Integrating Multiple Criteria Decision-Making Models Into The Decision Support System Framework For Marketing Decisions, Rajshekhar G. Javalgi, Hemant K. Jain
Marketing
The paper focuses on integrating the multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) models within the decision support system (DSS) framework to encourage greater use of these models. A DSS framework and the criteria used for the choice of a model is discussed. Based on these criteria MCDM models generally used in the marketing field are evaluated. The possibility of using a mixture of MCDM models within the DSS framework is also explored. Following this, the role of the MCDM models in DSS is delineated. It is argued that, within the problem-solving process, the confluence of MCDM models and DSS plays a …

Competition among firms for market share and differential advantage is at an all-time high [3]. Moreover, investment in research and development (R&D) is seen as a major strategy in attaining and maintaining any competitive edge [4]. Little is known, however, about how experiencing poor performance in R&D endeavors affects managers' perceptions of future opportunities for success in his or her company. Do managers believe that success breeds success, while poor performance is an indication of continued problems in the future? Or do managers believe that poor past performance is unrelated to future performance? Additionally, are some individuals prone to experience …

Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan
Cigarette Advertising To Women: Taking Responsibility, Mary Guinan
Public Health Faculty Publications
A variety of magazines are directed at American women. Some emphasize fashion, while others cover child rearing, homemaking, or gardening; still others stress career, coping with multiple women's roles, or feminism. Almost without exception, women's health concerns are periodically addressed by these magazines. Because women are the target audience, I have always assumed that these publications have women's best interests at heart. Is this a realistic assumption? I'm not sure. I also do not know what influence women's magazines have on women's health behavior, but I think it is substantial. If this is so, then shouldn't we hold these publications …

The Integration Of Marketing In Colleges And Universities In The United States, Leslie A. Goldgehn
The Integration Of Marketing In Colleges And Universities In The United States, Leslie A. Goldgehn
Marketing (Formerly Marketing and Law)
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
An important element of the nonprofit sector is this country's colleges and universities. These institutions are faced with the classic marketing problems of enrollment decline, slow growth, changing buying patterns, increased competition and increased expenditures.
Despite the current need and wealth of marketing information available to universities and colleges, the literature indicates that most of these institutions have not adopted a marketing orientation.
In his 1979 dissertation, Blackburn provided data indicating the level of use of sixteen specific marketing techniques and their perceived effectiveness at 446 colleges and universities across the country. The results are rather curious--Blackburn noted …
Economics And Marketing Of Western Australian Pilchards., Scp Fisheries Consultants Pty Ltd
Economics And Marketing Of Western Australian Pilchards., Scp Fisheries Consultants Pty Ltd
Fisheries management papers
Most of the Western Australian pilchard catch comes from King George Sound and from the southern coast off Albany where the number of vessels allowed to catch has been controlled. Prospects for increasing production in this area are limited. However, there are indications that considerable quantities of pilchards could be caught in waters to the east and west of Albany, in the inshore declared purse seine development zone. Before allowing fisherman to catch more pilchards in these waters, the Western Australian Government decided that an investigation should be undertaken of the Australian pilchard resources, the domestic and export market situation …
Involved Consumers And Advertising Involvement, Katrina Lawlor
Involved Consumers And Advertising Involvement, Katrina Lawlor
Articles
The question of consumer involvement has at times taken on the appearance of a theoretical quagmire. The proliferation of definitions apart, this confusion has been exacerbated by the failure to distinguish adequately between advertising and consumer involvement. The research outlined in this article attempts to probe the possible relationship between these two discrete entities. It takes as a starting point Kassarjian's postulate of a generalised trait of purchasing involvement. This novel and as yet untested trait in consumers is cross tabulated with the levels of advertising involvement exhibited by these same consumers in a series of paint advertisements broadcast on …
Children And Television Advertising: A Cognitive Development Perspective, Darach Turley, Helen Gallagher
Children And Television Advertising: A Cognitive Development Perspective, Darach Turley, Helen Gallagher
Articles
While the population growth rate in Ireland appears at least temporarily to have ground to a halt, the fact remains that this country will have to cherish and cater for a singularly sizeable children’s market for the next decade. This article begins with a qualitative examination of Irish advertising houses’ views on their respective outputs and target groups. Central to the process of communicating with the children’s market is the need to fully appreciate its heterogeneity. Psychologically speaking the “children’s market” is a misnomer. To this end, a series of questions are administered to a sample of Dublin children to …

Compliant, Aggressive And Detached Types Differ In Generalized Purchasing Involvement, Mark E. Slama, Terrell G. Williams, Armen Tashchian
Faculty and Research Publications
Cohen's (1967) method of determining compliant, aggressive and detached personality types is modified and employed in exploring the relationship between personality types and generalized purchasing involvement. The hypothesis that the detached personality type will be less involved in purchasing than compliant or aggressive personality types is tested and supported. Theoretical implications are discussed.
Company Turnaround Strategies: A Context For Marketing, James Wrynn, Timothy O'Mahony
Company Turnaround Strategies: A Context For Marketing, James Wrynn, Timothy O'Mahony
Articles
This article considers the literature on corporate turnaround. It examines the nature of decline as well as the causes and the various indicators of decline. Following this Hofer’s now well-established framework of analysis for the development of a turnaround strategy is described. This analysis falls into two stages: firstly, an assessment of current operational and strategic health of a firm and secondly, a consideration of turnaround options which may incorporate strategic and/or operational change. This model is then assessed in the context of a number of Irish firms in a turnaround situation. Important issues in turnaround strategy, such as management …
