The Value Of Open Market Repurchases Of Closed-End Fund Shares, Gary E. Porter, Rodney L. Roenfeldt, Neil W. Sicherman Apr 1999

The Value Of Open Market Repurchases Of Closed-End Fund Shares, Gary E. Porter, Rodney L. Roenfeldt, Neil W. Sicherman

Faculty Publications

The authors illustrate the value to shareholders when closed-end funds repurchase shares at a discount from net asset value. Repurchases increase share price even when there is no asymmetric information concerning the value of the underlying assets and the percentage discount remains unchanged following the repurchase. Expected gains to shareholders are derived from capturing the discount on the assets associated with the shares repurchased. In an analysis of 27 open market repurchase announcements by closed-end funds, the regression coefficient estimate that measures the association between the actual excess return and the expected increase in share price is essentially 1.0.

Financial Management And Uni Students: A Proposal For Financial Education In The General Education Program At Uni, Carrie Schnieders Jan 1999

Financial Management And Uni Students: A Proposal For Financial Education In The General Education Program At Uni, Carrie Schnieders

Presidential Scholars Theses (1990 – 2006)

The survey results were compiled ( except where noted) as a whole sample, as no significant differences were found to exist between sex and major. Class standing (and therefore, age) did result in some notable differences in the credit card and student loan categories, which is specified. The first half of the research is to find out what basic financial management skills UNI students have or utilize. The second phase of the research focused on how students felt about their financial knowledge, and if they felt a personal financial management class would be beneficial both to themselves and other students …

An Empirical Comparison Using Both The Term Structure Of Interest Rates And Alternative Models In Pricing Options On 90-Day Bab Futures, Irene Chau Jan 1999

An Empirical Comparison Using Both The Term Structure Of Interest Rates And Alternative Models In Pricing Options On 90-Day Bab Futures, Irene Chau

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The use of the term structure of interest rates to price options is relatively new in the literature. It describes the relationship between interest rates and the maturities of bonds. The first model that described the interest rate process was the Vasicek (1977) model. There have been many studies on the formulation of theoretical pricing models. Yet limited empirical research has been done in the area of actually testing the models. In this thesis we report the results of a set of tests of the models indicated below. This paper involves analysis of the pricing errors of the Black model …

Bond Rating Agencies And Stock Analysts: Who Knows What When?, Louis H. Ederington, Jeremy C. Goh Dec 1998

Bond Rating Agencies And Stock Analysts: Who Knows What When?, Louis H. Ederington, Jeremy C. Goh

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Both bond ratings agencies and stock analysts evaluate publicly traded companies and communicate their opinions to investors. Comparing the timelines of each, it is found that Granger causality flows both ways. While most bond downgrades are preceded by declines in actual and forecasting earnings, both actual earnings and forecasts of future earnings tend to fall following downgrades. Although part of this post-downgrade forecast revision can be attributed to negative news regarding actual earnings, most appears to be reaction to the downgrade itself. Little change is found in actual earnings following upgrades. Analysts, however, tend to increase their forecasts of future …
