The Soul Of The Firm (Mechanicsburg, Pa), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In this speech delivered at Messiah College (Mechanicsburg, PA), Pollard elucidates his theory concerning the "soul of the firm," which is most easily defined as the people who work for the organization. In light of this, he defines corporate leadership as essentially a form of service, a means by which the manager serves the greater good of the individuals who make up the larger organization.

The Dilemma For American Business Regarding Health Care Reform, Joseph A. Cernik May 1996

The Dilemma For American Business Regarding Health Care Reform, Joseph A. Cernik

Theses

Businesses of all sizes will have to work together to adequately address controlling their health care costs. At the present time, large corporations have options available to them to control their health care costs, but these options will not be sufficient in the long-term. Since smaller businesses are increasingly declining to provide health insurance to their employees, the result is the growth of the working uninsured who will become a problem that cannot easily be contained and will affect the ability of large corporations to address their health care costs. The dilemma that American business faces is the need to …

The Soul Of The Firm (Nairobi, Kenya), C. William Pollard Mar 1996

The Soul Of The Firm (Nairobi, Kenya), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In this speech at the Daystar Symposium (Nairobi, Kenya), Pollard notes that whereas the "theory of the firm" is often defined by the objective goal of maximizing profit, the "soul of the firm" should be considered the people the organization employs. Corporate success, therefore, requires that profit be considered alongside the development of character.

Who Are You And What Do You Want? (Nairobi, Kenya), C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

The Soul Of The Firm As It Moves To The 21st Century, C. William Pollard Mar 1996

The Soul Of The Firm As It Moves To The 21st Century, C. William Pollard

C. William Pollard Papers

In an address delivered at the 50th Annual Indiana University Business Conference (Indianapolis, IN), Pollard contends that the "soul" of any corporate firm is its people. In light of this, he goes on to argue that corporate success depends upon managers who commit themselves to a vision of leadership defined by service to both employees and customers.

Business And Education: A Partnership Worth Investment, Keith W. Harkins

Theses

This thesis will focus on the potential benefits of a collaboration between business and education in an effort to prepare today's youth for entry into the workforce.

The number of large companies that are becoming involved with education is steadily increasing. Many business leaders have come to realize that business has the ability to provide human and material resources that would enable schools to significantly improve the education students receive.

Student internships may provide a method for both business and education to benefit from such partnerships.

The purpose of the present study is to investigate research regarding partnerships between business …

Approaches To Decision Making, Richard J. Mckenna Jan 1996

Approaches To Decision Making, Richard J. Mckenna

Research outputs pre 2011

This book is designed as a brief introduction to the understanding of decision making in work settings. It is designed for use in graduate courses and should be supported by a wide range of additional reading materials and practical exercises. The approach is multi-disciplinary and pluralistic: there are many perspectives from which decision making may be viewed. Similarly, there are many differences in decision making between individuals and between contexts.

The book is intended to contribute to a raised awareness of the many issues and high complexity attaching to important decisions. It may or may not help the reader to …

The Relationship Between Announced Layoffs And Financial Performance, Carol E, Goldman Jan 1996

The Relationship Between Announced Layoffs And Financial Performance, Carol E, Goldman

Theses

This thesis focuses on the impact of downsizing on financial performance. Downsizing has become a catchall term for plant closures, eliminating entire layers of management, and even subcontracting large amounts of a firm's operations. Although many American firms are downsizing they often do hot consider what they are trying to achieve by cutting jobs or closing plants. Generally, U.S. companies are eliminating - jobs in their organizations in an attempt to cut costs believing that to do so will increase profitability and result in more efficient organizations. It is naturally assumed that any strategic change in a corporation, such as …
