Copyrights And Beyond In The Digital Age, Thomas G. Field Jr.

Law Faculty Scholarship

At one time, only works visible to the naked eye were copyrightable, but that has long since changed. Now, works capable of perception only by use of VCRs or computers, for example, enjoy the same protection as books, paintings and sculpture. In 1994, William S. Strong reported that he had "heard Chicken Littles say that the sky is falling in on copyright owners" in the digital age and predicted to the contrary. He was right; publishers' problems may have changed in degree but not in kind. For important, if not critical, internet needs to be met, providers must recoup costs.

Monitoring Cattle Behavior And Pasture Use With Gps And Gis, L. W. Turner, M. C. Udal, B. T. Larson, S. A. Shearer

Management and Monitoring of Farm Animals Collection

Precision agriculture is already being used commercially to improve variability management in row crop agriculture. In the same way, understanding how spatial and temporal variability of animal, forage, soil and landscape features affect grazing behavior and forage utilization provides potential to modify pasture management, improve efficiency of utilization, and maximize profits. Recent advances in global positioning system (GPS) technology have allowed the development of lightweight GPS collar receivers suitable for monitoring animal position at 5-min intervals. The GPS data can be imported into a geographic information system (GIS) to assess animal behavior characteristics and pasture utilization. This paper describes application …

Knowledge Discovery In Biological Databases : A Neural Network Approach, Qicheng Ma Aug 2000

Knowledge Discovery In Biological Databases : A Neural Network Approach, Qicheng Ma

Dissertations

Knowledge discovery, in databases, also known as data mining, is aimed to find significant information from a set of data. The knowledge to be mined from the dataset may refer to patterns, association rules, classification and clustering rules, and so forth. In this dissertation, we present a neural network approach to finding knowledge in biological databases. Specifically, we propose new methods to process biological sequences in two case studies: the classification of protein sequences and the prediction of E. Coli promoters in DNA sequences. Our proposed methods, based oil neural network architectures combine techniques ranging from Bayesian inference, coding theory, …

Sport And Sex, Richard C. Crepeau Aug 2000

Sport And Sex, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Orlando Predators, reigning champions of Arena Football for two years running, had a billboard promotion at the beginning of this season showing a close-up of the more than ample breasts of a local woman known as "Laurie." The billboard caption read, "Fake Right. Fake Left." Now I know people around the country are saying, "what do you expect in a state that is the home of a mammary-themed restaurant chain?" but in fact there were people locally who found this in bad taste.

Thesis, Kwanghui Lim Aug 2000

Thesis, Kwanghui Lim

Kwanghui Lim

This thesis comprises three essays on the relationships among basic research, applied research, and innovation. Earlier research emphasized that absorbing external knowledge requires effort and investment (Cohen and Levinthal, 1989; 1990). This thesis explores various mechanisms through which absorptive capacity is developed, including a firm's R&D, its connectedness to the external scientific community, the provision of a science-oriented research environment, and investment in basic research. The chief contribution of this dissertation is to document the many ways in which firms develop absorptive capacity, and how absorptive capacity varies across industry, stage of technology development, and scientific area.

The first essay …

Is Sydney Ready For The Olymics And Are The Olympians Ready For Sydney?, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

It is now less than a month from the opening of the Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, where it will be winter when the games begin and spring when they end. It will be fall in the Northern Hemisphere before the games end, and summer nowhere, expect perhaps in Lausanne where the sun always shines at the Court of Juan Antonio the Great.
