New Gripping And Binding Device Greatly Improves Preparation Of Natural Clasts For Rfid Tracking, Samuel Slaven, Isaac Slaven, Alison M. Anders
New Gripping And Binding Device Greatly Improves Preparation Of Natural Clasts For Rfid Tracking, Samuel Slaven, Isaac Slaven, Alison M. Anders
Isaac Slaven
Radio frequency identification technology (RFID) has allowed for tracking of individual clasts implanted with passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags through sedimentary systems, providing recovery rates much higher than older sediment tagging methods such as painted or magnetic clasts. However, preparation of natural clasts for PIT tag implantation has been time-consuming and dangerous with rates of catastrophic failure of clasts of ∼66% or more. Moreover, failure rates increase as clast size decreases. The authors present an improved methodology that provides nearly 100% success rates and allows for drilling of clasts down to 23 mm along the intermediate diameter. The gripping and …
Modeling And Performance Analysis Of Distributed Systems With Collaboration Behaviour Diagrams, Toqeer A. Israr
Modeling And Performance Analysis Of Distributed Systems With Collaboration Behaviour Diagrams, Toqeer A. Israr
Toqeer A Israr
The use of distributed systems, involving multiple components, has become a common industry practice. However, modeling the behaviour of such systems is a challenge, especially when the behavior consists of several collaborations of different parties, each involving possibly several starting (input) and ending (output) events of the involved components. Furthermore, the global behavior should be described as a composition of several sub-behaviours, in the following called collaborations, and each collaboration may be further decomposed into several sub-collaborations. We assume that the performance of the elementary sub-collaborations is known, and that the performance of the global behavior should be determined from …

Collaboration Between Private Sector And Academia: Arewe Compromising Our Engineering Programs?, Rigoberto Chinchilla
Rigoberto Chinchilla
A central theme in the past ASEE Main Plenary in San Antonio, Texas, was the need to prepare our students for an “effective industrial practice.” Most panelists stressed the fact that “nowadays companies do not want to spend too much in training.” The direct implication at the end of the plenary was that academia was somehow “obligated” to supply engineers with the “right skills” for these companies. With the increased pressure in cost saving, according to the panelists in the plenary, the private sector has suggested that academia has to build a curriculum “ad-hoc” so they can hire “good engineers” …

Methodology For Evaluating Statistical Equivalence In Face Recognition Using Live Subjects With Dissimilar Skin Tones, Rigoberto Chinchilla
Rigoberto Chinchilla
The general purpose of this study is to propose a methodology that can be employed in the application of facial recognition systems (FRS) to determine if a statistically significant difference exists in a facial recognition system’s ability to match two dissimilar skin tone populations to their enrolled images. A particular objective is to test the face recognition system’s ability to recognize dark or light skin tone subjects. In addition to the direct comparison of results from two different populations, this study uses a Box Behnken Design to examine four factors commonly effecting facial recognition systems. Four factors were tested, the …

Libraries began to see service competition for the first time in the 1990s, due to the Internet and Google. The necessity of being more customer-focused became apparent, and this resulted in the creation of LibQUAL+, a tool developed to quantitatively measure the quality of customer service (Saunders, 2007). While LibQUAL+ serves as a first step toward increasing quality and value for patrons, library commitment to responding to survey results is essential.Although LibQUAL+ has been used by a wide range of libraries, this paper focuses on the use of LibQUAL+ by academic libraries, using two university libraries (Vanderbilt University and the …

Challenges And Opportunities Of Health Care Supply Chain Management In The United States, Dean Elmuti, Grace Khoury, Omar Omran, Ahmed Abou-Zaid
Ahmed Abou-Zaid
This article explores current supply chain management challenges and initiatives and identifies problems that affect supply chain management success in the U.S. health-care industry. In addition, it investigates the impact of health care supply chain management (SCM) initiatives on the overall organizational effectiveness. The attitudinal results, as well as the performance results presented in this study support the claim of health care proponents that the SCM allows organizations to reduce cost, improve quality, and reduce cycle time, and leads to high performance.
International Stock Markets Response To The Federal Reserve Policy Actions: The Case Of Emerging Mena Markets, Ahmed Abou-Zaid
International Stock Markets Response To The Federal Reserve Policy Actions: The Case Of Emerging Mena Markets, Ahmed Abou-Zaid
Ahmed Abou-Zaid
Understanding the impact of external shocks on stock markets returns and volatility is crucial for market participants as volatility is synonymous with risk. The focus of this paper is to determine whether the US monetary policy decisions influence the stock market returns and volatility in Egypt, Israel, and Turkey. Efficient markets react to new information; hence a greater response would be expected in terms of trading activity if there is an unanticipated element to any information revealed. Thus, the paper decomposes the monetary policy shocks into both expected and surprise components and test their influence on the MENA stock markets. …

Corporate Historical Responsibility (Chr): Addressing A Past Of Forced Labor At Volkswagen, Claudia Janssen Danyi
Corporate Historical Responsibility (Chr): Addressing A Past Of Forced Labor At Volkswagen, Claudia Janssen Danyi
Claudia I. Janssen Danyi, PhD
This article introduces corporate historical responsibility (CHR), a concept that can guide organizations when addressing dark corporate histories. CHR holds that organizations have responsibilities toward victims of past corporate practices and toward present reconciliatory discourse. Volkswagen’s discourse about its history of forced labor during WW II serves as an example of CHR. The rhetorical analysis illustrates that CHR hinges on the recognition of the past as a moral issue and on the organization’s ability to create historical accountability, take responsibility, make public acknowledgements, and remember its past. It further illustrates that CHR creates sustainable policies that can strengthen corporate citizenship …
The Equivalence Of Internet Versus Paper-Based Surveys In It/Is Adoption Research In Collectivistic Cultures: The Impact Of Satisficing, Jiaming Fang, Chao Wen, Victor Prybutok
The Equivalence Of Internet Versus Paper-Based Surveys In It/Is Adoption Research In Collectivistic Cultures: The Impact Of Satisficing, Jiaming Fang, Chao Wen, Victor Prybutok
Chao Wen
An increasing proportion of information technology (IT)/information system adoption research collects data using online surveys. However, a paucity of research assesses the equivalence of paper-based versus Internet-based surveys in collectivistic cultures. Furthermore, no theoretical or empirical research investigates how cultural differences between collectivistic and individualistic cultures influence the measurement equivalence (ME) of these survey modes. To explore these issues, online and paper-based surveys with comparable samples were carried out in both an individualistic (the USA) and a collectivistic culture (China). Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to examine the ME across both survey modes in these different cultures. Results indicate that …
Stochastic Performance Analysis Of Distributed Activities, Toqeer A. Israr
Stochastic Performance Analysis Of Distributed Activities, Toqeer A. Israr
Toqeer A Israr
This paper analyzes stochastic performance of a distributed global activity, composed of sub-activities sequenced serially, probabilistically, or concurrently. We provide general formulas with which we calculate the per-formance of a composite activity based on the performance of the constituent sub-activities and the control structure. To do this, we model each sub-activity as a Partially Ordered Specification (POS), where each sub-activity is character-ized by independent input events, dependent output events and the stochastic minimum delays between these events. This technique allows two or more sub-activities to be combined hierarchically. Proofs of correctness for these formu-las are given and a simple example …
Performance Modeling Of Distributed Collaboration Services With Independent Inputs/Outputs, Toqeer A. Israr, Gregor V. Bochmann
Performance Modeling Of Distributed Collaboration Services With Independent Inputs/Outputs, Toqeer A. Israr, Gregor V. Bochmann
Toqeer A Israr
This paper deals with modeling and performance analysis of dis-tributed applications, service compositions and workflow systems. From the functional perspective, the distributed application is modeled as an activity in-volving several roles, where behavior is defined in terms of compositions from several sub-activities using the standard sequencing operators found in UML Activity Diagrams. Each activity is characterized by a certain number of input and output events, and the performance of the activity is defined by the mini-mum delays that apply for a given output event in respect to each input event. We use a partial order to model these events, whose …

An Assessment Of Equivalence Between Internet And Paper-Based Surveys: Evidence From Collectivistic Cultures, Jiaming Fang, Chao Wen, Victor R. Prybutok
Chao Wen
Little research exists that addresses the equivalence in collectivistic cultures of paper- versus Internet-based surveys. This study addressed this gap and examined the measurement equivalence of individual innovativeness scales between Internet surveys and paper-based surveys within a collectivistic culture (with China serving as our example). The study analyzed and compared survey data from both paper and web-based surveys using confirmatory factor analysis. The assessment of invariance included the levels of configural, metric, scalar, and covariance invariance. The means and variance of latent variables were also compared. The results show that measurements are invariant at the two levels (configural and metric), …

The Impact Of Three Interfaces For 360-Degree Video On Spatial Cognition, Wutthigrai Boonsuk, Stephen B. Gilbert, Jonathan W. Kelly
Wutthigrai Boonsuk
In this paper, we describe an experiment designed to evaluate the effectiveness of three interfaces for surveillance or remote control using live 360-degree video feeds from a person or vehicle in the field. Video feeds are simulated using a game engine. While locating targets within a 3D terrain using a 2D 360-degree interface, participants indicated perceived egocentric directions to targets and later placed targets on an overhead view of the terrain. Interfaces were compared based on target finding and map placement performance. Results suggest 1) nonseamless interfaces with visual boundaries facilitate spatial understanding, 2) correct perception of self-to-object relationships is …

Addressing Corporate Ties To Slavery: Corporate Apologia In A Discourse Of Reconciliation, Claudia Irene Janssen
Addressing Corporate Ties To Slavery: Corporate Apologia In A Discourse Of Reconciliation, Claudia Irene Janssen
Claudia I. Janssen Danyi, PhD
Pressured by activists to take responsibility, American corporations recently found themselves in the spotlight for their past ties to slavery. Responding to the issue, they stepped into a complex discourse of reconciliation. Taking a rhetorical approach, this article analyzes the response of Aetna Inc. It explores how corporate rhetoric functions within present discourses about historical injustices and illustrates that Aetna's response informed by common strategies of corporate apologia inhibited meaningful reconciliation. The article thus furthers criticisms of (corporate) apologia in the context of historical injustice and raises questions about the potentialities and limitations of corporate rhetoric for reconciliation.

Off The Hook: Does The Supreme Court's Scheme Liability Ruling Benefit Firms In Litigation-Prone Industries?, Candra S. Chahyadi, Menghistu Sallehu
Candra S. Chahyadi
This study measures the impact afthe U.S. Supreme Court's 2008 ruling Stoneridge Investment Partners vs. Scientific-Atlanta on the cumulative abnormal returns and changes in bid-ask spread of firms in litigation-prone industries (computer, electronic, pharmaceuticallbiotech, and retail industries). Although we find, in general, positive CARs around the event, we posit and find that the conditional probability that a firm will commit an accounting misstatement affects both CAR and bid-ask spread The results show that firms with a higher probability of committing financial misstatements experience lower returns around the court's ruling. That is, the ruling increases information asymmetry and uncertainty, and thus …

Social networking sites (SNS) have become a significant component of people’s daily lives and have revolutionized the ways that business is conducted, from product development and marketing to operation and human resource management. However, there have been few systematic studies that ask why people use such systems. To try to determine why, we proposed a model based on uses and gratifications theory. Hypotheses were tested using PLS on data collected from 148 SNS users. We found that user utilitarian (rational and goal-oriented) gratifications of immediate access and coordination, hedonic (pleasure-oriented) gratifications of affection and leisure, and website social presence were …

Participation Willingness In Web Surveys: Exploring Effect Of Sponsoring Corporation’S And Survey Provider’S Reputation, Jiaming Fang, Chao Wen, Robert Pavur
Chao Wen
Prior research involving response rates in Web-based surveys has not adequately addressed the effect of the reputation of a sponsoring corporation that contracts with a survey provider. This study investigates the effect of two factors, namely, the reputation of a survey’s provider and the reputation of a survey’s sponsoring corporation, on the willingness of potential respondents to participate in a Web survey. Results of an experimental design with these two factors reveal that the sponsoring corporation’s and the survey provider’s strong reputations can induce potential respondents to participate in a Web survey. A sponsoring corporation’s reputation has a greater effect …

Predicting Potential Respondents’ Decision To Participate In Web Surveys, Chao Wen, Jiaming Fang
Chao Wen
Web-based surveys have received increasing attention given the potential benefits of convenience, low cost, and time saving compared with other survey modes. However, the use of the internet to collect data is restrained by the lack of willingness of people to respond. The objective of this research is to expose the determinants of intention to participate in a web survey. Based on the theory of reasoned action, this research proposes a model encompassing attitude toward a web survey, social norm, moral obligation, trust in the sponsor of a survey, topic involvement, topic sensitivity, and reputation of the sponsor to predict …

The purpose of this paper is to examine the influence of individualistic cultures (such as the American culture) and collectivistic cultures (such as the Chinese culture) on the interrelationship among service quality, food quality, perceived value, customer satisfaction, and behavioral intentions in the fast-food industry. First, the authors provide empirical evidence of the robust relationships among the constructs across diverse cultures. Second, they investigate how moderator variables such as customer age, gender, and national culture affect customer behavioral intentions. Moreover, they examine how national culture, as a moderator, affects the magnitude of the relationships among these constructs. Using survey data …

Services As The Crucial Factor For The Success Of Retailing In Croatia, Sanda Renko, Marko Grunhagen
Marko Grunhagen
The era of intense competition in all spheres of the global economy has forced companies to spare no effort to retain their market share and to compete successfully in the marketplace. This is particularly evident in the retail sector which is one of the fastest growing and most competitive sectors of the Croatian economy. Over the last decade, retailers have faced many challenges. On the one hand, there are ever more sophisticated and more demanding customers. On the other hand, there is intense competition in retailing: non-store retail formats, vertical integration, large store formats, to name a few. It requires …

The Role Of Education And Experience In Cfo Career And Compensation, Candra S. Chahyadi, Bahaa Abusalim
Candra S. Chahyadi
We examine the educational and experience backgrounds of chief financial officers (CFOs) of large and medium firms and investigate how measures of education and experience affect CFO career and compensation. We find that, compared to medium firms, large firms have more CFOs with MBA degrees and fewer CFOs with M.Acc degrees or who are also CPAs, suggesting that large firms prefer CFOs with more general knowledge than CFOs with a specific knowledge. We also find that firm size and CFO’s tenure at their current company consistently dominate measures of education and experience in determining CFO compensation.

The popularity of the concept of social responsibility makes it a pertinent area for research by accounting scholars. This paper analyzes the current usage and understanding of the concept of social responsibility. Using the definitions used in academia and industry a preliminary scale is developed to measure social responsibility. As a pilot study, this scale is administered to business owners. Based on the responses of 57 Business owners, the psychometric properties of the scale are tested and a conceptual model of the underlying dimensions of social responsibility is presented.

An Integrated Model For Customer Online Repurchase Intention, Chao Wen, Victor R. Prybutok, Chenyan Xu
Chao Wen
The explosion of e-commerce activities required industry and academia to understand the key determinants of consumers' online repurchase intention. We developed an integrated model by examining how utilitarian factors (perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness), the hedonic factor (perceived enjoyment), and social/psychological factors (confirmation, satisfaction and trust) directly or indirectly influenced consumers' continuance intention in the context of online shopping. Results from confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation model analysis with LISREL 8.72 indicate that both utilitarian factors and hedonic factors examined through this model provide statistically significant explanations of the variation in consumers' online repurchase intention. In the …
