Digital Accessibility In The Hospitality And Tourism Industry: Legal And Ethical Considerations, Debra D. Burke, Kenneth J. Sanney, Dan Clapper
William & Mary Business Law Review
Federal law requires accessibility for public sector websites. What about the web pages and apps of hotels, restaurants, and tourism providers? The Americans with Disabilities Act may cover private sector websites if they are considered a place of public accommodation, but the law is unclear. This Article will provide an overview of the legal responsibilities of operators to provide accessibility to persons with disabilities, discuss the World Wide Web Consortium’s guidelines for web accessibility, and argue that the hospitality and tourism industry has a unique ethical obligation to fill in the gap where the legal system has failed this population.
Regional Household Economic Stress And Retail Sales Fluctuations, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Ana P. Gutierrez-Zubiate
Regional Household Economic Stress And Retail Sales Fluctuations, Thomas M. Fullerton Jr., Ana P. Gutierrez-Zubiate
Departmental Papers (E & F)
Economic stress indices are used to monitor business cycle conditions in several regions.Although the deployment of these tools is spreading, there have been relatively few efforts to empirically assess the performance of these gauges, especially at the regional level. This study takes advantage of one such index that is published monthly and has more than 15 years of historical data. Results obtained confirm an inverse relationship between household economic duress and retail sales activity, but it is not found to be statistically reliable over the long-run.Deviations from equilibrium are found to last for 142 months.More relevantly, a 1-point increase in the index …

Issued Patents In A University’S Institutional Repository, Suzanne Reinman, Janet Ahrberg
Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association
Beginning in 2016, patents issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted to Oklahoma State University were included in SHAREOK (https://shareok.org/.). The joint institutional repository for the Oklahoma State University Libraries (OSU) and the University of Oklahoma Libraries (OU), SHAREOK serves as the home for the intellectual output of both communities and will ultimately include digital dissertations, faculty publications, digital special collections, open access publications, and open educational resources. Including patents has increased the depth of the collection and allows them to be searched or indexed by date, author, title, and subject/classification. Using DSpace software, the contents of …

Sovereign Immunity Issues For Tech Transfer Programs At State Universities, Agnes Gambill
Sovereign Immunity Issues For Tech Transfer Programs At State Universities, Agnes Gambill
Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association
Technology transfer is the process of transforming research and ideas into viable commercial opportunities. Notable examples of tech transfer include Google, artificial intelligence, life-saving vaccines, and renewable energy technology. Universities and colleges play an important role in the technology transfer process, ranging from brokering commercial partnerships, negotiating license agreements, and protecting intellectual property. Valuable patents are often at stake, and as a result, universities should anticipate litigation risks. State universities, in particular, face new and unusual challenges as a result of their status as state entities. Under the 11th Amendment, state universities, as an arm of the state, can claim …

Piug: Patent Information Users Group, Inc.: A History Of The International Society For Patent Information Professionals, Barbara J. Hampton
Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association
Efforts to view and analyze patents began soon after the first patents were filed in the novel system founded in the U.S. Constitution. In the succeeding 200 plus years, classification and indexing tools have evolved from paper to digital, with searching demanding ever-higher skills. Answering the need of patent researchers and analysts for advocacy, scholarship, and professional education, leading searchers founded the Patent Information Users Group, Inc., now the pre-eminent professional organization for patent searchers in the United States. It offers formal coursework for prospective patent searchers, colloquia, and conferences where novice searchers can master their craft. Searchers, who often …

Patent And Trademark Resource Center Websites: A Content Analysis, Jared Hoppenfeld
Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association
Patent and Trademark Resource Centers (PTRCs) serve as an off-site connection to the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Approximately 85 PTRCs exist to assist inventors, entrepreneurs, and researchers by providing facilities, resources, and expertise. Most of these libraries also have a website which, in addition to USPTO webpages, serves as a gateway to the world of patent and trademark research. These websites provide access to various resources while also functioning as an outreach tool to the public.
This study included a content analysis of 79 websites belonging to PTRC libraries. After a literature review of other website studies, …

Essays On Consumer Online Search And Digital Content Consumption, Shuo Zhang
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In my dissertation, I apply empirical quantitative methods to marketing research and investigate consumer online search and purchase patterns, as well as digital consumption behaviors and the potential implication for marketing managers. This dissertation consists of two chapters. Chapter 1 studies the consumer shopping channel choice when they search and shop for products online. Mobile phones have emerged as a major channel for online shopping as an alternative to PCs. Despite more consumers using mobile phones, the conversion rate on the mobile channel is lower than that on the PC channel. In this study, we propose a structural consumer search-and-purchase …

China And The Us- The Behemoths Trade War, Mingwei Chen
China And The Us- The Behemoths Trade War, Mingwei Chen
Master's Projects and Capstones
China and the US are the world’s largest economies and the largest mutual trade partners. The US has also held the position of the world’s largest economy for most of the current fiscal age. However, China is rising, largely bolstered by a great population, resource repository and government support in its quest to become a leading global powerhouse. As a major trading partner with the US, the rise of China impedes some of the growth potential of the US economy. One of the largest areas is the manufacturing sector where China is an emerging force that seeks to establish its …
Essays On Asset Pricing: A Model Comparison Perspective, Lingxiao Zhao
Essays On Asset Pricing: A Model Comparison Perspective, Lingxiao Zhao
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In my dissertation, I focus on theoretical and empirical asset pricing from a Bayesian model comparison perspective. In the first Chapter, revisiting the framework of Barillas and Shanken (2018), BS henceforth, we show that the Bayesian marginal likelihood-based model comparison method in that paper is unsound: the priors on the nuisance parameters across models must satisfy a change of variable property for densities that is violated by the Jeffreys priors used in the BS method. Extensive simulation exercises confirm that the BS method performs unsatisfactorily. We derive a new class of improper priors on the nuisance parameters, starting from a …

Swimming Pool Environment And Respiratory Health Issues Experienced By Masters Swimmers: Results From A Literature Review And Survey Of United States Masters Swimming Clubs, Jody C. Gan, Julia Snegg, William Harder
International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education
After three members of a Masters adult swim club died of lung cancer, both a literature review and survey were conducted with representatives from 746 United States Masters Swimming clubs to explore a possible relationship between swimming and cancers of the respiratory tract. Six other clubs reported known cancers of the respiratory tract among club members, but none of the other 740 clubs reported a similar cluster of lung cancer. More clubs reported cases of chronic respiratory infections and widespread complaints about air quality. While no studies exploring a relationship between swimming and lung cancer could be found in the …

Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting: The Case Of The Fashion Industry, Karina Zhao
Corporate Social Responsibility Reporting: The Case Of The Fashion Industry, Karina Zhao
Honors Scholar Theses
This paper examines the nature of corporate social responsibility (CSR), with a focus on corporations within the fashion industry. First, I discuss the evolution of CSR from its origin in the 1930s until present day, along with global trends that have risen in respect to emerging economies, industry sectors, and regulatory change. Then, I summarize factors that motivate firms to prepare and provide CSR reports – i.e., the determinants of voluntary disclosure of CSR reports. In addition, I discuss to what extent these reports are regulated and assured across the globe, as an increasing number of corporations participate in disclosing …

Examining Consumers' Trust In The Food Supply Chain, Chadelle R.H. Robinson, Taylor K. Ruth, R.G. "Tre" Easterly Iii, Fayth Franzoy, Jay Lillywhite
Journal of Applied Communications
Consumers are concerned about the quality and safety of their food at all times during the food supply chain, but sensationalized media coverage, lack of knowledge, and recent recalls have made it difficult for consumers to trust the agricultural industry. Because trust drives risk perceptions and acceptance, it is important for agricultural communicators to understand how personal characteristics influence trust in the food supply chain. To fulfill the purpose of this study, a national quota sample of 847 responses to an online questionnaire were collected in March 2019. The results indicated respondents held a moderate level of trust toward production …

Perceptions Of Organizational Politics, Penny Putnam Collins, Megan Paul
Perceptions Of Organizational Politics, Penny Putnam Collins, Megan Paul
Umbrella Summaries
What are perceptions of organizational politics? Perceptions of organizational politics (POP) is defined as an individual’s subjective assessment of the degree to which their work setting is believed to be self-serving of some individuals and groups, to the detriment of others (Ferris, Harrell-Cook, & Dulebohn, 2000). A popular and recommended 15-item measure assesses POP through three factors: general political behavior, going along to get ahead, and pay and promotion (Kacmar & Carlson, 1997). Example items from each factor include, “People in this organization attempt to build themselves up by tearing others down,” “Sometimes it is easier to remain quiet than …

Documentation produced by these committees is widely available to the public, …

We live in a data-driven economy. Many people feel like consumers are on the losing end of an economic data-battle with tech giants, but this is simply not true; our data can drive innovation. That’s right—personal data collected from you and me can influence new technologies that will improve our lives. This should excite us, but our fear of losing data privacy can quell our excitement for progress and even restrict innovation. Our quality of life has already begun to improve through data driven innovation, and technological progress is not slowing down. If we let our fear of losing data …
