A debate exists regarding the efficacy of training interventions in emotional intelligence. While some authors claim that emotional intelligence cannot be learned, others argue it can. Despite this ongoing debate, emotional intelligence training is being offered to organisations. These training packages range from simple interpersonal skills training to more emotions focused programs. In this paper, we report our preliminary findings from one study in an overall research project seeking to determine the extent to which training increases team performance and / or emotional intelligence. Australian organisations continue to offer relational training interventions designed to change employee behaviour within the workplace. However, the success of these programs is often determined through asking supervisors to report on individuals’ behavioural changes rather than obtaining proof of their effectiveness. The purpose of this research is to measure the success of training programs offered by a Queensland Public Sector organisation following Kirkpatrick’s (1977) model of providing proof of behavioural change after training. In particular, this research measures the emotional intelligence of individuals undertaking these training programs to determine whether emotional intelligence actually increased because of the training. Easing The Inferential Leap In Competency Modeling: The Effects Of Task-Related Information And Subject Matter Expertise, Filip Lievens, Juan I. Sanchez, Wilfred De Corte

Despite the rising popularity of the practice of competency modeling, research on competency modeling has lagged behind. This study begins to close this practice-science gap through 3 studies (1 lab study and 2 field studies), which employ generalizability analysis to shed light on (a) the quality of inferences made in competency modeling and (b) the effects of incorporating elements of traditional job analysis into competency modeling to raise the quality of competency inferences. Study 1 showed that competency modeling resulted in poor interrater reliability and poor between-job discriminant validity amongst inexperienced raters. Future Perspectives On Employee Selection: Key Directions For Future Research And Practice, Neil Anderson, Filip Lievens, Karen Van Dam, Ann Marie Ryan

A future-oriented perspective for selection and assessment research is presented. Four superordinate themes of critical import to the development of future research are identified: (i) bimodal prediction, (ii) multilevel fit, (iii) applicant reactions and decision making, and (iv) tensions between research and practice in employee selection. Under each theme we pose a number of outstanding questions for research. Implications for practice and the ongoing advancement of the sub-field of selection, traditionally one of the most robust core disciplines in international IWO psychology, are discussed.

A Social Exchange Model Of Subordinate's Trust In Supervisors, Wei Hua

This study demonstrates how the subordinate’s defensiveness predicts perception of managerial behaviors, which in turn leads to trust in supervisors. From a social information processing perspective, defensiveness, the affective reaction to uncertainty and vulnerability, serves as the frame subordinates use to decode and evaluate managerial behaviors. Trust in supervisors is anchored in this perception. A two-group analysis in Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) is used to test this model by a Chinese and a US sample

Confirmatory Factor Analysis And Invariance Of An Organizational Citizenship Behaviour Measure Across Samples In A Dutch-Speaking Context, Filip Lievens, Frederik Anseel

Although Organizational Citizenship Behaviour (OCB) has been studied extensively over the years in the US, the measurement of OCB has received relatively limited attention in other international contexts. This study investigates the dimensionality of a specific OCB measure in a Dutch-speaking context (Flemish part of Belgium). In addition, we examine the invariance of this measure across two different samples: supervisor ratings of 259 subordinates and peer ratings of 215 employees. Generally, we found clear support for the discriminant validity of five OCB factors but convergent validity was only established for three of the five factors. This research analyzed employee job satisfaction narratives on World Wide Web sites of companies named among Fortune magazine’s “100 Best Companies to Work for in America.” Fewer than one-third of WWW sites included narratives. Narratives were most likely to express job satisfaction in personal, emotional terms and least likely to identify job security, benefits, or compensation as important rewards of work. Narratives often appeared targeted toward new college graduates. Clichés were used excessively in Web sites and narratives.

Dual-earned husband and wives, the most common family style in the United States, attempt to maintain healthy relationships as they juggle work and family roles. This study examined dual-career husbands and wives on the measures of work satisfaction, parenting satisfaction, family/work roles conflict and marital conflict to determine if differences existed between the husbands and wives. The findings indicated that dual-earner husbands and wives in this sample reported remarkably similar scores on the measures of work satisfaction, parenting satisfaction, family/work roles conflict, and marital conflict. For the first time in history, estimates of the overweight people in the world rival estimates of those malnourished. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2002) ranked obesity among the top 10 risks to human health worldwide. In the early 1960s, nearly half of the Americans were overweight and 13% were obese. Today some 64% of U.S. adults are overweight and 30.5% are obese. Even more alarming, twice as many U.S. children are overweight than were twenty years ago, a 66% increase. The purpose of this study was to determine, using the Occupational Work Ethic Inventory (OWEI), if there were any significant differences in the work ethic of secondary high school students enrolled in vocational program of study, university program of study, and level of grade attended.

The primary purpose of this descriptive study was to study the effect of spirituality on job satisfaction in one child welfare agency in Knoxville, Tennessee. Social workers from Child and Family Tennessee (CFT) were the target population and all professional social workers were surveyed. A secondary purpose was to determine possible relationships between job satisfaction, spirituality, and the demographic variables of age, gender, time employed by the agency, marital status, and ethnicity.

This study also examined the relationships between various demographic variables (e.g., job title or position, company size, gender, and years of experience) to see if they were related to perceptions of importance with the various HR areas. Although the popularity of IT outsourcing has grown over the last two decades, approximately one third of outsourcing contracts are discontinued. This discontinuation of contracts has resulted in renegotiations with the original outsourcing vendor, switching to another vendor, and backsourcing, or the return of previously outsourced functions in-house.

IT outsourcing is expected to grow to a $160 billion industry in the United States alone by 2005. Much of what is known today concerning organizational human resource development efforts (those being employee training, education, and development activities) has steadily and favorably come from large firms. Conversely, very little is known about the extent of HRD activities in small firms, especially those with fewer than 300 employees.
