Achieving Financial Stability Through Financial Market Integration With Asia, Ahmed Khalid, Asif Saeed Jan 2016

Achieving Financial Stability Through Financial Market Integration With Asia, Ahmed Khalid, Asif Saeed

Ahmed Khalid

Extract; The White Paper on Australia in the Asian Century (Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet ) [DPMC], 2012) correctly indicated that Asia’s extraordinary recent economic performance as well as the future economic outlook cannot be overlooked when planning Australia’s future economic prospects. It is strategically and geographically important for Australia to integrate itself with Asia, in order to achieve and maintain sustainable economic growth. The Asian success story emphasises the important role of the financial market development and integration in providing financial stability to the region. This is especially true in the aftermath of the Asian Financial Crisis …

Regional Economic Modelling: A Comparison Of Econometric, Input-Output And Integrated Modelling Of The Illawarra Economy, Ashkan Masouman, Charles Harvie Aug 2015

Regional Economic Modelling: A Comparison Of Econometric, Input-Output And Integrated Modelling Of The Illawarra Economy, Ashkan Masouman, Charles Harvie

Ashkan Masouman

The adoption of an integrated input-output and econometric (IO-EC) framework has gained increased attention in the regional science literature. Such an integrated framework attempts to combine the dynamic characteristic of time-series with the detailed intersectoral disaggregation of input-output (IO) analysis, to model the time path of the economy at the regional level and to provide more accuracy in representing the economic structure and analysing structural shifts within a regional economy. This paper applies econometric modelling, an IO analysis, and integrated IO-EC modelling to analyse the Illawarra region of NSW; the results from each of these models are then compared. The …

Regional Economic Modelling: Taxonomic Application Of Three Integration Approaches To The Illawarra's Economy, Ashkan Masouman, Charles Harvie Aug 2015

Regional Economic Modelling: Taxonomic Application Of Three Integration Approaches To The Illawarra's Economy, Ashkan Masouman, Charles Harvie

Ashkan Masouman

The integration of input-output analysis and econometric models has gained popularity for its superior performance in analysing the structure of a region's economy and examining the impacts of policies on a regional economy (West, 1995; Rey, 2000; Motii, 2005). There are a number of approaches through which an input-output model is integrated with an econometric model. This paper examines three approaches to regional integrated econometric input-output modelling, namely holistic embedding, coupling, and linking, from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Each approach is analysed based on their simulation and forecasting characteristics. All three approaches are applied to the Illawarra region of …

Impact Of Socio-Economic Factors And Social Affiliation On Living Standards: A Quantile Regression Approach Impact Of Socio-Economic Factors And Social Affiliation On Living Standards: A Quantile Regression Approach, Renuka Mahadevan, Sandy Suardi May 2015

Impact Of Socio-Economic Factors And Social Affiliation On Living Standards: A Quantile Regression Approach Impact Of Socio-Economic Factors And Social Affiliation On Living Standards: A Quantile Regression Approach, Renuka Mahadevan, Sandy Suardi

Sandy Suardi

The influence of socio-economic factors and social affiliation on living standards is shown to be contingent on the living standard status of the household. This new result casts doubt on studies that use conditional mean regression analysis and the Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition analysis to study the impact of 'characteristics' and 'structural' components in areas such as poverty, health and labour market outcomes.

Trade Liberalisation And Growth: A Threshold Expectation, Rod Falvey, Neil Foster-Mcgregor, Ahmed Khalid Jul 2014

Trade Liberalisation And Growth: A Threshold Expectation, Rod Falvey, Neil Foster-Mcgregor, Ahmed Khalid

Ahmed Khalid

Openness and trade liberalisation variables are consistently estimated to have significant positive coefficients in panel growth regressions. Many arguments have been advanced as to why and how more open or liberalised economies might grow faster, but the specific channels this process uses have begun to be investigated only recently. We continue these efforts by including a variable identifying the date of trade liberalisation in a system of equations that captures the determinants of growth in per capita income. Four ‘channels’ are considered: capital formation, the share of government, the economy’s openness to trade and its price distortions. We include the …

Special Issue On The Economic Effects Of Minimum Wages In Germany: Editorial, Alfredo Paloyo, Sandra Schaffner, Christoph Schmidt Feb 2014

Special Issue On The Economic Effects Of Minimum Wages In Germany: Editorial, Alfredo Paloyo, Sandra Schaffner, Christoph Schmidt

Alfredo R Paloyo

This special issue of the German Economic Review addresses one of the most contentious areas of modern labor economics: the economic effects of statutory minimum wages. This topic is as challenging intellectually as the publication of these studies is timely. With respect to the analytical challenge to be mastered, the history of labor economic thought on this issue demonstrates the vicissitudes of empirical research in all the social sciences, not the least in Economics, which operate in an ever-changing environment, with new preferences, new institu- tions and new data emerging all the time. In fact, within the realm of econom- …

The Regional Economic Effects Of Military Base Realignments And Closures In Germany, Alfredo Paloyo, Colin Vance, Matthias Vorell Feb 2014

The Regional Economic Effects Of Military Base Realignments And Closures In Germany, Alfredo Paloyo, Colin Vance, Matthias Vorell

Alfredo R Paloyo

We identify the causal effect of a reduction in military personnel on a number of socioeconomic indicators within the peripheries of military bases. The base realignments and closures in Germany are used as an exogenous source of variation that allows us to identify the effect of a demand shock on household income, output, unemployment, and tax revenue within a specified buffer zone around each base. The analysis covers 298 communities for the period 2003-2007. Consistent with evidence found elsewhere, we find that these base adjustments have only a marginal impact on the local community in which the bases are located.
