It is the Christmas season again! The bell ringers of the Salvation Army can be heard everywhere and generous people throw loose change or dollar bills into the Christmas kettles. Unfortunately, the kettles are not as full recently. Last year, the Salvation Army observed a 10% drop in the donations raised by the Christmas Kettles program. Business students appreciate working on classroom projects that are pleasurable and also prepare them for future careers. Promoting competition among project teams is often used as a method to motivate students. We have developed the “Humanitarian Logistics Project (HLP)” to teach undergraduate students the logistical implications of unsolicited material donations in disaster relief. To encourage competition, students are organized into teams of three and tasked with designing humanitarian public service announcements (PSAs) that improve the understanding of humanitarian issues in the general public. At present, the lack of a wholly integrated health information system leads to redundancy for the patient and a struggle for providers to coordinate care and control costs. Patients become frustrated to repeat complex sets of information and health history to multiple providers, such as emergency personnel, hospital admission staff, and primary care doctors, often within one episode of care. Patients and providers may lose faith in the medical system. Information that patients convey may not be properly captured. University of Rhode Island business and computer engineering students have joined forces to create an online calculator for the USAID Center for International Disaster Information (CIDI) that clearly demonstrates the inefficiency of donating goods after disaster strikes and makes a case for giving money instead. Third-party quality assurance seals have emerged as a prominent mechanism to reduce uncertainty and increase purchase conversion in online markets. However, systematic studies of the effectiveness of these seals are scarce. In this study, we exploit a unique data set of 9,098 shopping sessions at an online retailer's website to empirically measure the value and effectiveness of assurance seals on the likelihood of purchase by shoppers. The data set is collected from a randomized field experiment conducted by a large seal provider, which enables us to infer the causal impacts of the presence of an assurance seal. We find strong …
