The Role Of Emotional Expression In Accessing Social Networks: The Case Of Newcomers' Blogs, Michael J. Hine, Luciara Nardon, Daniel Gulanowski

Journal of International Technology and Information Management

Research has established the critical role of social networks in facilitating adjustment to foreign environments. Increasingly, social interactions are happening through computer mediated technology. This paper explores the role of emotional expression in newcomers’ blogs in developing and interacting with social networks in a new country. This research uses a dictionary-based text analytics approach to detect emotional expression in newcomers’ blog posts and their associated discussions. Blog posts with more emotional expression had more associated responses; discussions tended to be more positive than posts; and the relative amount of negative emotion in the discussions increases as posts become more negative. …

This study empirically examines how the adoption of new accounting standards impacts book-tax differences (BTDs) and analyzes the role of changes in accounting rules as an important function of the book-tax income gap. The primary objective of this study is to present preliminary evidence on how the adoption of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) impacts the book-tax income gap in the case of the public firms in the Netherlands, a country with low book tax alignment. The purpose of this project was to test for such relations between the markets of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the United States (U.S.). The GCC countries include the six countries of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). All six countries stock markets are put to the test to look for correlations and to determine the impact of any relationship between them and the U.S. On the other hand, the U.S. is the largest economy, as it represents one of the largest energy consumers of their oil production.

The thesis examined the differences between the Chinese market, a fast-growing emerging market, and that of the United States, a well-known developed market. In order to understand the overall performance of the Chinese stock market, the research compared the risk and returns characteristics of Chinese stock markets using the S & P 500 Index for the 2000-2005 period. Findings show that significant differences exist between the Chinese and the U.S. markets. The thesis also attempted to identify the characteristics of the Chinese markets that hinder their efficiency.

The present research proposes a general model of Transnational Teams (TNTs) to investigate how value placed on cultural diversity, cultural adaptation, communication quality, and trust affect the performance of TNTs and their interaction to each other. TNTs contribute to decisions about a firm's total portfolio of transnational interests, global brands and products, organizational configuration, and global sourcing strategy. Qualitative and quantitative methods are applied in this study of thirty members of TNTs from diverse teams.
