Future Issues Facing Boston: Financing Of The City's Operating And Capital Construction Program, J. Chester Johnson

This paper reviews the important factors affecting the current status of debt finance and debt management by the City of Boston, including the City's significant credit problems and the financing implications. While significant challenges to Boston's finance and debt management have recently been met in part through a combination of fiscal austerity measures and altered operating and financing approaches, there are important new debt financing challenges facing Boston in 1984 and beyond.

Taxpayers' opinions of municipal government often focus on the property tax. Taxpayers are stingy, and they are critical as to whether their money is purchasing competent services. For citizens to have faith that government is democratic, taxes must be equitable — everyone must pay their fair share. For government to function efficiently, tax administration must be efficient in order to support city services.

The Effects Of An Experiential Based Instructional Program For Exploring Vocations In Emerging And New Technologies As Reflected By Student Growth In Career Maturity, Hilton A. Seay

The purpose of this study was to determine if participation in an experiential based instructional program for exploring vocations in emerging and new technologies would enable academically able high school juniors and seniors to attain increased maturity of attitudes and competency in career decision-making skills as measured by the Career Maturity Inventory. A total of 64 students participated in the study. Participants came from a pool of 132 junior and senior high school students identified as having a grade point average that placed them in the top thirty percent of their class. The International Commodity Markets weakened slightly during the fourth quarter of 1983, compared with the preceding quarter. The major fa ctors which influenced developments in the markets during the period included the reaction of specul ators to movements in the sterling exchange rate as well as forecasts of the state of supply of most of the commodities.

An Analysis Of Available Selection Factors For Judging The Educational Merit Of Short Duration, Out-Of-House, Management Training Programs For American Corporations, Douglas R. Loomer

The purpose of this research project was twofold. First, to determine which, if any, information items, normally known about short duration out-of-house management training programs (seminars, workshops, etc.) prior to attendance, are indicative of educational merit. Second, to utilize this knowledge of educational merit indicators to test for a difference between the educational merit of out-of-house management training programs provided by (a) academic and (b) nonacademic instructional sources.

A total of 20 program characteristics were identified as indicators of educational merit by a review of literature and/or survey of corporate training officers. Six of these 20 indicators produced a difference …

The purpose of this study is to identify and analyze the basic causes of food service employee turnover in five selected restaurants in the Miami area. The withdrawal behavior in this study is treated in terms of controllable turnover, for the purpose of management, learning more about what action to take to solve this problem which has eaten into the fabric of the hospitality industry.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of the study was to identify and discuss variables that have an effect on the sale of grain handling equipment. A case study format was used to present the analysis. The problem addressed in the study is the inability of the case study company to forecast sales. It was hypothesized that sales could be predicted using data from previous years. Multiple regression was preformed using two independent variables: the number of acres of corn harvested for grain, and the government loan rates for on farm storage facilities, with past sales of the company being the dependent variable. The production and marketing of baskets in the Mammoth Cave area of Kentucky from 1880 to the present is observed in light of the cultural, technical, aesthetic, ad traditional aspects involved. The process of making a white oak ribbed basket is documented, as well as the technical and aesthetic variables from which the basket maker renders his product. The changing role of social organization and communication in the production and marketing of a traditional craft objects is also considered.

This article illustrates the linkage between risk analysis and strategy by discussing the application of decision and risk analysis to a new product and facilities planning problem. Computers were first introduced into our lives in 1944, when the first one was designed and built for the Army. They were able to process simple information faster than man, allowing him to concentrate on more difficult problems. Progress came quickly and the first commercial use of the computer was in 1954.
