Four Functions Of Statistical Significance Tests, Xinshu Zhao Dec 2016

Four Functions Of Statistical Significance Tests, Xinshu Zhao

Professor Xinshu ZHAO

Statistical significance test, one of the most important contributions of mathematical statistics, was designed for projection, namely to project from a sample to its population, by estimating the probability (p) that a difference
observed in a probability sample does not exist in the population from which the sample has been drawn. In social sciences, however, researchers have used the significance tests for three other functions, namely proof, prescreen, and prototyping.

Effects Of Management-Development Practices On Hospitality Management Graduates' Job Satisfaction And Intention To Stay, Edwin Torres, Howard Adler

Edwin Torres

Companies have long recognized the importance of training and developing their managers to prepare them for their short- and long-term careers. Formal management-development programs and other less formal means of management development abound in the hospitality industry. The present study explores management-development practices, procedures, and techniques, and their effects on job satisfaction and organizational commitment

The Influence Of Others On The Vacation Experience: An Ethnographic Study Of Psychographics, Decision Making, And Group Dynamics Among Young Travelers, Edwin Torres

Edwin Torres

The vacation experience is often enjoyed in the company of others. Whereas scholars have focused on the consumer behaviors of mature travelers, young travelers have received less attention. The present study explores customer-to-customer interactions among young travelers (in their 20s and 30s) within a European tour-group setting. Furthermore, it attempts to understand the influence such travelers have on one another. The decision-making patterns, role of the tour guide, group dynamics, and psychographic preferences are studied from an ethnographic approach. Results indicate that the young travel segment is not as homogeneous as previously conceived. Notable differences in activities, interests, and opinions …

Conflict Between Controlling Family Owners And Minority Shareholders: Much Ado About Nothing, Geoffrey P. Martin Dr, Luis R. Gomez-Mejia Prof, Marianna Makri, Pascual Berrone Nov 2016

Conflict Between Controlling Family Owners And Minority Shareholders: Much Ado About Nothing, Geoffrey P. Martin Dr, Luis R. Gomez-Mejia Prof, Marianna Makri, Pascual Berrone

Geoffrey P Martin

We examine the unique nature of conflict between controlling family owners and minority shareholders (principal-principal conflict) in publicly traded family controlled firms through examining shareholder proposals. Implicit in prior governance and family business research has been that non-family shareholders are likely to be in conflict with the dominant family owners. In general, we find that much of this fear may be unwarranted except under specific circumstances. Our findings elucidate sources of heterogeneity in family firm principal-principal conflict and add greater nuance to our understanding of this type of agency problem within family firms.

Amp Bridging Finance And Behavioral Scholarship On Agent Risk Sharing And Risk Taking, Geoffrey P. Martin, Luis R. Gomez-Mejia Prof, Robert M. Wiseman

Geoffrey P Martin

A large volume of research has examined agent risk taking and the contracting problem of risk sharing – the sharing of performance risk across agent and principal – to advance our knowledge of mechanisms that can align the assumed divergent interests and risk preferences of the managerial-agent and shareholder-principal. This research has been undertaken in two research streams that appear to have operated in silos, utilizing different theoretical frameworks and methodological approaches: financial economics and behavioral science. We review the theoretical paradigms and empirical findings deriving from both fields in order to identify opportunities for cross-fertilization and to advance future …

Developing A Holistic Approach For Tackling Undeclared Work: Background Paper, Colin C. Williams Nov 2016

Developing A Holistic Approach For Tackling Undeclared Work: Background Paper, Colin C. Williams

Colin C Williams

What is a holistic approach to tackling undeclared work? A holistic policy approach towards tackling the undeclared economy uses in a strategic and coordinated manner the full range of both the direct and indirect policy approaches and measures available to increase the power of, and trust in, authorities respectively.

Direct approachesreduce the costs and increase the benefits of operating on a declared basis, and increase the costs and reduce the benefits of operating undeclared. To do this, it uses:
·      Deterrence measures that detect and punish participation in undeclared work firstly, by increasing the perceived or actual …

Investing In China: Opportunity And Barriers For Foreign Investors In A Complex Chinese Economy.Pdf, Robert Geer Nov 2016

Investing In China: Opportunity And Barriers For Foreign Investors In A Complex Chinese Economy.Pdf, Robert Geer

Robert Geer

Introduction:
China’s economy has exploded since the introduction of free market policies which brought the populous nation to the world stage. China now boasts the second largest economy in the world and will overtake the United States in the near future. The easing of restrictions on foreign direct investment (FDI) allows foreign businesses to enter the marketplace easier than in the past, which is making the switch to China easier for businesses. Obstacles are still prevalent in the communist controlled country, which can cause trouble for businesses not properly prepared for the move into the Chinese economy. However, there are …

On The Measurement Of Capital-Intensity, David Lim Nov 2016

On The Measurement Of Capital-Intensity, David Lim

Prof. David Lim

The problem of the choice of technique in less developed countries has featured prominently in the literature on economic develop- ment I. This paper shows that despite such interest attempts to measure capital-intensity still leave much to be desired and argues that a modified capital-labour ratio, with capital adjusted for utilization and labour to refer to the number of production workers on the biggest shift, is the theoretically most suitable measure of capital-intensity...

Do Foreign Companies Pay Higher Wages Than Their Local Counterparts In Malaysian Manufacturing?, David Lim Nov 2016

Do Foreign Companies Pay Higher Wages Than Their Local Counterparts In Malaysian Manufacturing?, David Lim

Prof. David Lim

This paper shows that foreign companies pay higher wages than their local counterparts in Malaysian manufacturing. Step-wise regression analysis shows that this is due to two factors. The first, and perhaps the more important, is the greater capital intensity of the production processes used by foreign companies. The second is their tendency to pay wages that they consider, or that are considered to be, commensurate with the wages that they pay in their home countries. This may be called the demonstration effect of wage remuneration in less developed countries.

Craig Kimble, PharmD, MBA, MS, BCACP

Healthcare regulators are directing attention to the pharmaceutical supply chain with the passage of the Drug Quality and Security Act (DQSA) and the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA). Adoption of Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) technology has the ability to improve compliance, reduce costs, and improve safety in the supply chain but its implementation has been limited; primarily because of hardware and tag costs. The purpose of this research study was to analyze the benefits to the pharmaceutical industry and healthcare system of the adoption of RFID technology as a result of newly implemented supply chain regulations. The methodology was a …

Environment, Equity And Economic Development Goals: Understanding Differences In Local Economic Development Strategies, Xue Zhang, George C. Homsy Nov 2016

Environment, Equity And Economic Development Goals: Understanding Differences In Local Economic Development Strategies, Xue Zhang, George C. Homsy

George Homsy

What role do local governments play in promoting sustainable economic development? This article uses a 2014 national survey to analyze the relationship between local environment and social equity motivations and the kinds of economic development strategies local governments pursue (business incentives or community economic development policies). Municipalities that pay more attention to environmental sustainability and social equity use higher levels of community economic development tools and lower levels of business incentives. These places are also more likely to have written economic development plans, and involve more participants in the economic development process. By contrast, communities that employ higher levels of …

Restructuring Social Security: How Will Retirement Ages Respond?, Gary S. Fields, Olivia S. Mitchell Nov 2016

Restructuring Social Security: How Will Retirement Ages Respond?, Gary S. Fields, Olivia S. Mitchell

Gary S Fields

[Excerpt] Budgetary pressures on the Social Security system have increased in recent years, prompting a variety of proposals to restructure the U.S. retirement income program. Most of these proposals ignore the possibility that the retirement patterns of older workers are likely to respond to changes in the incentives to retire. This chapter presents two important pieces of information for policymakers. First, we provide previously unavailable evidence on how changes in the structure of Social Security benefits would alter the economic incentives to retire at different ages. Second, we compute how retirement patterns would change in response to altered incentives to …
