Profits In The Pie Of The Beholder, Daniel Corsten, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

In the early 1990s, grocery suppliers and retailers joined forces to streamline operations - an initiative called "efficient consumer response." Today, suppliers feel like they're not getting their fair share of the profits from ECR. But they stand to lose more if they give up on it, the authors say.

How To Handle The Threat Of Catastrophe, Carol M. Sanchez, Stephen R. Goldberg Jan 2003

How To Handle The Threat Of Catastrophe, Carol M. Sanchez, Stephen R. Goldberg

Peer Reviewed Articles

One of the principal jobs of chief executives is to minimize risk and vulnerability to catastrophic events. Analyzing risk has become more complex since September 11, 2001. In addition to terrorism, other catastrophes can change the course of life as we know it including cyber crime, biological attacks, and the spread of diseases such as SARS. Companies must realign corporate priorities and put the security issue at the forefront, as many companies have done since the 9/11 attacks. Risk management has dealt traditionally with two types of events: known risk and unknown risk. Known risks are events you know exist, …

Activity As A Unit Of Analysis For Knowledge Management Frameworks, Leoni Warne, Irena Ali, Helen Hasan Jan 2003

Activity As A Unit Of Analysis For Knowledge Management Frameworks, Leoni Warne, Irena Ali, Helen Hasan

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

The authors of this paper take the view that knowledge management is a set of practices for systematically adding value to the knowlege of individuals, which is generated and shaped through interaction with others. It is therefore appropriate that knowledge management research be conducted in the context of particular organisations, focusing on local activities. To that end two of the authors have conducted a four-year research program investigating the factors in organizations that enhance and enable the assimilation, generation, sharing and building of knowledge that transfonns an organization into a learning organization. Human activities in organisational contexts have been analysed …

Improving The Efficiency Of Sporting Venues Through Capacity Management - The Case Of The Sydney (Australia) Cricket Ground Trust, Paul Preda, Ted Watts Jan 2003

Improving The Efficiency Of Sporting Venues Through Capacity Management - The Case Of The Sydney (Australia) Cricket Ground Trust, Paul Preda, Ted Watts

Faculty of Business - Papers (Archive)

Capacity management seeks to improve organizational effectiveness through improved operational efficiency and reduced congestion. The article contends that there are major similarities between manufacturing organizations and sporting venues with respect to issues of capacity management. This article reports the findings of two capacity management studies undertaken at a major sporting venue in Sydney, Australia, and relates the findings to capacity management theory articulated in current capacity literature and exhibited in existing management practice. It is proposed that by understanding the well-developed techniques presented in the production capacity literature, venue managers may be able to identify pockets of idle capacity and …

The Politics Of Human Resource Management In Implementing Process Innovation, Michael Zanko, Richard Badham, Maren Schubert Jan 2003

The Politics Of Human Resource Management In Implementing Process Innovation, Michael Zanko, Richard Badham, Maren Schubert

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

This paper analyses a longitudinal case study of organizational and human resource management (HRM) dimensions in the implementation of an approach to product development (concurrent engineering (CE)) in a multinational firm engaged in defence electronics. Most aspects of managing product development in CE are linked to people management. Yet in this case, other than project team structure, prescriptive HRM dimensions of CE received little attention in the implementation process. This failure to address the 'formal' prescribed HRM issues is explained by a multilayer analysis of the play of power and political lobbying among 'stakeholders' over time: the HRM function, key …

A Framework For Case-Based Reasoning Integration On Knowledge Management Systems, Seung Hwan Kang, Sim K. Lau Jan 2003

A Framework For Case-Based Reasoning Integration On Knowledge Management Systems, Seung Hwan Kang, Sim K. Lau

Faculty of Commerce - Papers (Archive)

To support the sharing and reusing of well-defined knowledge among knowledge management systems, it is useful to use standardised formalisation. It is also common effort to difficulty of knowledge acquisition known as knowledge acquisition bottleneck. In this paper investigates the feasibility of using techniques in case-based reasoning of artificial intelligence for the knowledge acquisition phase in knowledge management systems. The need of an ontological approach of the semantic web for well-defined set of domain knowledge is proposed in order to avoid knowledge acquisition bottleneck. Our viewpoint of this approach is that the ontology-driven mechanism allows us to provide standardised structured …

Should Marketing Managers Be Concerned About Attitudes Towards Marketing And Consumerism In New Zealand: A Longitudinal View, Steven Lysonski, Srinivas Durvasula, John Watson Jan 2003

Should Marketing Managers Be Concerned About Attitudes Towards Marketing And Consumerism In New Zealand: A Longitudinal View, Steven Lysonski, Srinivas Durvasula, John Watson

Marketing Faculty Research and Publications

New Zealand has gone through a radical metamorphosis since free market economics were introduced in the mid-1980s. Marketing managers are particularly interested in the views of consumers about issues dealing with marketing activities. Negative views could signal consumer backlash against free market activities. This study examines the views of consumers from 1986 to 2001 on a range of issues dealing with marketing and consumerism. The results clearly show that consumers are less negative about marketing and consumerism issues since 1986. It seems likely that New Zealand has evolved in terms of the consumerism life cycle over the last 15 years. …

Where Have All The Flowers Gone?: A Modular Systems Perspective Of It Infrastructure Design And Productivity, Pratim Datta Jan 2003

Where Have All The Flowers Gone?: A Modular Systems Perspective Of It Infrastructure Design And Productivity, Pratim Datta

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Assessing value of IT infrastructure investments has been both difficult and ambiguous. This research develops and tests a conceptual framework to understand the productivity process. A lagged and recursive framework is used to trace the relationship between IT infrastructure investments, infrastructure design, and organizational productivity along with contingencies of IT management and the environment. A major contribution of this study is the use of the systems perspective to disaggregate the concepts of IT infrastructure and productivity into collectively exhaustive types. Findings reveal that IT investments do not significant affect productivity but do so when used to develop an IT infrastructure …

Recognizing Macroeconomic Fluctuations In Value Based Management, Lars Oxelheim, Clas Wihlborg Jan 2003

Recognizing Macroeconomic Fluctuations In Value Based Management, Lars Oxelheim, Clas Wihlborg

Business Faculty Articles and Research

Value Based Management (VBM) has become a common tool for evaluating corporate strategies and projects from the perspective of shareholder value maximization, and can be an important input for corporate compensation systems. But traditional VBM frameworks make no systematic effort to distinguish between changes in performance attributable to macroeconomic fluctuations beyond management's control and changes in performance that reflect the intrinsic competitive position of the firm.

The authors have developed an approach for “filtering out” the impact of macroeconomic fluctuations on cash flows for purposes of performance evaluation. Such fluctuations are captured by changes in exchange rates, interest rates, and …

Exploring The Antecedents Of Successful E-Business Implementations Through Erp : A Longitudinal Study Of Sap-Based Organisations 1999-2003, Colin Ash

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This research was carried out between 1999 and 2003 on the use of e-business applications in ERP-based organisations. A composite research method based on structured case studies was developed for this study. It combined the application of case methods by Carroll et al. (1998], Klein and Myer (1998), and Eisenhardt (1989). This was used to provide a focused, yet flexible structure, as a dynamic approach to case study interpretive research. The research method used three distinct models at three progressive stages of the study, to provide a multi-faceted view of each case. This composite case-based method was developed to maintain …
