The Commonwealth of Kentucky currently has 5 thoroughbred racing tracks and 3 harness racing tracks (Kentucky Horse Racing Commission 2023 and Mint Julep Louisville 2021). As Table 1 below shows, the industry employees roughly 7,000 people (direct jobs), and these jobs annually support another 2,000 jobs or so throughout the state. These 2,000 jobs are jobs that are provided by the suppliers to the horse race tracks (indirect jobs) and jobs that are created by the spending of the race track employees and the employees of suppliers on food, housing, transportation, and clothing by vendors and retailers throughout the state …

With sports gambling coming to the Commonwealth of Kentucky in September 2023, another competitor to various gaming activities in the state raises the question of how it is doing relative to the others, especially its major competition. As can be seen in the table below, for its first four months of operation, sports gambling in the state brings in almost $900 million and averages around $223 million per month. This average is better than typical monthly lottery sales which come in at around $161 million per month and is far above on and off-track (including simulcasting) racing betting which averages …

Using Dark Triad Personality To Understand And Moderate Jay Customer Behavior In Hospitality, Scott M. Widmier, Prachi Gala, Iason Koufodontis
Association of Marketing Theory and Practice Proceedings 2024
Jay Customers are customers who act in a thoughtless or abusive way, causing problems for the firm, its employees, and other customers. Currently, the only way to identify Jay Customers is by their actions when it is already too late to prevent the negative consequences. This research tested and confirmed the use of Dark Triad personality (Narcissism, Machiavellianism, and Psychopathy) to identify individuals prone to Jay Customer behavior prior to its manifestation. Dark Triad personalities have distinctive characteristics that can be used to identify them along with a growing body of research on prescriptive actions to dissuade their disruptive behaviors. …

Water Misuse In Tourism And Link To Poverty Cycles, Chloe Landry
Water Misuse In Tourism And Link To Poverty Cycles, Chloe Landry
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
Tourism is a key distributor of wealth in many developing countries and yet they still struggle with basic needs like food, adequate shelter, and water. Water poverty is extremely prevalent in already poor locations, and when this situation merges with over-tourism it only gets worse. Tourists consume almost 3-4 times the amount of water than locals. This can be from showers, kitchen appliances, recreational uses, and the drinking supply. Since tourists bring in economic empowerment for these destinations, they are inclined to use however much water they please while the locals suffer. This creates a cycle of poverty that begins …
Introducing Accessibility To Sustainable Tourism, Emma Akian
Introducing Accessibility To Sustainable Tourism, Emma Akian
Student Research Design & Innovation Symposium
Tourism is a universal activity, but not every individual has equal access to travel. This proposal analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of the accessible tourism industry to identify ways of making travel both more accessible and sustainable. It focused on the benefits of incorporating accessibility into the three pillars of sustainable tourism: environment, community, and economy. With an estimated 1.3 billion people living with a significant disability globally, tourism providers are neglecting a significant demographic of travelers with immense influence over tourism revenue. Barriers to accessible tourism include a lack of comprehensive information, poor digital accessibility, and both physical and …

Hegemony in media is the process in which the dominant ideologies of a society are upheld through signs, signifiers, and other imagery. Using “The Crocodile Hunter,” Steve Irwin as an example of a larrikin, media artifacts and biographical remnants of Irwin’s life were assessed to determine if Steve met the criteria to be considered a larrikin. Critical opinions of Steve Irwin, as well as profiles of other famous Australian larrikins, were also used to compare and contrast the ideals of the larrikin. The purpose of this project was to analyze the concept of hegemony and how it relates to larrikinism, …

Examining Sustainable Food Practices In Luxury Gastronomic Restaurants: A Comparison Between Michelin-Starred Restaurants And Luxury Fine Dining Restaurants, Hiran Roy, Thomas Gomes, Vikas Arya
TTRA Canada 2023 Conference
Abstract
Sustainable practices are increasingly promoted in the restaurant sectors. While sustainability in luxury gastronomy restaurants (hereby Michelin-starred and luxury fine dining restaurants) has rarely been explored especially from Vancouver context. Michelin-starred and fine dining restaurants are significant influencers of sustainable food promotion. Therefore, this study explores chefs’ motivations to adopt and promote sustainable food experiences through extrinsic (planet and people) and intrinsic (plate, pleasure, and place) factors. A qualitative approach (semi-structured interview) will be employed to collect data from a sample of Michelin-starred and fine dining restaurants. It is anticipated that this study will be strengthening the existing literature …

In order hopefully to revive attendance at the tracks and/or fuel a resurgence in gambling (either in person or virtually), the last year has seen some recent wagering developments and changes at different horseracing tracks in the United States. At Ellis Park Racing and Gaming (Henderson, Kentucky) in the Evansville, Indiana metro area, penny wagering has been tried since the 2022 season to influence gambling revenues. Meanwhile, starting in 2022 Monmouth Park in New Jersey now offers “fixed odds” wagering as an alternative to parimutuel wagering for patrons who do not like the possible fluctuations in odds before a race …

Raw datasets were sourced from a U.S. based provider of digital gambling payments systems, who has demanded to remain anonymous. The raw datasets cover a time period of 6-years (2015-2021), representing over 300,000 customers and approximately 90 million transaction records. One of these raw datasets is a transaction log file representing customer payment transaction data across a variety of gambling merchants (e.g., online casinos, sportsbooks, and lottery providers). With this article we describe the transaction log file and provide two filtered subsets of the data. The subsets contain 1-year of customer payments transaction records for two gambling merchants: (1) a …
