Computing Exact 1-Sided Limits For Relative Risk, Chris Lloyd Dec 2010

Computing Exact 1-Sided Limits For Relative Risk, Chris Lloyd

Chris J. Lloyd

A simple construction for optimal and exact upper confidence limits subject to an ordering constraint was given by Buehler (1957) and extended by Lloyd and Kabaila (2003). Computing these limits requires exact calculation of certain tail probabilities and optimisation of potentially erratic functions of the nuisance parameter. Naive implementation results in limits that are computationally unreliable and highly burdensome. For two dimensional problems based on likelihood based statistics it is shown how to avoid the computational burden. Problems with the optimisation can be mitigated by applying two quite different computational strategies which tend to break down under different conditions and …

A Semantic Analysis Approach For Assessing Professionalism Using Free-Form Text Entered Online, Roger H. Blake Dec 2010

A Semantic Analysis Approach For Assessing Professionalism Using Free-Form Text Entered Online, Roger H. Blake

Roger H. Blake

This paper presents the results of an experimental study to measure professionalism for the purpose of assessing a professional development program. Soft skills such as professionalism are increasingly recognized as important, yet measuring and assessing these skills, typically best acquired experientially, has remained challenging. Following established research, we conceptualize professionalism as a construct with the dimensions of autonomy, commitment, belief in public service, self-regulation, and the use of a professional organization as a major referent. We demonstrate how these dimensions can be expressed and the professionalism of free-form text responses measured. These responses are reflections submitted online by participants in …

Antecedents To Students’ Performance In Mba Programs, Riza Dogan Dec 2010

Antecedents To Students’ Performance In Mba Programs, Riza Dogan

Riza Dogan

ABSTRACT. Graduate schools of business use several criteria for admitting applicants into their program with the intent of weaning out those who are unlikely to succeed in their MBA program. It is important to select promising students who will succeed in the program because successful completion of the MBA and immediate job placement directly impacts the reputation of the business school. Standardized tests like GMAT/GRE, undergraduate grade point average (UGPA), the length and quality of work experience etc. are some of the factors that admission committees consider before making admission decisions. The literature review suggests that GMAT scores and UGPA …

Ownership, Bank Organization And Retail Lending In A Low Income Area, Paola Bongini, Laura Nieri, Maria Luisa Di Battista, Simone Rossi

The focus of this study is on the organizational features of banks operating in the South of Italy, namely major Italian banking groups and local independent banks. In our opinion, in order to evaluate the allocative and operational efficiency of the Southern Italian banking system, the issue to be addressed relates to the potential heterogeneous behavior between banks which are “truly local” – i.e. those banks whose real decisional centres are located in the Southern regions – with respect to those banks operating in the South but which have their decisional centres located in the Centre-North of the country (“outer …

The Europeanisation Of The British Political Marketplace, Patrick Butler, Neil Collins, Richard Speed Dec 2010

The Europeanisation Of The British Political Marketplace, Patrick Butler, Neil Collins, Richard Speed

Richard Speed

The coalition government that resulted from the 2010 general election represents a new scenario in the British political marketplace with implications for political marketing theory and practice. The modelling of political marketing in the UK has evolved in relatively stable market conditions in which majority governments are elected; the market restructure arising from the 2010 election outcome offers an opportunity for a revised understanding of the field. Political science has established an important and dynamic body of knowledge that explains the founding and operation of coalitions. A comparative appraisal of coalition government and commercial cooperative arrangements indicates some commonalities. Western …

An Investigation Of Voluntary Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting In A Market Governance System: Australian Evidence, Carolyn Windsor Dec 2010

An Investigation Of Voluntary Corporate Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reporting In A Market Governance System: Australian Evidence, Carolyn Windsor

Carolyn Windsor

Purpose – Institutional governance theory is used to explain voluntary corporate greenhouse gas (GHG) reporting in the context of a market governance system in the absence of climate change public policy. This paper seeks to hypothesise that GHG reporting is related to internal organisation systems, external privately promulgated guidance and EU ETS trading.

Design/methodology/approach – A two-stage approach is used. The initial model examines whether firms’ GHG disclosures are associated with internal organisation systems factors: environmental management systems (EMS), corporate governance quality and environmental management committees as well as external private guidance provided by the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and …

A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison Dec 2010

A Conceptual Model Of Academic Success For Student-Athletes, Keith Harrison

Dr. C. Keith Harrison

Concern over the academic talent development of Division I student–athletes has led to increased research to explain variations in their academic performance. Although a substantial amount of attention has been given to the relationship between student–athletes and their levels of academic success, there remain critical theoretical and analytical gaps. The purpose of this article is to develop a conceptual model to understand and explain the cumulative processes and characteristics—as a whole and in stages—that influence academic success for Division I student–athletes. Research on student–athletes and academic success is reviewed and synthesized to provide a rationale for the basic elements of …

Cognitive Processes In Object-Oriented Requirements Engineering Practice: Analogical Reasoning And Mental Modelling, Linda Dawson Dec 2010

Cognitive Processes In Object-Oriented Requirements Engineering Practice: Analogical Reasoning And Mental Modelling, Linda Dawson

Associate Professor Linda Dawson

This paper presents a background in cognitive processes such as problem solving and analogical reasoning for considering modeling from an object-oriented perspective within the domain of requirements engineering. The paper then describes a research project and the findings from a set of four cases which examine professional practice from perspective of cognitive modeling for object-oriented requirements engineering. In these studies, it was found that the analysts routinely built models in their minds and refined them before committing them to paper or communicating these models to others. The studies also showed that objectoriented analysts depend on analogical reasoning where they use …

The Importance Of Being Known: Relationship Banking And Credit Limits, Atreya Chakraborty Dec 2010

The Importance Of Being Known: Relationship Banking And Credit Limits, Atreya Chakraborty

Atreya Chakraborty

This paper measures the importance of bank-firm relationships in obtaining higher credit “limits.” We use data from a relatively unused section of the National Survey of Small Business Finance (NSSBF, 1993) on credit limits, credit sources, and contract terms for firms with lines of credit from multiple banks. This lets us isolate the credit limit that each bank provides the same firm, eliminating the need to control for often immeasurable, unreliable, or firm-specific “soft” information. For a median Line of Credit (LOC) of $250,000, we find that a bank with a five-year information advantage provides a LOC limit that is …

Contextual Primes, Trust And Negotiators’ Reactions To A Crisis, Daniel Druckman, Mara Olekalns Dec 2010

Contextual Primes, Trust And Negotiators’ Reactions To A Crisis, Daniel Druckman, Mara Olekalns

Mara Olekalns

Using a simulated bilateral negotiation over several security issues, we test the relationship between crises and turning points in negotiation. We explore how variations in the negotiation context influence negotiators’ reactions to an identical event – a crisis – during the negotiation. Negotiators were primed to focus on one of three features of the negotiating context (transaction costs, mutual dependence, shared identity) which we hypothesized would influence crisis-turning point relationship. In their roles as national representatives, negotiators in each condition were presented with a crisis and asked to decide whether to reach an immediate agreement, continue negotiating, or re-frame the …

Humanitarian Logistics And The Cluster Approach: Global Shifts And The U.S. Perspective, Nezih Altay, Melissa Labonte

Nezih Altay

There is growing recognition among key humanitarian organizations that logistics plays an essential role in achieving greater synergies across and within the myriad of actors and institutions that currently constitute the humanitarian industry. In this chapter we examine the implications resulting from the establishment of the United Nations’ Cluster Approach strategy in responding to complex humanitarian emergencies. Specifically, we analyse the evolution of the Logistics Cluster with respect to key factors such as preparedness, coordination, accountability, and information and knowledge management. In the five years and 36 country roll-outs since its establishment, the Logistics Cluster gets high marks operationally for …

Attribution Theory In The Organizational Sciences: A Case Of Unrealized Potential, Marie T. Dasborough

Marie T Dasborough

We argue that although attributional processes appear to affect virtually all goal and reward oriented behavior in organizations, they have not received adequate attention in the organizational sciences. In this Incubator, we encourage scholars to unlock the potential of attribution theory to develop more complete explanations of organizational behavior. Copyright # 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

A 2x2 Conceptual Foundation For Entrepreneurial Discovery Theory., Patrick J. Murphy Dec 2010

A 2x2 Conceptual Foundation For Entrepreneurial Discovery Theory., Patrick J. Murphy

Patrick J. Murphy

Theories about entrepreneurial discovery are important to entrepreneurship. However, the dominant conceptual foundation underlying such theories hinders their development. It assumes that opportunities form based on either deliberate search or serendipitous discovery. I examine this unidimensional logic and identify a gap in its informative content. Then, I reframe it into orthogonal dimensions. The multidimensional model describes the same cases as the unidimensional model but also describes what the unidimensional model cannot, including cases that are high or low on both dimensions. This extension yields a 2x2 conceptual foundation for entrepreneurial discovery theory that promotes the development and coordination of distinct …

Operations Strategy Formulation: Shifting From Grasberg Open-Pit Surface Mining To Underground Mining, Togar M. Simatupang Tms

Togar M Simatupang TMS

PT Freeport Indonesia has decided to alter its mining operations from open-pit mining to underground mining in Grasberg. A change of mining area focus directly affects its related departments, and even need new operations strategy to address the transition. Considering its long-term run of mining operations, its strategic issues are assessed by using Slack and Lewis operations strategy model, and decisions are made through the Quantitative Strategic Planning Matrix (QSPM) tool. Previously, the assessment of company’s current business and corporate strategy was conducted by applying SWOT analysis and complemented with the Strategic Factors Analysis Summary (SFAS) as the point-of-reference of …

Street Agents: Third Party Involvement In College Football Recruiting, Brandon S. Foster Dec 2010

Street Agents: Third Party Involvement In College Football Recruiting, Brandon S. Foster

Scott Foster

In the ever changing landscape of college football recruiting, third parties, otherwise known as “Street Agents,” have become an emerging problem for college football coaches in their recruitment of prospective collegiate student-athletes. This is evidenced by the recent NCAA issues at the University of Oregon and Willie Lyles revolving around the recruitment of student-athletes during 7-on-7 summer football camps. In essence, high school football coaches are being surgically removed from the recruiting atmosphere because these third parties are developing the necessary relationships with the student-athletes and are able to direct them to the school of their choice because they host …

Yes, Dividends Are Disappearing: Worldwide Evidence, Ali M. Fatemi, Recep Bildik Dec 2010

Yes, Dividends Are Disappearing: Worldwide Evidence, Ali M. Fatemi, Recep Bildik

Ali M Fatemi

This study examines the patterns in payout policies worldwide. Utilizing data from a sample of more than 17,000 companies from 33 different countries, we find evidence in support of a significant worldwide decline in the propensity to pay dividends. Most of the decline is due to the payout policies of smaller and less profitable firms with comparatively more investment opportunities. We find that larger firms, those with higher profitability, and firms with low growth opportunities have a greater propensity to pay dividends. The proportion of dividend payers varies substantially across industries as well. However, the proportion of firms paying dividends …

Designing Is Service Strategy: An Information Acceleration Approach, Tim Coltman Dec 2010

Designing Is Service Strategy: An Information Acceleration Approach, Tim Coltman

Tim Coltman

Information technology-based innovation involves considerable risk requiring insight and foresight; yet our understanding of the way in which managers develop the insight to support new breakthrough applications is limited and remains obscured by high levels of technical and market uncertainty. This paper applies discrete choice analysis to support improved empirical explanation of how and why decisions are made in information systems. A new experimental method based on information acceleration is also applied to improve prediction of alternative IS service strategies. Both explanation and prediction are important to IS research and these two methods complement each other in behaviourally sound ways. …
