Virtual R&D Team: Technology Transfer Facilitator, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Mohammad Ali Shafia, Hamid Tahbaz Tavakoli
Nader Ale Ebrahim
A conceptual model is proposed which facilitate the process of technology transfer by applying a virtual R&D team. The underlying hypothesis is responded to competitive challenges, the complex customer requirements and the high instability on the market. The context of the knowledge-based economy introduces a major shift from serial to simultaneous R&D activities in the way technology transfer is conceived. The traditional model of R&D team work is relies on the visual and face-to-face teams. The complexities involved in organizing face-to-face interactions among team members from one side, and the rapid developments of electronic communication technologies from the other ,caused …

Research Assistants In The Clever Country, Michael K. Organ, S. Svensen
Research Assistants In The Clever Country, Michael K. Organ, S. Svensen
Michael Organ
In this paper, we outline some of the problems facing research workers in Australian universities, with an emphasis on research assistants, the lowest classification of paid research worker. It is concluded that, while conditions have improved slightly since 1978, research assistants are still among the most marginalised public sector employees, and subjected to employment conditions which should be considered unacceptable in a society which values the benefits accruing from research activities.

This paper examines the employment conditions of research assistants in universities in the context of the stated intention of the Australian government to transfonn Australia into the 'clever country'. Research assistants have played an important role in Australia's research efforts. The growing teaching and administrative workloads of academic staff. and the increasing sophistication and complexity of research methodologies. have increased the demands on research assistants and the importance of their contribution. Despite this. there has been little improvement in the employment conditions of research assistants. These conditions include the absence of any job security; lack of career structure and development: …

An Information System Design Theory For And Rfid University-Based Laboratory, S. F. Wamba, Katina Michael
An Information System Design Theory For And Rfid University-Based Laboratory, S. F. Wamba, Katina Michael
Professor Katina Michael
RFID technology is defined as a wireless automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) technology and is considered as “the next big thing” in the management and “the next revolution in supply chain”. Recently, the topic has attracted the interest of the industrial community as well as the scientific community. Following this tendency, this paper applies an Information Systems Design Theory (ISDT) for an RFID-based University Laboratory. For practitioners, the paper provides some insights into the set-up and use of RFID laboratory in university settings, and at the same time, it offers a set of hypotheses that can be empirically tested.
Using Information Processing To Build A Private Label Brand In Big Emerging Markets, Rachel K. Smith, R. Edward Bashaw
Using Information Processing To Build A Private Label Brand In Big Emerging Markets, Rachel K. Smith, R. Edward Bashaw
Faculty Publications -School of Business
One of the most visible retailing phenomena of the past two decades has been the increase in sales of private labels (PL), or retail brands. Driven by retail consolidation, attractive margins, consumer sophistication, supply chain efficiencies, merchandising strategies, and pricing, PL offer a wider assortment of price and merchandise options for both retailer and consumer. An important part of the overall merchandising mix in the U.S. and Europe for decades, PL have only recently begun to make inroads in other parts of the world. Using the information processing theory, this paper outlines how retailers in three big emerging markets should …
Interest Rate Convergence In The Euro-Candidate Countries: Volatility Dynamics Of Sovereign Bond Yields, Hubert Gabrisch, Lucjan Orlowski
Interest Rate Convergence In The Euro-Candidate Countries: Volatility Dynamics Of Sovereign Bond Yields, Hubert Gabrisch, Lucjan Orlowski
WCBT Working Papers
We advocate a dynamic approach to monetary convergence to a common currency that is based on the analysis of financial system stability. Accordingly, we test empirically volatility dynamics of the ten-year sovereign bond yields of the 2004 EU accession countries in relation to the eurozone yields during the January 2, 2001- January 22, 2009 sample period. Our results show a varied degree of bond yield co-movements, the most pronounced for the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Poland, and weaker for Hungary and Slovakia. However, since the EU accession, we find some divergence of relative bond yields. We argue that a ‘static’ …
Moving Far From Far-From-Equilibrium: Opportunity Tension As The Driver Of Emergence, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein
Moving Far From Far-From-Equilibrium: Opportunity Tension As The Driver Of Emergence, Benyamin B. Lichtenstein
College of Management Working Papers and Reports
Complexity scholars have identified two distinct drivers of emergence: (1) Far-from-equilibrium dynamics that trigger order creation, and (2) adaptive tension (McKelvey, 2004) which can push a system toward instability, leading to the emergence of new order. In this paper I suggest that both are true but incomplete. For example, when drawn out to the extreme, a far-fromequilibrium framework generates a contradiction by suggesting that the most dynamic organizations are the ones farthest-from-thermodynamic equilibrium – like Exxon or GE for example. Adaptive tension portrays the effect of a dynamic push without identifying the cause. I suggest “Opportunity Tension” as an alternative, …
The Paradoxical Relationship Between Marketing And Vulnerability, Clifford J. Shultz, Morris B. Holbrook
The Paradoxical Relationship Between Marketing And Vulnerability, Clifford J. Shultz, Morris B. Holbrook
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Marketing both reduces and contributes to consumer vulnerability. In this essay, the authors explore this paradoxical relationship. Complexities and nuances captured in existing definitions are revisited. The authors then share a more expansive perspective; they offer a new typology with hopes of drawing attention to multifaceted and conflicting challenges so as to stimulate fresh thinking. Several points are raised so that policy makers and marketers might be inspired to invoke systemic solutions that increase the security and well-being of consumers who are subject to various vulnerabilities.

Liquidity And Hedge Funds, Melvyn Teo
Liquidity And Hedge Funds, Melvyn Teo
Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre
Market liquidity profoundly impacts hedge funds. Funds trading illiquid securities earns significant risk premium, report smoother returns, can better leverage on information asymmetries, and grapple with stronger capacity constraints. Importantly, the funding liquidity of hedge funds, or their ease of obtaining financing, can have a significant effect on the market liquidity of the securities they trade in, creating a downward liquidity spiral during economic downturns. We review the academic literature and deliver insights that resonate with recent market events.

Stretching The Law Ii: The Misclassification Of Employees As Independent Contractors, Bureau Of Labor Education. University Of Maine
Bureau of Labor Education
The misclassification of many employees as “independent contractors” (ICs) is problematic in a number of industries and employment situations. An earlier paper by the Bureau of Labor Education (BLE) found widespread violations of IC classification in the state’s construction industry. This paper provides a broader context for this issue with a discussion of the legal climate nationally.

The Impact Of The Summer Olympics On Its Host City: The Costs Outweigh The Tangible Benefits, Steven Rosenblum
The Impact Of The Summer Olympics On Its Host City: The Costs Outweigh The Tangible Benefits, Steven Rosenblum
Honors Projects in History and Social Sciences
In the eyes of a host city, the reason to host the Summer Olympic Games has evolved from shining glory on athletic feats to receiving the perceived benefits from the opportunity. In the current times, there are a record number of Olympic events generating a demand for the construction of a larger amount of Games facilities than ever before. However, nations still vie for the winning bid to host the Olympics in one of their cities. This paper seeks to show that the costs of hosting the Games outweigh its tangible benefits. In detail, it will look at the financial, …

This paper examines the ability of supervisory information to explain variation in the Credit Default Swap Market. Using data from the fourth quarter of 2004 to the third quarter of 2008, variation in CDS was able to explained well using only Call Report Data. These Call Report data that are proxies for credit risk, leverage risk, and liquidity risk are found to be significant in at least one model. There is evidence of both omitted variables and heteroskedasticity in both models. Further work that controls for the movements in related markets, namely the equities market, and the use of Heteroskedasticity-consistent …

Going Global: Factors Influencing U.S.-Based Smes’ International Market Access, Jayati Ghosh, Denise Lucy, Françoise Lepage
Collected Faculty and Staff Scholarship
Globalization promotes vast business opportunities for trade, flow of capital, ideas, and people. In order to integrate into the global economy, countries tend to promote policies, which in turn, help to remove barriers to the flow of investment, goods, and services. While there is ample information describing how multinational corporations have benefited from globalization through greater access to international markets and investment, there is a need to identify ways to unburden small to medium-sized enterprises so that they can reach their potential in the global economy. Barriers vary across business sectors. However, there are fundamental impediments that prevail, in general. …

Transactive memory systems (TMS) support knowledge sharing and coordination in groups. TMS are enabled by the encoding, storage, retrieval, and communication of knowledge by domain experts-knowing who knows what. The NASA Ames Intelligent Robotics Group provides an example of how TMS theoretical boundaries are stretched in actual use. This group is characterized as being highly innovative as they routinely engage in field studies that are inherently difficult due to time and technology resource constraints. We provide an expanded view of TMS that includes the technology support system available to this group, and possible further extensions to NASA's or other such …
