The International Commodity Markets weakened slightly during the fourth quarter of 1983, compared with the preceding quarter. The major fa ctors which influenced developments in the markets during the period included the reaction of specul ators to movements in the sterling exchange rate as well as forecasts of the state of supply of most of the commodities.

The production and marketing of baskets in the Mammoth Cave area of Kentucky from 1880 to the present is observed in light of the cultural, technical, aesthetic, ad traditional aspects involved. The process of making a white oak ribbed basket is documented, as well as the technical and aesthetic variables from which the basket maker renders his product. The changing role of social organization and communication in the production and marketing of a traditional craft objects is also considered.

Questionnaires were sent to growers, buyers, transporters and market tenants. A low response rate from growers and buyers is interpreted as indicating the changes to market hours made by the Trust in winter 1983 were largely a non issue. Failure to respond can be interpreted as a positive reaction or ambivalence to the issue. Of those responding 89 per cent of growers and 55 per cent of buyers said the changes had no effect on their business. Transporters and market tenants were divided as to whether the changes had affected them and whether they were an improvement or not. On …

This paper provides an evaluation of the arguments and evidence advanced supporting and denying the effectiveness of various subliminal techniques used in advertising. These practices supposedly influence consumer behavior by subconsciously altering attitudes or preferences toward products. While researchers offer some marginal evidence of subliminal stimuli influencing like/dislike reactions, the marketing relevance of the evidence remains to be documented. This investigation examines the history, use, legality, and value of subliminal advertising to the marketer. It appears that in today’s United States, the burden of disease prevention is assigned to the consumer. This study examines perceptions, health related information, and demographic data of a sample of elderly Arkansas consumers, with respect to preventive health care. The 226 respondents of the survey are members of the Arkansas Household Research Panel and over fifty-five years of age.

The data gathered were subjected to standard parametric and nonparametric statistical tests, factor analysis, cluster analysis, and discriminant analysis. The analysis identified two major segments. One, with seventy percent of the total, consists of respondents having a predominantly positive attitude …
