Realizing The Potential Of The Ambidextrous Firm, James Arthur Robins
Realizing The Potential Of The Ambidextrous Firm, James Arthur Robins
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Sustaining innovation in the face of pressures to be cost-competitive and make effective use of existing resources is not a new challenge, but recent acceleration of competition has pushed this issue high on the agenda for managers and researchers. Organizing and managing the “ambidextrous” company – a firm that excel in exploring new areas of productive knowledge and exploiting existing capabilities – has emerged as a major concern of strategic management. In this paper, we explore coordination problems that make it difficult for firms to realize their potential as ambidextrous competitors. Organizations may possess superior skills for both exploration and …
The Impact Of Financial Market And Resale Market On Firm Strategies, Zhiling Guo, Andrew B. Whinston
The Impact Of Financial Market And Resale Market On Firm Strategies, Zhiling Guo, Andrew B. Whinston
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The ever-increasing use of information technology (IT) in business transactions greatly expands firms? exposure to different electronic markets. This paper provides a framework to understand how firms can leverage different strategies across external financial markets and an internal resale market to improve overall profitability. We develop a model in which a group of risk-averse retailers sell a homogeneous product to their respective uncertain consumer markets. We study a scenario where an internal resale market can be constructed among the retailers and outside financial markets can be used to improve their ability to manage uncertainty. We identify strategies for retailers operating …

Multiagent Teamwork: Hybrid Approaches, Praveen Paruchuri, Emma Bowring, Ranjit Nair, Jonathan Pearce, Nathan Schurr, Milind Tambe, Pradeep Varakantham
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Today within the multiagent community, we see at least four competing methods to building multiagent systems: beliefdesireintention (BDI), distributed constraint optimization (DCOP), distributed POMDPs, and auctions or game-theoretic methods. While there is exciting progress within each approach, there is a lack of cross-cutting research. This article highlights the various hybrid techniques for multiagent teamwork developed by the teamcore group. In particular, for the past decade, the TEAMCORE research group has focused on building agent teams in complex, dynamic domains. While our early work was inspired by BDI, we will present an overview of recent research that uses DCOPs and distributed …
The Role Of European Governments In The Digital Economy, Arnoud Cyriel Leo De Meyer
The Role Of European Governments In The Digital Economy, Arnoud Cyriel Leo De Meyer
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
What is the role of government in the digital economy? It is not our intention to go into an in-depth ideological debate on whether governments should intervene in the business sector. We will try to adopt a pragmatic approach and explore what already happens in practice. It is up to the reader to make a judgment to what extent the governments should be involved in the ICT sector. There is enough indication that, due to network externality effects, governments need to take on an active role in stimulating an e-environment to jump-start the move toward a higher level of e-readiness.In …

The Future Of Compensation Professionals: According To Your Colleagues, Barbara Manny, Thomas Mcmullen, Richard S. Sperling, Dow Scott
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
As Bob Dylan sang, “The times they are a changing.” With opportunities to be more involved in major business decisions, compensation professionals have been asked to solve more difficult problems and face more difficult challenges. In turn, the profession needs to be able to step out of the comfort zone and be ready to seize these opportunities. From a survey of compensation professionals, it has become clear they feel their roles in the organization’s strategic business plans are growing. Only time will tell if compensation professionals’ perceptions will become reality. In May 2005, the authors conducted a survey to find …
"To Integrate Or To Differentiate?" - Towards Resolving A Multi-Channel Dilemma Investigation Of The Effects Of Channel Integration Strategies On Consumers' Evaluations Of Multi-Channel Utility And Their Adoption Of Multi-Channel Shopping, Elena Kiryanova Bernard
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Multi-channel retailers have been adopting different multi-channel formats that range from complete channel separation (e.g., Victoria's Secret) to close integration (e.g., Bed, Bath and Beyond). The purpose of this dissertation is to determine which multi-channel strategy offers the most value to multi-channel shoppers. The success of a multi-channel retailing strategy is believed to depend on the degree of channel complementarity as perceived by the retailer's customers. Channel complementarity is defined as the degree to which multiple retail channels work synergistically to create value. Complementary channels give customers integrated solutions that create more value than the sum of the parts. It …
Level Of Youth Voice In The Decision-Making Process Within The 4-H Youth Development Program As Perceived By State 4-H Program Leaders, State 4-H Youth Development Specialists, And 4-H Agents/Educators, Todd Anthony Tarifa
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This study aimed at determining the level of inclusiveness of youth voice in the decision-making process in the 4-H youth development program. It described the 4-H program’s position on youth voice among State 4-H Program Leaders, 4-H State Youth Development Specialists, and 4-H Youth Agents/Educators. The information gathered was utilized in identifying the level of inclusiveness of youth voice in the decision-making process to better understand how to suit youth’s needs, identify promising practices, and barriers. Three underlying constructs were identified that represented State 4-H Program Leader’s, 4-H Youth Development Specialist’s, and 4-H Agent’s/Educator’s personal views on youth voice in …

Veterinary Professionals' Workplace Learning In A Corporate Organization: An Ethnographic Study, James F. Steele
Doctor of Education (EdD)
The purpose of this study was to investigate learning orientations, strategies and tactics of veterinarians, and generate explanatory theory grounded in ethnographic data. A theory of approaches to transdisciplinary and disciplinary learning emerged from qualitative analysis of interviews, learning journals and field observations. Eleven subjects in 4 regions were newly employed by a corporate veterinary practice. This research is framed by theories of adult learning, workplace learning, and occupational community. The study was guided by 3 research questions about learning orientations, approaches, strategies and tactics veterinarians applied in the workplace. Question 1 asked about orientation toward learning. Question 2 aimed …

Assessing Student Entrepreneurial Capacity: Implications For Rural Communities And Higher Education, Mary C. Martin Ph.D., Henry Schwaller Mba
Journal of Business & Leadership: Research, Practice, and Teaching (2005-2012)
During the 1990s, the U.S. experienced a shift in job creation: large U.S. businesses laid off approximately 10 million workers, while entrepreneurs and small businesses created 20 million jobs during the same decade. Given this shift in job creation, it is clear that entrepreneurship is the new foundation of the U.S. economy. Rural communities, in particular, should be concerned about stimulating entrepreneurship given current challenges, such as declining and aging populations, loss of traditional industry, and declining wages. Entrepreneurial development is vital to the future success and growth of rural economies. The purpose of this study is to report the …
Animal Welfare Assurance Programs In Food Production: A Framework For Assessing The Options, D. Fraser
Animal Welfare Assurance Programs In Food Production: A Framework For Assessing The Options, D. Fraser
Farm Animal Welfare Collection
Various animal welfare assurance programs are being used to encourage or require the adoption of animal welfare standards in food production, and to assure the public that such standards are followed. The programs involve five main formats. Non-mandatory codes/guidelines are relatively easy to institute and appear well-supported by the industry, but provide only minimal assurance to the public unless measures are taken to ensure compliance. Programs based on government regulations and inter-governmental agreements are more challenging to institute; they are likely to generate less industry acceptance, but may provide more public confidence if enforcement is adequate. Product differentiation programs, and …

Extract:
Dynamics of Energy Consumption Pakistan has been facing severe imbalances in energy demand and supply for the last couple of decades. During early 1980s domestic supply of energy was fulfilling almost 86 percent of total domestic energy demand; a gap of 14 percent was being filled by imports. However, the demand – supply gap started increasing since then and reached to almost 47 percent by the year 2000 (see Figure S2.1).
Group Differences And Measurement Equivalence: Implications For Command Climate Survey Research And Practice, Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface, Adam Meade, Lori Foster Thompson, Don Martin
Group Differences And Measurement Equivalence: Implications For Command Climate Survey Research And Practice, Erich Dierdorff, Eric Surface, Adam Meade, Lori Foster Thompson, Don Martin
Erich C. Dierdorff
Military organizations use survey methodology to assess attitudes related to command climate. Many commands are staffed with both military and civilian personnel. However, no previous research has examined the equivalence of a command climate survey’s measurement properties across these types of personnel. Differences in the personnel systems and organizational socialization could lead to different views of various facets of a command climate survey, making direct comparisons or aggregations of group-level data inappropriate. Furthermore, men and women may also view aspects of command climate surveys differently. Using two administrations of a command climate survey in a U.S. Major Army Command, our …

Entrepreneurship Education: Towards A Discipline-Based Framework, Debra Johnson, Justin Craig, Ryan Hildebrand
Justin B. Craig
Purpose – The purpose of this exploratory research was to investigate whether: entrepreneurship in the higher education context can be distinguished by disciplined-based needs; and curricula can be developed around these needs. Design/methodology/approach – The authors reviewed the literature related to the development of professions in order to establish a sound theoretical base to distinguish disciplines that require stringent criteria, and which potentially would challenge the introduction of a more flexible curriculum that includes contemporary concepts such as entrepreneurship. The research then focused on two other groups of disciplines which lead to entrepreneurial opportunities with distinct needs in (principally) people …
Reading Tourism Texts In Context: A Critical Discourse Analysis, William Feighery
Reading Tourism Texts In Context: A Critical Discourse Analysis, William Feighery
William Feighery
This article discusses the method of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) employed in a study focusing on the textual representation of ethnocultural diversity by official tourism organizations (OTOs) in England. The underlying principles of CDA are outlined, as well as the specific approach adopted in the study. The study employed a three-dimensional approach to CDA, which included an analysis of written and spoken language as text, as discourse practice, and as social practice. By way of an example, a critical reading of a promotional text is provided that focuses on the dimension of discourse practice. This critical reading outlines some of …

Markov Chain Analyses Of Communication Processes In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith, Laurie Weingart
Markov Chain Analyses Of Communication Processes In Negotiation, Mara Olekalns, Philip Smith, Laurie Weingart
Mara Olekalns
Markov chain analysis provides a way to investigate how the communication processes in dyadic negotiations are affected by features of the negotiating context and how, in turn, differences in communication processes among dyads affect the quality of the final settlement. In Markov models, the communication process is represented as a sequence of transitions between states, which describes how tactics are used and how they are reciprocated during the course of a negotiation. This article provides an introduction to Markov chain analysis and shows, using simulated data, how Markov chain models may be analyzed using widely-available loglinear modeling software. Model selection, …

The Disposition Effect And Individual Investor Decisions: The Role Of Regret And Counterfactual Alternatives, Thomas Berry, Suzanne Fogel
The Disposition Effect And Individual Investor Decisions: The Role Of Regret And Counterfactual Alternatives, Thomas Berry, Suzanne Fogel
Thomas D Berry
Recent studies have documented a strong tendency for individual investors to delay realizing capital losses, while realizing gains prematurely (Odean [1996], Shefrin and Statman [1985], Weber and Camerer [1996]). This tendency has been termed the “disposition effect.” The disposition effect is inconsistent with normative approaches to stock sales, such as those based on tax losses (see, for example, Constantinides [1983]). We surveyed individual investors, and found that more respondents reported regret about holding on to a losing stock too long than about selling a winning stock too soon. This finding suggests that individual investors are consistently engaging in behavior that …

Foreign Exchange Intervention By The Bank Of Japan: Bayesian Analysis Using A Bivariate Stochastic Volatility Model, Michael Smith, Andrew Pitts
Foreign Exchange Intervention By The Bank Of Japan: Bayesian Analysis Using A Bivariate Stochastic Volatility Model, Michael Smith, Andrew Pitts
Michael Stanley Smith
A bivariate stochastic volatility model is employed to measure the effect of intervention by the Bank of Japan (BOJ) on daily returns and volume in the USD/YEN foreign exchange market. Missing observations are accounted for, and a data-based Wishart prior for the precision matrix of the errors to the transition equation that is in line with the likelihood is suggested. Empirical results suggest there is strong conditional heteroskedasticity in the mean-corrected volume measure, as well as contemporaneous correlation in the errors to both the observation and transition equations. A threshold model is used for the BOJ reaction function, which is …

Uncertainty, Insurance, And The Learned Hand Formula, Peter Grossman, Reed Cearley, Daniel Cole
Peter Z. Grossman
Note: Final definitive version is available at Oxford Journals. http://www.oxfordjournals.org Law and economics scholars have written extensively about how insurance markets affect the tort system. They have noted the beneficial cost-spreading function of insurance, as well as the detrimental incentive-distorting affects of insurance, stemming from problems of adverse selection and moral hazard. Surprisingly, however, scholars have over-looked one of the most important salutary functions that insurance serves for the tort system: it provides much of the information courts need to apply the Marginal Learned Hand Formula. This paper explains precisely how insurance markets collect and disseminate information about the expected …
