Selective Tooth Clipping In The Management Of Low-Birth-Weight Piglets, S. Robert, B. K. Thompson, David Fraser Sep 1995

Selective Tooth Clipping In The Management Of Low-Birth-Weight Piglets, S. Robert, B. K. Thompson, David Fraser

Farm Animal Husbandry Collection

A study was designed to test the potential benefits of selective tooth clipping (the practice of leaving the eye teeth intact in the smallest piglets of a litter to make them more competitive) under commercial conditions. A total of 346 litters were assigned to either the control treatment where all piglets had their teeth clipped, or the experimental treatment where one or more piglets of low birth weight had their teeth left intact. Piglets were weighed within 24 h of birth and at 7, 21 and 56 d. In litters of 12-14 animals, but not in smaller litters, the lower-birth-weight …

Ontario Beef Producers'attitudes About Artificial Insemination, Wayne H. Howard, John Cranfield

Agribusiness

Characteristics and attitudes of Ontario beef producers who use artificial insemination and those who use natural breeding are compared. Natural breeders are characterized as larger as well as more commercial and profit oriented. Time, convenience and problems with heat detection are the main problems natural breeders associate with artificial insemination.

The New Ethic For Animals And The Dairy Industry, Bernard Rollin Apr 1995

The New Ethic For Animals And The Dairy Industry, Bernard Rollin

Morality and Ethics of Industrial Farming Collection

There is an unfortunate tendency on the part of those who use animals to dismiss the new social concern with animal treatment as the irrational ravings of tofu-eating, ginseng-guzzling, urban wimps and bunny-hugging extremists.“Animal welfare is what we already do; animal rights if what they want us to do,” one animal scientist said, neatly summarizing the situation. However, what is of paramount importance is that “they” are not just a band of radicals; the new ethic for animals has taken root among society in general. As one cowboy in Kingsville, Texas put it to me:“Hell, Doc, if it were just …

Transient Gear Shellfish Aquaculture, Michael A. Rice, Robert B. Rheault Jr Feb 1995

Transient Gear Shellfish Aquaculture, Michael A. Rice, Robert B. Rheault Jr

Michael A Rice

Transient-gear aquaculture is a method of growing shellfish that is designed to minimize multiple-use conflicts in common use public trust waters, and avoiding the need for a conventional fixed aquaculture lease site. A pro-forma economic model of an oyster farm using transient gear in Rhode Island's Narragansett Bay is provided, and the advantages and disadvantages of transient gear aquaculture are discussed.

Valuation Of Transferable Delivery Rights For Marketing Cooperatives, Charles V. Moore, Jay E. Noel Jan 1995

Valuation Of Transferable Delivery Rights For Marketing Cooperatives, Charles V. Moore, Jay E. Noel

Agribusiness

Delivery rights to a cooperative's marketing pool can take on a value independent of the members' equity share under certain conditions. Based on anecdotal information, transferable delivery rights become valuable when the pool is fixed in size (closed), members are protected from exploitation of quasi economic rents, and have an assured "home" for their production. The greater the potential buyers' aversion to risk, the higher the value of the delivery right. The right has additional value if the cooperative generates a premium per unit return due to product differentiation and market power. Cooperatives competing with investor-owned firms in less than …

Obligations And Penalties Under Lemon Laws: Automobiles Versus Tractors, Terence J. Centner, Michael E. Wetzstein Jan 1995

Obligations And Penalties Under Lemon Laws: Automobiles Versus Tractors, Terence J. Centner, Michael E. Wetzstein

Department of Agricultural Economics: Faculty Publications

Distinctive new provisions of tractor lemon laws which create obligations and provide penalties for defective self-propelled agricultural equipment are contrasted with provisions of automobile lemon laws. Lemon-law obligations involve both producers' guarantees to provide consumers with a serviceable vehicle and producers' promises to remedy defects. Due to fewer manufacturer obligations under the tractor lemon laws as opposed to automobile lemon laws, tractors may be expected to have more defects than automobiles. Yet the tractor lemon laws contain fewer penalties in the form of restitution remedies. The inconsistences of these obligations and penalties suggest tractor laws may be inefficient.

Food Into Asia, Geraldine Pasqual, Richard Taylor Jan 1995

Food Into Asia, Geraldine Pasqual, Richard Taylor

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Competing for a share of Asia's food market may require playing by a new set of rules. New packaging and labelling formays will need careful and long-term planning and products must match the customer's palate and quality specifications.

Geraldine Pasqual and Richard Taylor explain some of the culturally significant rules of the game and why marketing success greatly depends on understanding what the customer wants and supplying it.

Do Animal Protection Laws Dupe The Public?, Henry Spira Jan 1995

Do Animal Protection Laws Dupe The Public?, Henry Spira

Farm Animal Campaign

As outlined by Wolfson, laws give the perception of protecting farm animals but, in reality, provide little or no protection. Federal law fails to provide any protection to farm animals on the farm. Moreover, while many state cruelty laws still cover farm animals in theory, they are rarely if ever applied. And most disconcerting is the trend of farm animals being increasingly excluded from the reach of state cruelty laws.
