Gambling With Momentum: How Gambling Cultures Shape Financial Markets, Daniel Mosman

Do people who gamble carry such preferences into their investments? This study looks at various factors which are used to identify countries with a significant gambling population, and seeks to find a relationship with those gambling tendencies and premiums associated with momentum. From historical market data from financial markets in 45 different countries I found stronger evidence of a momentum premium in those countries which have those identifying factors for gambling, than those that do not. In the first essay titled “Monthly Cyclicality in Retail Investors’ Liquidity and Lottery-type Stocks at the Turn of the Month”, we find that the well-documented underperformance of lottery stocks masks a within-month cyclical pattern. Demand for lottery stocks increases at the turn of the month especially in areas whose demographic profile resembles that of the typical lottery-ticket buyers (i.e., gamblers) driving their prices higher at the turn of the month. The betting market for the NHL is investigated using actual betting percentages on favorites and underdogs from real sportsbooks. Sportsbooks do not appear to attempt to price to balance the book as betting percentages are not proportional to set odds. As in the NFL and NBA, bettors are shown to have a strong preference for favorites and road favorites in particular. Simple strategies of betting against significant imbalances toward the favorite are shown to generate positive returns. Although not pricing to balance the book, sportsbooks do not appear to price to exploit known bettor biases in all cases. Clear bettor …
