Starting With Howard Gardner’S Five Minds, Adding Elliott Jaques’S Responsibility Time Span: Implications For Undergraduate Management Education, Diana Stork, Jill Woodilla, Stephen M. Brown, John Ogilvie, Regina Rutter, Mary Trefry

Organization Management Journal

This article offers a perspective on management education derived from Howard Gardner’s five minds framework and Elliott Jaques’s responsibility time span. We describe the five minds (disciplined, synthesizing, creating, respectful, and ethical) and discuss some of the criticisms raised about Gardner’s approach. We introduce Jaques’s time span concept and suggest its applicability to the structuring of roles in a school of management. Putting Jacques together with Gardner allows us to explore questions about the five minds that could be addressed by deans, department chairs, and faculty members, each with a different responsibility time span.

Think Global, Act Local: A Methodology For Investigating International Business Curriculum Priorities Using Stakeholder Feedback, Jeanie M. Forray, Janelle E. Goodnight

Organization Management Journal

Business schools are engaged increasingly in the development and improvement of international business programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Often, such efforts are based on ‘‘how to’’ recommendations from experts in the field or ‘‘best practices’’ from other institutions. In an effort to better address the specific needs of individual institutions, this article suggests an evidence-based methodology for curricular design and describes one study of local constituency needs used to inform improvement efforts of an existing undergraduate international business program at a small, private college in the Northeast. Based on the findings, the authors describe changes in their school’s …

Strategic Transformation Process: Toward Purpose, People, Process And Power, Elizabeth B. Davis, James Kee, Kathryn Newcomer Mar 2010

Strategic Transformation Process: Toward Purpose, People, Process And Power, Elizabeth B. Davis, James Kee, Kathryn Newcomer

Organization Management Journal

Across the world, public and non-profit sector leaders face an extremely turbulent socio-political-economic environment. This environment creates additional risks and uncertainties for organizations and may hinder a leader’s ability to act strategically. Addressing these complex, constantly evolving conditions requires leaders to develop processes that involve the organization’s stakeholders and that create organizational conditions for self-generation, creativity, resilience and action planning. In this paper we provide an organizational-level, integrative framework for the strategic transformation of public and non-profit organizations to assist leaders who are committed to effective stewardship of their organizations. The Strategic Transformation Process involves an intense dialogue among organizational …

‘‘Is The Socially Responsible Corporation A Myth? The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Of Corporate Social Responsibility’’ By Timothy M. Devinney In Academy Of Management Perspectives, May 2009, Kathleen R. Johnson Mar 2010

‘‘Is The Socially Responsible Corporation A Myth? The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly Of Corporate Social Responsibility’’ By Timothy M. Devinney In Academy Of Management Perspectives, May 2009, Kathleen R. Johnson

Organization Management Journal

The following review provides a summary of and comment on Timothy M. Devinney’s article entitled ‘‘Is the Socially Responsible Corporation a Myth? The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of Corporate Social Responsibility.’’ I argue that Devinney provides a convincing explanation for the failure of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in current predatory, oligopolistic business practices. His exposition provides an initial and necessary first step towards addressing the inequitable systems of organization that contribute to our social and environmental problems.

Redefining The Epistomology Of The Coporate / Not-For-Profit Engagement, David Cooke Dr Feb 2010

Redefining The Epistomology Of The Coporate / Not-For-Profit Engagement, David Cooke Dr

David Cooke

An understanding of why corporations engage in corporate social investment and corporate philanthropy is vital if not-for-profit organisations are to engage effcetively in raising funds from this sector. This article indicates that their is a return on investment for companies who partner with the not-for-profit sector and approaches need to focus on this rather than an appeal to altruism.

What’S In It For Them? Advantages Of Higher Status Partners In Exchange Relationships, Fabrizio Castellucci, Gokhan Ertug Feb 2010

What’S In It For Them? Advantages Of Higher Status Partners In Exchange Relationships, Fabrizio Castellucci, Gokhan Ertug

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This article explores the motivations that high-status firms have to enter exchange relationships with lower-status partners. We argue that high-status firms can secure greater effort from lower-status partners and that the amount of effort will be proportional to their status advantage over these partners. We further propose that such effort will translate to increased performance by mediating the negative consequences of affiliations with lower-status partners. This increase in performance constitutes the motivation for high-status firms to enter exchange relationships with lower-status partners. Findings using data on Formula One racing support our argument.

Who Benefits From Teams? Comparing Workers, Supervisors, And Managers, Rosemary Batt Jan 2010

Who Benefits From Teams? Comparing Workers, Supervisors, And Managers, Rosemary Batt

Rosemary Batt

This paper offers a political explanation for the diffusion and sustainability of team-based work systems by examining the differential outcomes of team structures for 1200 workers, supervisors, and middle managers in a large unionized telecommunications company. Regression analyses show that participation in self-managed teams is associated with significantly higher levels of perceived discretion, employment security, and satisfaction for workers and the opposite for supervisors. Middle managers who initiate team innovations report higher employment security, but otherwise are not significantly different from their counterparts who are not involved in innovations. By contrast, there are no significant outcomes for employees associated with …

Ssrn As An Initial Revolution In Academic Knowledge Aggregation And Dissemination, David Bray, Sascha Vitzthum, Benn Konsynski

Sascha Vitzthum

Within this paper we consider our results of using the Social Science Research Network (SSRN) over a period of 18 months to distribute our working papers to the research community. Our experiences have been quite positive, with SSRN serving as a platform both to inform our colleagues about our research as well as inform us about related research (through email and telephoned conversations of colleagues who discovered our paper on SSRN). We then discuss potential future directions for SSRN to consider, and how SSRN might well represent an initial revolution in 21st century academic knowledge aggregation and dissemination. Our paper …

Responding To Stakeholders’ Critical Needs- The Integrative Model Of Stakeholders’ Management (Imsm), Grace S. Thomson Jan 2010

Responding To Stakeholders’ Critical Needs- The Integrative Model Of Stakeholders’ Management (Imsm), Grace S. Thomson

Dr. Grace S. Thomson

Organizations are increasingly required to enhance their accountability to diverse internal and external stakeholders (Burrows, 1999). Knowing and understanding stakeholders’ expectations increases the ability of an organization to effectively respond to those expectations. Stakeholder relationship management is critical for corporate sustainability (Perrini & Tencati, 2006) or “capacity of a firm to continue operating over a long period of time” (p. 296). Organizations may benefit from developing collaborative interactions with their stakeholders, integrating their values and views into the formulation and implementation of organizational goals and objectives (Merrick, Parnell, Barnett & Garcia, 2005; Susniene & Vanagas, 2006).

The Effect Of Initial Entry Training On The Moral And Character Development Of Military Police Soldiers, Kenneth R. Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The U.S. Army conducts extensive training on its core values beginning with initial entry training (IET), commonly referred to as basic training, in order to shape soldiers' behavior and decision making in combat and noncombat situations. This mixed methods study addressed the problem of limited empirical research on the effects of U.S. Army IET on soldiers' moral and character development. The purpose was to explore the effects of Military Police (MP) IET on soldiers in training through a mixed methods quantitative and qualitative model. The theoretical framework for this study was based on Rest's four component model (FCM) of moral …

Conference papers

The purpose of this paper is to present the findings of a case study of a large Irish company, Musgrave Group, which has been engaged in sustainability practices and reporting since the late 1990s. In doing so the paper provides an in-depth account firstly of the internal motivations for the company’s engagement with sustainability practices and reporting and secondly of the process through which the sustainability practice gained internal support and began to be integrated into the day to day activities of the company. The case study of the company involved a series of interviews with key participants in the …

The Impact Of Team Member Familiarity On Communication Media Use And Subsequent Project Performance, Priscilla Arling, Hongjiang Xu Jan 2010

The Impact Of Team Member Familiarity On Communication Media Use And Subsequent Project Performance, Priscilla Arling, Hongjiang Xu

Scholarship and Professional Work - Business

This study explores how team member familiarity is related to the communication media used in the completion of projects and how that use impacts project performance. We surveyed 148 university undergraduate students who were enrolled in information systems courses. The students worked on projects in teams of 3 to 4 students. The results suggest that prior collaboration with current te am members, as well as a stude nt’s class year, are related to what communication media are used. The influen ce of team member familiarity and class year varies by the type of media used. We also find that higher …

Mission Conceived Versus Mission Achieved, Paul Lorton Jr Jan 2010

Mission Conceived Versus Mission Achieved, Paul Lorton Jr

Business Analytics and Information Systems

The stated mission of an organization is, in a deductively ordered world, the encapsulation of the timeless focus of that organization from which measureable objectives can be derived to assess how well that organization is progressing toward its destiny. For arts organizations in troubled times, this coupling of mission driven direction and success ought, in theory to be tight. The effort reported here examines the degree to which an Arts organization, in particular those presenting Opera, have stayed their mission dictated course and survived, even succeeded. By looking in depth at several opera companies in the San Francisco Bay area, …

Sustainability Through Profitability: The Triple Bottom Line, Connie I. Reimers-Hild

Kimmel Education and Research Center: Presentations and White Papers

Today’s highly competitive, globalized world requires organizations and businesses to think differently about how they are going to stay in business. Businesses can no longer afford to focus on profits as their sole purpose for existence. Organizations must instead think about the “Triple Bottom Line” and its implications for their ability to grow their brand, customer loyalty and profits.

Leveraging E-Learning In Organisations: Challenges, Benefits And Models For Adoption, Ugo C. Digwo

Ugo Digwo

Abstract This paper is an analytical review of the journey so far on e-Learning adoption by organisations, with a focus on identifying a model-based approach from existing research, and identifiable success factors. Every organisation needs to assess and identify where employee performance sits in their balanced scorecard in order to allocate sufficient resources, planning and strategy development for optimal success. This paper reviews the major trends in e-Learning for organisation while identifying critical elements that should be incorporated into every strategy framework or model developed. It discusses the need to adopt a pre-implementation analysis based on identifying organisational requirements, objectives …

The Hypocrisy Of The Acquiescence Canon, Blair C. Warner Jan 2010

The Hypocrisy Of The Acquiescence Canon, Blair C. Warner

Blair C Warner

The Court applies the acquiescence canon to infer that an agency or judicial statutory interpretation is correct when followed by Congressional inaction. This Article will argue that this practice is based on a number of faulty assumptions. Moreover, the canon is applied inconsistently and creates perverse incentives for the legislature. The Article will then explore the Court’s guidance to lower courts against deriving similar inferences from the denial of certiorari, a similar form of inaction. Drawing parallels between Congress and the Court, and noting the many reasons why conclusions should not be drawn from apparent inactivity, this Article will conclude …

De Coöperatie, Organisatievorm Uit Het Verleden Voor Onze Samenleving Van Morgen?, Wim Van Opstal

Wim Van Opstal

Daarnaast …
