The Tampa Bay Buccaneers And The "Curse Of Doug Williams", Richard C. Crepeau Dec 1992

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers And The "Curse Of Doug Williams", Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

With the end of the National Football League's regular season, we have come to the end of another season of despair for the Tampa Bay Bucs. New levels of futility were achieved as the Bucs turned in their tenth consecutive season in which they have lost at least ten games. And the Bucs don't just lose, they lose in new and creative ways. This is a team of legendary incompetence, whose poor performance over a sustained period of time is earning them a special place in the history of the NFL.

The Ten Days Of Christmas: Tv Sports, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The Twelve Days of Christmas we don't have, but we do have ten days of Christmas from December 25 through January 3 during which television offers a mind-boggling array of football, basketball(professional and college), and hockey. Sports television in the late 20th century may have spawned an entirely new concept of the days of Christmas.

Sports Books For Christmas, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

With but a week until Christmas the time seems right for some last minute gift suggestions for the sportsmen and sportswomen on your Christmas list. As usual baseball books dominate the list from this past year, as baseball remains the most written about sport in America.

Shaq: The Latest Impact Player, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

They are called impact players. The kind of player who can come into a league and make an immediate impact on a team, and even on a league. They are few and far between. The Orlando Magic has one. At 7'1" and around 300 pounds he is what Al McGuire termed an aircraft carrier, and Dick Vitale calls a space eater. Either description will do. He is Shaquille O'Neal. The Shaq.

Red Barber, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 1992

Red Barber, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Two weeks ago "Red" Barber died in Tallahassee. Since 1981 Barber has been a familiar voice on National Public Radio's Morning Edition. Each Friday morning at 7:35 "Red" sitting in his home in Tallahassee had a warm and interesting conversation with Bob Edwards, the Colonel. He would talk about the sports of the week, his recollections of sports past, and very often the state of his garden and the foliage of Tallahassee.

Toronto: The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Sunday morning Radio Canada was playing "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" while the Blue Jay announcers could be heard calling the last play of the World Series. It has been an historic World Series: The first outside the United States and the first won by a team based in Canada. And Pat "North of the" Borders was named MVP. Catchers in fact figured heavily in the course of this series.

Baseball Playoffs: Atlanta And Toronto Move On, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Most of Wednesday it looked as though it would be the year of the bridesmaids in the World Series. But not quite. Francisco Cabrerra and Jose Lind saw to that. Lind's error extended the ninth inning, and Cabrerra's single ended it. Facing certain defeat the Atlanta Braves scored three runs to win 3-2 and the Pirates remain bridesmaids for the third consecutive year. Earlier in the day Toronto got a major monkey off its back by eliminating the Oakland A's.
