avoidance: A Determinant Or Excuse?, Andrew Dale Almand

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recently, managers of U.S. corporations have explained the motivation behind engaging in extreme and public forms of tax avoidance (i.e. corporate inversions) as addressing the inability to gain or maintain global competitive advantages (Security 2014, 1). While prior research explores how a corporation’s overall business strategy can affect tax avoidance behavior (Higgins et al. 2015) and measures the effects of different components of competitive advantages on tax avoidance (Kubick et al. 2015; Gao et al. 2015), how total global competitive advantages impact tax avoidance remains an unanswered empirical question. Therefore, this study considers the following research questions: 1)How does the …

Three Studies Examining Nonprofessional Investors' Decision Making, Anis Triki

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation consists of three studies exploring nonprofessional investors' decision making. Technological advancements witnessed by the capital markets in recent years have caused significant changes to the dissemination and use of information, particularly by nonprofessional investors. Among these developments is the growth of social media that allows anyone to post information upon which others may rely and the availability of DAs that assist decision makers in evaluating the quality of information reported by an organization. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the benefits of using DAs that are capable assessing the quality of information reported to capital market …

Three Studies Examining The Effects Of Psychological Distance On Judgment And Decision Making In Accounting, Martin Weisner Jan 2015

Three Studies Examining The Effects Of Psychological Distance On Judgment And Decision Making In Accounting, Martin Weisner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation comprises three studies, a literature review and two experimental studies, that center on the effects of psychological distance on judgment and decision-making in accounting. Construal level theory (CLT) of psychological distance (Liberman and Trope 1998; Trope and Liberman 2003), a framework recently developed in the field of social psychology, constitutes the theoretical foundation for each study. The first study reviews extant literature on CLT and illustrates the theory's potential for investigating previously unexplained phenomena within the accounting domain. Selected publications that apply CLT in contexts that are of particular interest to accounting researchers are emphasized and a series …

Tax Compliance: Ethical Orientation, Risk Perception And The Role Of The Tax Preparer, Ashley Beckett Soliz Jan 2015

Tax Compliance: Ethical Orientation, Risk Perception And The Role Of The Tax Preparer, Ashley Beckett Soliz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In a voluntary tax system, taxpayers have an opportunity to avoid or evade paying taxes. The reasons for and the causes of noncompliance are expansive. One way to increase revenue to the government without increasing taxes is to focus on deterring tax evasion and tax underreporting. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects on tax compliance of the taxpayer’s ethical orientation and perceived financial risk, as well as the role of the tax preparer in the compliance decision. This research adds to the current tax compliance literature by investigating (in an experimental setting) the role of the …

How Does The Audit Report's Structure Affect Nonprofessional Investors' Attention To Its Content?, Brian Matthew Goodson Jan 2015

How Does The Audit Report's Structure Affect Nonprofessional Investors' Attention To Its Content?, Brian Matthew Goodson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study experimentally examines whether and how two potential changes to the audit report’s structure affect the extent to which nonprofessional investors attend to the report’s content when evaluating a potential investment, and whether the potential effects differ across levels of investor sophistication. Specifically, I examine the impact of descriptive paragraph headings and the relative location of the opinion paragraph on judgments of financial statement reliability and investment decisions. Results indicate that when the audit report includes descriptive paragraph headings, less sophisticated investors perceive the report to be more readable, which, in turn, leads them to attribute higher levels of …

The Prediction Of Future Earnings Using Financial Statement Information: Are Xbrl Company Filings Up To The Task?, Kelly Lawrence Williams Jan 2015

The Prediction Of Future Earnings Using Financial Statement Information: Are Xbrl Company Filings Up To The Task?, Kelly Lawrence Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Financial statement data for large companies became available to the public in XBRL format starting in 2009 in the United States. Proponents of XBRL, along with the SEC, argue that XBRL filings offer several advantages over data provided by data aggregators, such as lower cost, faster availability, and broader coverage. The purpose of this study was to contribute to the combody of knowledge by investigating whether current XBRL company filings are useful in the prediction of future earnings and to attempt to interactively obtain the balances of 70 accounting concepts needed to create an earnings prediction model from a sample …

Interactive Data Visualization In Accounting Contexts: Impact On User Attitudes, Information Processing, And Decision Outcomes, Oluwakemi Ajayi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In 2009, The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) issued a mandate requiring public companies to provide financial information to the SEC and on their corporate Web sites in an interactive data format using the eXtensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL). This dissertation consists of three separate, but interrelated studies exploring issues related to interactive data visualization in financial reporting contexts. The first study employs theories in information systems (task-technology fit and the technology-performance chain model) and cognitive psychology (cognitive load) to examine the link between characteristics of interactive data visualization and task requirements in a financial analysis context, and …

Financial Reporting Manipulation And The Role Of Religious Ownership: Evidence From Nonprofit Hospitals, Ryan Seay Jan 2014

Financial Reporting Manipulation And The Role Of Religious Ownership: Evidence From Nonprofit Hospitals, Ryan Seay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Empirical evidence (e.g. Eldenburg and Vines 2004; Leone and Van Horn 2005; Ballantine et al. 2007; Eldenburg et al. 2011) demonstrates that nonprofit hospital managers respond to competing institutional and regulatory pressures by engaging in various forms of financial reporting manipulation. While some recent research in accounting (e.g. Dyreng et al. 2012; McGuire et al. 2012) shows that religious social norms can deter this undesirable behavior, these studies focus on the private, for-profit sector and use a location-based measure of religiosity. This study extends this line of research by using a more direct measure of religious social norms, the ownership …
