The Role Of Commitment In Relationship Marketing In Consumer Services: An Airline Perspective, Ceara Cooper
The Role Of Commitment In Relationship Marketing In Consumer Services: An Airline Perspective, Ceara Cooper
Masters
This study proposes a relationship marketing model, which identifies the antecedents of commitment in the context of consumer services. The literature review initially considers relationship marketing (RM) and the concept of commitment from the context of the marketing and social psychology literature. Commitment is a key element of RM. If parties to a relationship are not committed, the relationship risks dissolution. In this study, commitment is conceptualised as having two distinct dimension i.e. affective and calculative commitment. Affective commitment represents a positive motivation for relationship continuance, whereas calculative commitment represents a negative motivation. Many studies consider commitment to be a …

Research Into Evaporative Cooling Of Buildings In Maritime Climates, Ben Costelloe, Donal Finn
Reports
Concern with environmental emissions has focused attention on traditional forms of energy use in buildings, with a view to reducing and making more rational use of energy consumption. One area of concern is the traditional, refrigeration based, commercial air conditioning system, which has high levels of electrical power consumption in fans and refrigeration compressors. There is also concern among building owners and design teams, supported by the PROBE series of post occupancy studies, conducted by the CIBSE, that many buildings, with traditional forms of air conditioning, under perform in terms of occupant satisfaction, ease of operation and control, maintenance costs …

The Role Of Academic/Industry Partnerships In The Development Of Supply Chain Managers, Edward Sweeney

The need for improvement in the logistics and supply chain management capability of companies in Ireland is becoming increasingly recognised. One of the main bottlenecks currently is the shortage of supply chain management professionals. Education and training has a fundamental role to play if the supply of suitably qualified human resource is to be addressed in a meaningful way. Recent research indicates that demand for people with the right knowledge and skills greatly exceed supply. There are numerous techniques and technologies which can facilitate improvement in a company’s supply chain capability. However, experience has shown that these tools alone can …

In 1998, the Scottish Tourist Board sought to develop a ‘real time’ database covering all tourism products and services throughout Scotland through visitscotland.com. Since then over £3m has been invested in this project with some 15,000 businesses and 17,500 products covering the whole spectrum of tourism business now searchable through the Web. The claim has been that there would be an increase in business being generated, initially with bookings through the more traditional channels such as telephone, fax, mail as well as e-mail and there has also been the anticipation that the official national tourist board website would generate significant …

Julian de Spainn, President of the Union of Students in Ireland looked around The Hub, a student bar in the Dublin City University campus. He was exhausted. So were the twenty or so people around him. Most of those present were fellow officers in USI. Earlier that day, Julian had witnessed a unique event in Irish student history. It was an event of which he was justifiably proud.

Community Tourism Groups: Development For Sustainability, Ann Conway
Community Tourism Groups: Development For Sustainability, Ann Conway
Books / Book chapters
Environmental policy in Ireland draws on the principles and priorities set out in the National Sustainable Development Strategy, which was endorsed by Government and published in 1997. It recognises that future development in tourism can be sustainable only if the natural assets upon which they depend are protected. Sustainable tourism aims to meet the needs and aspirations of the host area and its people, holiday makers and operators alike in a way which respects them all and those who will follow on. There are many different government departments and national, regional and local agencies involved directly and indirectly in the …
Moving Beyond Product Innovation In Tourism: Benefits And Challenges, Mary O'Rawe
Moving Beyond Product Innovation In Tourism: Benefits And Challenges, Mary O'Rawe
Books / Book chapters
Many difficulties still exist in translating innovation theories into action in the tourism industry. A substantial literature base is now in place addressing innovation typologies and methodologies and assessing organisational structures, cultures and sizes. Despite this, transferring leading-edge research on organisational innovation and creativity into pragmatic strategies for tourism enterprises has not been fully successful. The most cited and obvious form of innovation is product innovation. It is on this basis that the success of organisations is often judged. In tourism, this criterion for measuring innovativeness is flawed. It encourages companies to spend heavily on visible product changes, often at …

Multiple And Symbol Operators: The Battle For Market Leadership In The Irish Grocery Market, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox
Multiple And Symbol Operators: The Battle For Market Leadership In The Irish Grocery Market, Edmund O'Callaghan, Mary Wilcox
Case Studies
The Irish grocery retailing market, one of the most competitive in Europe, has undergone a metamorphosis in recent years. The demise of many small grocers, an increased concentration of multiples and the galvanization of the independent sector through symbol group participation has intensified competitive rivalry. The two largest multiples ie. Tesco Ireland and Dunnes Stores continually vie for number one position nationally. In recent years, Musgrave have galvanised the independent sector and are now in a position to challenge the top multiples for the prized pole position in the market. Recent results show that sales were up 15% vear-on-year, on …
Discovering Diversity In Marketing Practice, John Murray, Aidan O'Driscoll, Ann Torres
Discovering Diversity In Marketing Practice, John Murray, Aidan O'Driscoll, Ann Torres
Articles
Marketing practice varies among firms. However, the prescriptive literature emphasises a universal view of practice, a “one-size-fits-all” view. This paper addresses the issue of explaining diversity in competitive space and over time. Diversity in competitive space reflects the existence of different routes to high performance. Diversity over time reflects some combination of change in the individual firm and change in a population of firms. In the former case, diversity is shaped by organisational change; in the latter by the disbandment and founding of firms in the population. Miles and Snow’s typology is taken as a main point of departure in …
Integrating The Activities Required To Recruit And Retain Profitable Customers In Contemporary Retail Banking, Susan Walsh
Integrating The Activities Required To Recruit And Retain Profitable Customers In Contemporary Retail Banking, Susan Walsh
Articles
Today’s high street retail bank faces a major challenge in integrating the marketing activities required both to recruit new customers and to retain existing profitable ones. The challenge involves a judicious mix of “transaction marketing” – mainly aimed at winning new clients – and of “relationship marketing”- largely aimed at retaining present ones. Evidence from a detailed qualitative study of marketing practice in a UK high street bank, a subsidiary of an Irish headquartered bank, demonstrates just how problematic achieving this balance can be. The date indicates that this bank underinvested in a number of activities that are of primary …
The Future Of The Forestry Sector In Ireland, Siobhan Mccarthy
The Future Of The Forestry Sector In Ireland, Siobhan Mccarthy
Articles
The most recent government strategy statement on forestry sets a planting target of 20,000 hectares annually for the Republic of Ireland, but in recent years this target has not been met. Public afforestation is now limited to the management and replacement of existing forests, so private afforestation must increase if this target is to be achieved. This article quantifies the relative importance of competing forestry and agricultural policy incentives in explaining trends in private afforestation. Several policy reforms to encourage forestry planting are proposed, including greater integration of forestry with the Rural Environment Protection Scheme and increasing the upfront payments …
The Established And Potential Mediating Variables In The Child's Understanding Of Advertising Intent: Towards A Research Agenda, Margaret-Anne Lawlor, Andrea Prothero
The Established And Potential Mediating Variables In The Child's Understanding Of Advertising Intent: Towards A Research Agenda, Margaret-Anne Lawlor, Andrea Prothero
Articles
This paper aims to explore in detail the issue of advertising intent, with particular reference to the child. The literature review examines the importance of age, and cognitive and social development in this field, and considers whether or not children can distinguish between television programming and advertising. What the literature review illustrates is that research studies thus far have conflicting viewpoints on these areas. Within the research to date, there are also a number of important issues which do not seem to be addressed. Most notably, there is little research which considers the impact of advertising upon children, from the …

The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan
The Sustainability Of Sustainable Consumption, Paddy Dolan
Articles
This article examines the limitations of the concept of sustainable consumption in terms of the inadequate attention given to the social, cultural and historical contextualization of consumption. I argue that Macromarketing should adopt modes of inquiry that more fully engage with this contextualization. The implicit assumptions of ‘sustainable consumption’ center on the rational individual and his or her needs and wants, and neglect the significance of consumption practices as embodying the relations between individuals. Acts of consumption are not in opposition to, and prior to, macro structures and processes, they are macro processes at work. Consumer practices are cultural and …

The year 2001 was a momentous one for most companies in the IT sector with dramatic drops in both profit and market sentiment. Few businesses in the sector were immune to the upheaval. Fortunes had been lost, at least on paper, and many dot.com businesses had folded. While telecoms businesses had been the hardest hit among established concerns, the gloom was widespread.
