The Function Of Narrative In Leadership: Theoretical Foundations And Empirical Evidence, Michael S. Carriger Dec 2010

The Function Of Narrative In Leadership: Theoretical Foundations And Empirical Evidence, Michael S. Carriger

WCBT Faculty Publications

This research is focused on the differential impacts of narrative and facts and figures on the understanding of corporate strategy or competitive advantage. In this way a theoretical (philosophical) foundation can be laid for narrative and the understanding of corporate strategy. Additionally, much needed theoretically sound, empirical validation can be offered for the use of narrative and storytelling by leaders within organizations as a means of creating, disseminating, and executing strategy. Employing a model derived from the tension between modern and post-modern thinking about the nature of ideas and concepts a conceptual framework is offered to try to explain the possible …

Corporate Financial Policies And Informed Trading, Abu S. Amin Sep 2010

Corporate Financial Policies And Informed Trading, Abu S. Amin

WCBT Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the information content of corporate financial policies, in particular dividend changes and share repurchases, by examining their announcements effects on the behavior of informed traders. If unexpected dividend changes or share repurchases have information content, then there should be announcements effects on the extent of informed trading. I test this hypothesis by estimating the extent of informed trading before and after the dividends, tender offers and Dutch auctions announcements. I estimate the informed trading when the dividends announcements are informative [i.e. announcements contain surprises] and compares it when dividends announcements are not informative [i.e. announcements contain no …

International Clustering And Foreign Subsidiary Performance, Jing'an Tang Aug 2010

International Clustering And Foreign Subsidiary Performance, Jing'an Tang

WCBT Faculty Publications

The article discusses the development and testing of a network-based model of international clustering and foreign subsidiary performance in an attempt to determine how multinational companies (MNC) enter a foreign country to build their own foreign cluster. It focuses on the foreign peer network (FPN) to incorporate both the social and economic interactions within a cluster. An FPN is described as a set of social and economic relations among a group of foreign subsidiaries that are from the same home country and run same or similar businesses within a common geographic area in the host country. Why Work When You Can Shirk?: Worker Productivity In An Experimental Setting, Russell P. Engel Aug 2010

Why Work When You Can Shirk?: Worker Productivity In An Experimental Setting, Russell P. Engel

WCBT Faculty Publications

Employee shirking has the potential to be extremely costly to firms. To counter the productivity loss caused by shirking, firms may institute various incentive schemes. Previous experimental research has shown that while monitoring does decrease shirking, some subjects work without explicit financial incentives. This paper presents the experimental results of an economic experiment designed to investigate the effect of various incentive schemes on subject behavior. Subjects are allowed to engage two tasks; one task mimics work for an employer, the other task allows for gains due to shirking. We find that subjects who are given incentives to shirk do in …

Information-Based Trading And The Bid-Ask Spread, Kee H. Chung, Jing Jiang Jun 2010

Information-Based Trading And The Bid-Ask Spread, Kee H. Chung, Jing Jiang

WCBT Faculty Publications

We analyze the equilibrium spread when the transaction size of informed traders is elastic in the value of private information (α). We show that the pooling equilibrium is likely to be inefficient when trade size is sensitive to α and the inefficient equilibrium can occur before the market breaks down. The pooling equilibrium spread does not monotonically increase with α, although it increases with the elasticity of informed trades to α. The upper bound of the elasticity of informed trades for the market to remain open for the active specialist is higher than the corresponding value for the passive specialist …

Fair Value Accounting: Affect On The Auditing Profession, Danny A. Pannese, Alan Delfavero May 2010

Fair Value Accounting: Affect On The Auditing Profession, Danny A. Pannese, Alan Delfavero

WCBT Faculty Publications

During this period of global markets, multinational corporations are demanding financial accounting standards with enhanced uniformity. In an effort to achieve this objective, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB) have been working together on the Convergence Project, aiming to develop accounting standards that closely correlate with international financial reporting standards. In September 2006 and February 2007, the FASB issued two key fair value accounting (FVA) standards which focused on providing guidelines for fair value measurement (through a classification hierarchy), expanding disclosure requirements, and also allowing business entities to increase FVA's application. However, the …

A New Regulatory Framework Of Financial Institutions In The Aftermath Of The Global Financial Crisis, Ingrid Zantis Apr 2010

A New Regulatory Framework Of Financial Institutions In The Aftermath Of The Global Financial Crisis, Ingrid Zantis

WCBT Undergraduate Publications

Three years since the outbreak of the global financial and economic crisis and two years since the global markets’ turmoil following the Lehman Brothers’ bankruptcy and the US government’s bail-out of AIG, reforming the regulatory structure for financial institutions and platforms has achieved some visible progress. Though the new architecture is far from being finished, the main challenge is to implement what has been agreed upon in commitments and framework legislation, without losing track of the target to soundly improve global financial stability and effectively resolve future global crises on its way.

Against this background, this paper examines the emerging …

Workers' Migration And Remittances In Bangladesh, Khawaja Mamun, Hiranya K. Nath

WCBT Faculty Publications

Bangladesh has sent more than 6.7 million workers to over 140 countries during a period of more than three decades since the mid-1970s. Most of these workers temporarily migrated to work in Middle East and Southeast Asia. This mass movement of temporary migrant workers has, to some extent, eased unemployment pressures on the over-burdened labor market in this highly populated country. More importantly, the remittance transfers received from these migrant workers have reached a phenomenal level of over 10 billion US dollars in 2009, approximately 12 percent of GDP in Bangladesh. This paper analyzes the trends and various other aspects …

Developing High-Growth Businesses In Rural Areas: A Study Of Four U.S. States, William B. Lamb, Hugh Sherman

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Those who would establish high-growth businesses (HGBs) in rural settings face significant challenges. We report findings from more than 80 in-depth interviews regarding the obstacles that rural HGBs face and identify approaches for overcoming these obstacles. First, interviews confirm the need for improved access to a full range of financing options to support HGBs across different development stages. Second, HGBs need in-depth, sophisticated technical assistance, which is generally unavailable in rural areas. Finally, cooperation among financial and technical service providers is vital to program success. Based on these findings, a model is proposed for successful development of HGBs in rural …

Alcohol Abuse In The Workplace: Developing A Workable Plan Of Action, Pearl Jacobs, Linda Schain

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Businesses readily acknowledge that employees who use illegal drugs pose a significant risk to the company and its employees. Alcohol use on the job creates an even greater risk yet companies often do not deal with the use or abuse of alcohol in the same manner as the use of illegal drugs. The danger in the use of alcohol is not limited to those diagnosed as alcoholics. A threat is present when an employee consumes two or three beers at lunch and then returns to work. These individuals do the most to create a hazardous situation. The abuse of alcohol …

Effectively Hedging The Interest Rate Risk Of Wide Floating Rate Coupon Spreads, Thomas Schröder, Kwamie Dunbar Jan 2010

Effectively Hedging The Interest Rate Risk Of Wide Floating Rate Coupon Spreads, Thomas Schröder, Kwamie Dunbar

WCBT Working Papers

Bond issuers frequently immunize/hedge their interest rate exposure by means of interest rate swaps (IRS). The receiving leg matches all bond cash-flows, while the pay leg requires floating rate coupon payments of form LIBOR + a spread. The goal of hedging against interest rate risk is only achieved in full if the present value of this spread is zero. Using market data we show that under a traditional IRS hedging strategy an investor could still experience significant cash flow losses given a 1% shift in the underlying benchmark yield curve.

We consider the instantaneous interest-rate risk of a bond portfolio …

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

As of 2007, there were an estimated 10.4 million businesses in the United States that were owned and operated by women. The number of women-owned firms has continued to grow at around twice the rate of all firms for the past two decades (Center for Women’s Business Research, 2008). On the other hand, women comprise only 15.4 percent of corporate officers in Fortune 500 companies (Catalyst, 2007b) and, in 2003, held only 14.8 percent of board seats in the Fortune 500 (Catalyst, 2007a).To better understand the glass ceiling faced by both female entrepreneurs and women leaders, the research on women’s …

Smes And Poverty Alleviation In Nigeria: Marketing Resources And Capabilities Implications, Olalekan U. Asikhia

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This article seeks to identify the mediating role of marketing resources and capabilities in small and medium enterprises (SMEs)—poverty alleviation relationship. A qualitative approach of conceptualization of the interconnectedness of the major variables of the study is undertaken. Despite several development programs of SMEs and poverty alleviation, the poverty level of Nigerian SMEs has dragged with incidence of high SMEs failure. Marketing resources and capabilities are suggested as probable missing links between SMEs and profitable exchanges that lead to wealth creation, thus alleviating and eradicating poverty. While empirical study in this direction is vital, the current conceptual model shows that …

Preventing Security Breaches In Business, Pearl Jacobs, Linda Schain

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Technological advancements are constantly changing the world we live in. These advancements are not only changing how we work but also the security of our workplace. High level white collar crime is rapidly becoming a fact of corporate life. Businesses want to avoid becoming victims of these white collar criminals so they attempt to institute controls on all aspects of their operations. These controls are far from 100% effective. Businesses need to take a different approach to the prevention of white collar crime. Perhaps more effective prevention programs can be developed by exploring the various theories of crime causation and …

A Common Eurozone Bond, Erik Welin Jan 2010

A Common Eurozone Bond, Erik Welin

WCBT Undergraduate Publications

Introduction

The sovereign bond yields of the Eurozone, or more correctly the euro area, have since the introduction of the Euro undergone a bond yield compression. However, as can be seen in table 1, these bond yields started to diverge considerably around mid 2008 following the recent financial crisis and increased sovereign risk. Yields on Greek, Irish, and Portuguese bond have diverged the most from for example German bonds. Based upon this and the ongoing economic integration within the EU and Eurozone, proposals for a common Eurozone bond have been raised. There are many pros and cons with such a …

Single and multiple interruption conditions were not significantly different. Participants in the multiple interruption condition felt more stress than those in the uninterrupted condition, although stress levels were low in both conditions. Perceptions of time pressure and flow were not different across conditions. Performance on the interrupting task (a word search puzzle) was not significantly different across …

College Interns: An Entrepreneurial Response To A Cost-Conscious Economy, Jacqueline S. Scerbinski Jan 2010

College Interns: An Entrepreneurial Response To A Cost-Conscious Economy, Jacqueline S. Scerbinski

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

College interns often possess information-age skills that are not familiar to workers who have been on the job for several years. Interns may be future sources for new employees. There is also the added benefit of observing and evaluating an intern for future consideration, as a full-time employee, after graduation. Giving junior employees the opportunity to supervise interns is also a way of evaluating the junior employees’ potential as a supervisor. The employment of college interns should be a mutually beneficial endeavor. As with all successful endeavors, the employment of interns requires planning and supervision.

A Comparative Examination Of Career And Start-Up Expectations In South Korea, Ukraine, And The United States, Sherrie Human, Thomas D. Clark, Charles H. Matthews, Julie M. Stewart, Candace R. Gunnarsson

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Relatively few comparative studies have examined how perceptions across cultures might converge or diverge regarding careers in general and new venture careers in particular. Our research addresses this gap by providing a comparative study of career perceptions among undergraduate business students in three countries with different levels of experience with capitalism: Ukraine, South Korea, and the United States. Results suggest both surprising differences and interesting similarities between undergraduate students in the three countries with regard to how they perceive characteristics associated with entrepreneurial careers. Findings are discussed in the context of distinct differences and commonalities across cultures and implications for …
