Unpacking Unintended Consequences In Planned Organizationalchanges: A Process Model, Guowei Jian

The author develops a process model of the unintended consequences in planned organizational change that draws on the structuration, organizational change, and organizational tension literatures. The model depicts the communicative actions of both senior management and employees and reveals the dynamic through which unintended consequences unfold. The model extends theoretical understandings of planned organizational change and discusses how future research can build a dialectic and dialogic model of planned change focused on employee participation. The congruence model of leader–member exchange (LMX) quality predicts that agreement between leader and members regarding relationship quality is associated with follower performance. However, questions remain over how cultural relational norms influence congruence. This study, based on a government-linked international joint venture in Malaysia, investigates cultural relational norms in relation to leader–member agreement on relational quality and leader evaluation of member performance. Our findings revealed that LMX quality agreement was related to in-role and extra-role performance among dyadic relationships conforming to Malaysian cultural norms. Objective: This pilot study aimed to establish the appropriateness of the Model of Juggling Occupations in exploring the complex experience of role balance amongst working women with family responsibilities living in Perth, Australia. Methods: In meeting this aim, an evaluation was conducted of a case study design, where data were collected through a questionnaire, time diary, and interview. Results: Overall role balance varied over time and across participants. Positive indicators of role balance occurred frequently in the questionnaires and time diaries, despite the interviews revealing a predominance of negative evaluations of role balance. Is It Me Or Her? How Gender Composition Influences Interpersonally Sensitive Behavior On Collaborative Cross-Boundary Projects, Michele Williams

This paper investigates how professional workers’ willingness to act with interpersonal sensitivity is influenced by the gender and power of their interaction partners. We call into question the idea that mixed-gender interactions involve more interpersonal sensitivity than all-male interactions primarily because women demonstrate more interpersonal sensitivity than do men. Rather, we argue that the social category “women” can evoke more sensitive behavior from others such that men as well as women contribute to an increase in sensitivity in mixed-gender interactions. Thailand is currently putting considerable effort into their attempts to attract a new type of traveller, the medical tourist, to visit their destination for a combination of health, medical and travel purposes. While significant research effort has been devoted to the ethical and legal issues related to medical tourism, relative limited research has focussed on the destination decision making process of people who choose to engage in medical tourism. This paper presents the results of an online survey which explores the travel motivations, information search behavior and destination choice criteria of a sample of prospective medical tourists to Thailand.

Tourist destination brand image is a major influencing factor in traveller destination choice. This exploaratory research into the information sources form which destination brand image evolves provides insights which have the potential to improve tourism destination brand development strategies. In-depth interview with 21 international backpackers on Australia's northern NSW coast indicate that mainstream media play little or no part in the formation of respondents' image of the coastal destination of Byron Bay. Many governments within Australia actively support Masters Games with the expectation that such events generate significant economic benefits. However, while research demonstrates that 'non-local' participants provide greater economic value to the host region, little is known about this key participant category. In particular, previous Masters Games research has only briefly considered the influence of travel on participant motives. In order to address this gap in the literature, a qualitative investigation of the motives among non-local Masters Games participants was undertaken.
