Do Investors Herd Intraday In Australian Equities?, Julia Henker, Thomas Henker, Anna Mitsios Jul 2014

Do Investors Herd Intraday In Australian Equities?, Julia Henker, Thomas Henker, Anna Mitsios

Thomas Henker

Purpose – The purpose of this research is to consider whether market wide herding occurs intraday.

Design/methodology/approach – Using the 1995 Christie and Huang and the 2000 Chang et al. models, the paper tests whether market wide and industry sector herding occurs intraday in the Australian equities market.

Findings – Neither market wide nor industry sector herding occurs intraday.

Research limitations/implications – Both herding measures focus on one specific type of herding, herding evidenced by changes in the cross-sectional return distribution. Therefore the herding measures are ill suited to capture the effects of period specific abnormally high or low market …

International Strategies And Ethics, Jodie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn Dec 2006

International Strategies And Ethics, Jodie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn

Ingrid Bonn

In this paper, we identify and discuss three different levels of ethics that can be implemented by organisations pursuing global, transnational or multinational strategies. Our main argument is that an organisations's approach to ethics depends on its level and type of international strategy adopted. Organisations pursuing global or transnational strategies are likely to regard their approach to ethics as an important strategic decision that needs to be implemented in all subsidiaries around the world. Organisations with multinational strategies are likely to face tension between head-office and subsidiary management if they operate at different levels of ethics.

The Natural Environment, Innovation And Firm Performance: A Comparative Study, Justin Craig, Clay Dibrell

Justin B. Craig

In this article, we investigate the effect of firm-level natural-environment-related policies on innovation and financial performance in family and nonfamily firms. Our findings demonstrate that family firms are better able to facilitate environmentally friendly firm policies associated with improved firm innovation and greater financial performance more effectively than their nonfamily competitors.

Exploring The Role Of Formal Bodies Of Knowledge In Defining A Discipline/Profession, P Morris, L Crawford, D Hodgson, M Shepherd, J Thomas

Lynn Crawford

Since the mid 1970s, project management associations around the world have made serious attempts to conduct themselves as professional associations. Traditional professions distinguished themselves by emphasising standards such as service to the public and competence in their field, and by ensuring that their membership meets these standards. An important element of a profession is ownership of a body of knowledge that is distinctive to the professional group. Project management associations have spent considerable time and effort in developing Bodies of Knowledge (BOKs) and their associated certification programs, and indeed the popularity of these has been notable. Yet there are problems, …

Enterprises Communication: An Empirical Analysis, Alberto Nobolo, Francesca Magli Oct 2006

Enterprises Communication: An Empirical Analysis, Alberto Nobolo, Francesca Magli

Alberto Nobolo

Abstract: Internalization and major changes now under way are taking investors and customers to demand more economics, commercial and social information. Stakeholders are, in fact, facing many opportunities and choices about their investments and purchases. The increase in competition and the birth of many New Economy companies, rather than assuring them and creating more suitable market situations (for example reduction in prices), is bringing more chaos in the knowledge/information on such companies. Enterprises, to satisfy such lack, should push on more communication. For stakeholders safeguard (after Enron, Parmalat and Cirio cracks), the communication changes and becomes more complex and disciplined. …

Practitioner Development: From Trained Technicians To Reflective Practitioners, Lynn Crawford, Peter Morris, Janice Thomas, Mark Winter

Lynn Crawford

The EPSRC funded Rethinking Project Management Network produced several insights into new directions for project management theory and practise, highlighting gaps between current theory and practise in several areas. This paper reviews the discussions around project management practitioner development that arose out of this rethinking process where project management is seen as growing from a predominantly technical skill-set to a broader practise of reflectively managing the things needed to provide a successful project outcome. In particular, the paper identifies and addresses the challenges of developing competent project managers in a world exhibiting increasingly complex project challenges, and when skilled resources …

Externality Effects Of Residential Property Values: The Example Of Noise Disamenities, David Clark Aug 2006

Externality Effects Of Residential Property Values: The Example Of Noise Disamenities, David Clark

David E. Clark

Studies conducted by the Federal Railroad Administration in the 1990s reveal that train whistle bans lead to higher accident rates at train crossings. However, advocates of these bans argue that they eliminate noise externalities that have a detrimental effect on residential home values. To assess this latter claim, an event study is conducted and hedonic models are estimated for three different areas in which Conrail unilaterally began ignoring local whistle bans. While the findings consistently show that proximity to rail lines has a negative and statistically important influence on home values, there is little evidence that the Conrail decision had …

Developing A Multidimensional Instrument To Measure Psychic Distance Stimuli, Douglas Dow, Amal Karunaratna Aug 2006

Developing A Multidimensional Instrument To Measure Psychic Distance Stimuli, Douglas Dow, Amal Karunaratna

Douglas Dow

This paper develops and tests a range of potential psychic distance stimuli including differences in culture, language, religion, education, and political systems. Using trade flows amongst a set of 38 nations as the dependent variable, it is shown that, while the majority of the proposed indicators prove to be statistically significant predictors of trade flows, the most common psychic distance surrogate: a composite measure of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions, is not significant.

Combining Technical Analysis And Neural Networks In The Australian Stockmarket, Bruce Vanstone, Gavin Finnie Aug 2006

Combining Technical Analysis And Neural Networks In The Australian Stockmarket, Bruce Vanstone, Gavin Finnie

Bruce Vanstone

One of the greatest difficulties facing a stock trader or investment manager is the stock selection process. In this process, the investor is faced with a large number of competing investments, and a fixed amount of capital. The goal is to spread the available capital across a reduced subset of the competing investments, with the aim of increasing the return. Typically, the investor relies on one of two main frameworks to guide the selection process, namely Fundamental Analysis, and Technical Analysis. This paper focuses on Technical Analysis, and implements a neural network which supports the stock selection process.

Developing Organizational Project Management Capability: Theory And Practice, Lynn Crawford Jul 2006

Developing Organizational Project Management Capability: Theory And Practice, Lynn Crawford

Lynn Crawford

This paper traces the evolution of conceptions of project management from the use of tools and techniques on standalone projects to the conceptualization of project management as an organizational capability. Working from the premise that project management is a socially constructed field of practice that has developed through the conversations and deliberate efforts of practitioners, principles of discourse analysis are used as a framework for studying the extent to which practice reflects the espoused theories of organizational project management capability development. The actuality of practice is represented by periodic reports over a five-year period by the "owners" of project management …

Generic Skills For Hospitality Management: A Comparative Study Of Management Expectations And Student Perceptions, Michael Raybould, Hugh Wilkins Jul 2006

Generic Skills For Hospitality Management: A Comparative Study Of Management Expectations And Student Perceptions, Michael Raybould, Hugh Wilkins

Michael Raybould

Tertiary providers of hospitality management degree programs must fulfil the needs of student, industry and academic stakeholder groups. The students attracted to this type of program tend to be motivated primarily by the anticipated vocational outcomes. As a result, hospitality management curriculum needs to meet both industry and student expectations by delivering the skill sets needed in the workplace and the institutional demands for academic rigour. This article reports on research that aimed to compare hospitality managers' expectations of graduate skills with student perceptions of the skills that hospitality managers valued. In contrast to previous research on this topic, this …

Aligning Capability With Strategy: Categorizing Projects To Do The Right Projects And To Do Them Right, Lynn Crawford, J Hobbs, John Turner

Lynn Crawford

Organizations achieve project success by both doing the right projects and doing projects right. This article examines the relationship between using project categorization systems and achieving project success. In doing so, it defines the purpose of project categorization systems and describes the challenges in developing such systems. It also reviews the field's literature on categorizing projects. It then outlines this study's six-step methodology to develop a holistic project categorization system, a process that involved a literature survey, focus group meetings, and Web-based questionnaire. It analyzes the findings from both the focus group and the questionnaire; it evaluates the three multi-dimensional …

Training Emotional Intelligence: Presenting The Results Of An Experimental Study, Jane Murray, Peter Jordan, Neal Ashkanasy

Jane Murray

This presentation outlines the results of an eighteen month study examining the effect of an emotions focused training intervention on the emotional intelligence of employees from a large public sector organisation. Utilising an experimental methodology, 280 staff attended a two-day program focused on training emotional intelligence skills and abilities. These interventions were created around Mayer and Salovey’s four-branch model of emotional intelligence (awareness, understanding, facilitation and management of emotions). The experimental group’s emotional intelligence was tested pre and post training using the Workgroup Emotional Intelligence Profile (WEIP). In addition, a control group from the same organisation also completed the same …
