Hollywood Entertainment Industry Attraction/Retention Action Plan, Harrison Price Company Dec 1991

Hollywood Entertainment Industry Attraction/Retention Action Plan, Harrison Price Company

Harrison "Buzz" Price Papers

The Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA} of the City of Los Angeles is engaged in a 30 year effort to revitalize Hollywood. A key to this effort is the maintenance of the economic health of the entertainment industry businesses which have historically been the backbone of the community's economy. The CRA is concerned that continued out migration of entertainment industry businesses to surrounding areas such as Burbank, Miracle Mile, West Hollywood and West Los Angeles will negatively affect the long term health of Hollywood's resident and commercial base. Accordingly, the agency elected to prepare an Action Plan aimed at ...

Book Review: Gunnar Myrdal And America's Conscience: Social Engineering And Racial Liberalism, 1938-1987. By Walter A. Jackson, Ann Mari May Dec 1991

Book Review: Gunnar Myrdal And America's Conscience: Social Engineering And Racial Liberalism, 1938-1987. By Walter A. Jackson, Ann Mari May

College of Business Faculty Publications

Walter A. Jackson's Gunnar Myrdal and America's Conscience is more than a biographical sketch of a unique political economist. It is a fine piece of intellectual history that institutionalists, in particular, will appreciate. Jackson gracefully examines the development of Myrdal's thought as a political economist and its influence on his study of race relations, paying mindful attention to the historical context and personal influences shaping Myrdal's work. As a result of Jackson's research, we understand more fully not only the influence of Myrdal's approach as a political economist on his study of race relations ...

Urbanization And Food Imports In Sub-Saharan Africa, James Tabi, Wayne H. Howard, Truman Phillips

Agribusiness

The Granger statistical test of causality was used to examine the relationship between total food imports and urbanization and between food aid and urbanization. Urbanization appears to have caused total food imports to increase in 13 of the 24 countries. Food imports appear to be a cause of urbanization in three countries. Food aid, however, apparently was a cause of urbanization in 16 of the 24 countries used in the analysis.

Racial Discrimination In Business Transactions, Robert E. Suggs Dec 1991

Racial Discrimination In Business Transactions, Robert E. Suggs

Faculty Scholarship

When the Supreme Court invalidated a municipal minority business set-aside in City of Richmond v. J.A. Croson Co., it failed to recognize the special circumstances confronting the minority entrepreneur. Contrary to the Court’s own erroneous assertion that “[s]tates and their local subdivisions have many legislative weapons at their disposal both to punish and prevent present [business] discrimination ….” – they do not. Nor can they create effective antidiscrimination remedies as a practical matter. As a result that decision leaves minority business owners vulnerable to discrimination from other business firms but without a remedy. Part I identifies the glaring failure ...

A Preliminary Analysis Of Shifting State Tax Policy In Iowa To Minimize Federal Income Tax Liability Of Iowa Taxpayers, Mark A. Edelman Dr. Dec 1991

A Preliminary Analysis Of Shifting State Tax Policy In Iowa To Minimize Federal Income Tax Liability Of Iowa Taxpayers, Mark A. Edelman Dr.

Economic Staff Paper Series

Because of recent state budget deficit concerns, a study to examine innovative ways of reducing the state budget deficit by shifting state tax mix to minimize Federal Income Tax liability of Iowans was conceived on November 27, 1991. On the surface this concept appeared to have significant merit. In fact, several colleagues, policy analysts, economists, lawyers and interest group representatives, after hearing the concept indicated strong encouragement that the concept should be studied further.

A Model To Estimate State Budget Reduction Differential Impacts On Iowa Local Governments, Dave Swenson Dec 1991

A Model To Estimate State Budget Reduction Differential Impacts On Iowa Local Governments, Dave Swenson

Economic Staff Paper Series

This model profiles the impacts of state budget reductions applying to general shared and categorical state assistance to local governments in Iowa. The model is designed to estimate aggregate county impacts per capita and on property taxes based on the sums of individual schools', cities', and counties' budgeted property tax and total state assistance revenues for fiscal 1991. Fiscal 1991 local government budget information is the latest available and indicates the expected fiscal relationship of local and state governments prior to the budget deficit difficulties that emerged in late fiscal 1991. The model does not predict local fiscal impacts for ...

Iowa's Ethanol And Corn Milling Industries: Economic And Employment Impacts, Daniel M. Otto, Mark Imerman, Lee Kolmer

Economic Staff Paper Series

This paper studies the ethanol production industry in Iowa and its linkages to the overall corn milling industry in the state. The work was instigated by questions concerning the effects of tax abatements on ethanol blended fuels. While the direct incidence of tax abatement changes is not analyzed, the employment, production, and income effects of incremental changes in corn milling activity that result from changes in ethanol demand are investigated.

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Two Individual Monetary Incentive Systems On Work Productivity: Piece-Work Pay Versus Base Pay Plus Incentives, Kirk L. Gillette Dec 1991

A Comparison Of The Effects Of Two Individual Monetary Incentive Systems On Work Productivity: Piece-Work Pay Versus Base Pay Plus Incentives, Kirk L. Gillette

Master's Theses

This study compared the effectiveness of a piece-rate pay system in which 100% of the subject's pay was incentive-based with a base pay plus incentive system in which approximately 30% of the subject's pay was incentive-based. Two experiments were conducted. In each experiment, six subjects were exposed to both pay systems using a within-subject reversal design. Subjects participated in 6 to 9 three-hour sessions (Experiment 1) or 9 to 14 four-hour sessions (Experiment 2). Simulated bank checks with differing cash values were presented on a computer screen, and subjects entered the cash values using the computer keyboard. The ...

Exchange Rate And Income Effects On South Korean Exports: The Us Case, Heather M. O'Neill, William Ross Dec 1991

Exchange Rate And Income Effects On South Korean Exports: The Us Case, Heather M. O'Neill, William Ross

Business and Economics Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes econometrically the effects of direct and cross exchange rates as well as US income and Korean supply developments on the volume of Korean exports to the US. The results suggest that US demand has been the most important factor in the growth of Korean exports to the US in recent years. However, direct exchange rate effects are also important; the estimates suggest that for 1989-90, a yearly 10% real appreciation of the won against the dollar would have lowered export volume by about 10% per year relative to a baseline case. Cross exchange rate effects run counter ...

The Effects Of Perceived Consequences On Ethical Decisions, Eldean Gwen Cornish Nov 1991

The Effects Of Perceived Consequences On Ethical Decisions, Eldean Gwen Cornish

Honors Theses

Increasing public awareness of ethics in business, or a lack thereof, has inspired an abundance of study, research and a variety of theories regarding ethics and has encouraged many firms and associations to establish corporate and professional codes of ethics. This thesis begins with a literature review surrounding the definition of ethics and ethical decision-making behavior. The Theory of Reasoned Action model designed by Fishbein and Ajzen (1975) proposed a linkage of external variables and an individual's behavioral intention (Randall, 1989), the theory being that change is ultimately a result of changes in beliefs. Tests to predict behavior suffer ...

"Magic" Johnson And Hiv, Richard C. Crepeau Nov 1991

"Magic" Johnson And Hiv, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

Just over a week ago rumors swept through the media that Ervin "Magic" Johnson was about to retire from professional basketball because he had AIDS. A few hours later Johnson appeared at a press conference to confirm the rumor of his retirement. He said he did not have AIDS, but rather he had tested positive for the HIV virus, a precursor to AIDS. It is a virtual certainty that Johnson will contract AIDS within the next decade. Because he had tested HIV positive, it was determined that medically it would be wise for him to retire from basketball.

Job Satisfaction And Subjective Well-Being As Determinants Of Job Adaptation, Timothy A. Judge, Charles Hulin Nov 1991

Job Satisfaction And Subjective Well-Being As Determinants Of Job Adaptation, Timothy A. Judge, Charles Hulin

CAHRS Working Paper Series

An important controversy in the literature on employee withdrawal/adaptation concerns whether job satisfaction predicts behaviors that are manifestations of this construct. Although the area has not lacked for empirical research, Hulin (1991) has argued that several unresolved issues have limited the generalizations we can make about the role of job satisfaction in influencing isolated work behaviors. Hulin (1991) hypothesized that there is a general construct underlying many adaptive behaviors, including job withdrawal. When this general construct is assessed through combination of individual behaviors, the ability of constructs such as job satisfaction to influence job adaptation was hypothesized to increase ...
