Pete Roselle, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Some called him the Pope of the National Football League. Others saw him as a minor deity of the mid-twentieth century's religious devotion to sport. Whatever the perspective, it is clear that Alvin "Pete" Rozelle is among the most significant figures in the history of Sport in America and the world in the Twentieth Century.

Thinking Styles And Financial Characteristics Of Selected Canadian Farm Managers, Wayne W. Howard, George L. Brinkman, Remy Lambert

Agribusiness

The thinking styles of selected Canadian farm managers are identified using the life styles inventory (LSI). The farmers'LSI scores are compared with those of a base sample of nonfarmers, and correlations between the farmers'LSI scores and financial indicators are examined. Results indicate that farmers do thinking differently than nonfarmers and that there are significant correlations between thinking styles and financial measures.

Jerry Reinsdorf's Smoking Gun And Baseball Labor Settlement, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

They called him The Old Roman. In 1919 Charles Comiskey, owner of the Chicago White Sox so angered his players with low salaries and his cheapskate ways that they turned on him and fixed the World Series. In 1996 White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf so angered his fellow owners by his high salaries and wild spending that they turned on him, reversed their vote of the previous three weeks, and approved the new baseball collective bargaining agreement. Maybe they should call Reinsdorf, the New Roman, or Roman Nouveau.

Cultural Value Orientations As An Antecedent To The Formation Of International Interfirm Relationships: The Developmentof Cultural Value Dimensions In A Business Context, Susan Forquer Gupta Dec 1996

Cultural Value Orientations As An Antecedent To The Formation Of International Interfirm Relationships: The Developmentof Cultural Value Dimensions In A Business Context, Susan Forquer Gupta

Doctoral Dissertations

With the importance of international interfirm relationships increasing, it becomes critical to understand the antecedents and consequences of relationship formation. Difficulty in relationships occur when firms with differing cultural value orientations attempt to engage in exchange. Culture affects the international firm in several ways: 1) difficulty in establishing a single organizational culture when a firm is comprised of multi-national employees; 2) difficulty in serving the market when cultural differences exist in the consumer; and 3) difficulty in establishing interfirm relationships across cultural boundaries. Individually, these problems are difficult to resolve, combined they can lead to failure. The first two have …

Smallholder Dairying Under Transactions Costs In East Africa, Steven Staal, Christopher L. Delgado, Charles F. Nicholson Dec 1996

Smallholder Dairying Under Transactions Costs In East Africa, Steven Staal, Christopher L. Delgado, Charles F. Nicholson

Agribusiness

It is argued that dairying is vital to future viability of many small farms in East Africa and that high transactions costs for dairy production and marketing limit participation by asset-and information-poor smallholders. Case studies from Kenya and Ethiopia illustrate the role of dairy cooperatives in reducing transactions costs. Analysis of the determinants of producer prices received by a sample of dairy producers near Addis Ababa suggests that different levels of access to infrastructure, assets, and information explain why different households contemporaneously accept widely different producer prices for fluid milk.

Using Critical And Creative Thinking Skills To Enhance Integrity In Business Organizations, Madeline B. Conley Dec 1996

Using Critical And Creative Thinking Skills To Enhance Integrity In Business Organizations, Madeline B. Conley

Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection

In this thesis I explore some of the ways in which critical thinking skills can be used to facilitate the development of integrity in business organizations. The vehicle I have developed to bring these thinking skills to organizations is a one-day intensive workshop with a follow-up half-day evaluation session. In chapter one, I define integrity and compare it to Stephen Carter's definition. I also analyze five specific critical thinking skills and relate them to two actual cases: Dow Corning and fictitiously named, First National Bank. In the Dow Corning case, I argue that management might have produced a less destructive …

The Influence Of Education On Tax Compliance, Trina N. Ruth

Electronic Dissertations and Theses

This thesis will explore the effect that education of income tax laws would have on the increase of taxpayer compliance. It will attempt to show that with proper education and information about their income tax reporting an increase in compliance would be the result. The research that will be used for data and statistical purposes will be in the form of a survey. The survey targets Beauty Salons, Barber Shops, and Beauty Schools. This survey will serve as the medium to research the notion of how much income taxpayers actually report. Other social and economic factors such as age, sex, …

Sow Preference For Types Of Flooring In Farrowing Crates, P. A. Phillips, D. Fraser, B. K. Thompson

Housing and Confinement of Farm Animals Collection

A preference-testing apparatus was used to provide sows with continuous access to three identical farrowing crates, each with a different type of flooring. The crates radiated from a central hub area sufficiently large for sows to enter or leave any crate freely. In exp. 1, nine sows from a concrete-floored gestation room were offered crates over concrete, plastic-coated rod, and galvanized metal rod. In exp. 2, sows were pre-exposed for a period of 1 wk to one of the three floors before entry into the preference testing apparatus. Video recording was used to determine sow position from 3 d before …

The Development Of Accounting And Financial Reporting: A Global Perspective Is Universal Acceptance Of International Accounting Standards Imminent?, Deborah Sales

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Accounting methodologies have been centuries in the making. As societies matured fiscally, so did corresponding accounting techniques. Since societies evolved independently, there is now a variety of extant reporting practices. The technological advances of the latter part of the twentieth century have taken trade to a new level. Competition for products and capital has increased exponentially. Investors depend upon the information recorded in financial reports to determine where they will invest their resources. The information derived from financial reports may be misunderstood when the reporting entity is from another country, however. This lack of "harmony" is one of the latest …

Measuring The Technological Leadership Of International Joint Ventures In A Transforming Economy, Kong Wing, Clement Chow, Ka Yiu, Michael Fung Dec 1996

Measuring The Technological Leadership Of International Joint Ventures In A Transforming Economy, Kong Wing, Clement Chow, Ka Yiu, Michael Fung

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This paper introduces technical efficiency as an objective criterion for measuring the performance of international joint ventures in China. We compute the estimates of time-invariant and time-varying technical efficiency in four major manufacturing industries in Shanghai. We show that international joint ventures are in general more technically efficient than domestic firms in the industries of textile, machinery and equipment, and electronics and telecommunications equipment are widening in our sample period although the industrial reforms and active technology policies have improved the productivity of domestic firms. However, in the clothing industry, the technical efficiency of domestic firms, especially state-owned firms, is …

The Motives Of Hong Kong-Japanese International Joint Ventures, Mei Ling, May Wong

Hong Kong Institute of Business Studies Working Paper Series

This paper attempts to study Hong Kong-Japanese joint ventures from the perspectives of firm-specific advantages provided by both partners. The analysis focuses on the local partner's perspective of establishing international joint ventures (IJVs) with a Japanese multinational retailer. First, the background of the local partner, especially the company’s organizational restructuring immediately before the formation of the IJVs is examined. Second, the development and consolidation of the IJVs between the two partners by a series of IJV activities in Hong Kong, Asia, and China is described. Third, the motives behind both partners to establish the IJVs are examined. Finally, an evaluation …
