Personal Income Taxes And The Growth Of Small Firms, Robert Carroll, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Mark Rider, Harvey S. Rosen Oct 2000

Personal Income Taxes And The Growth Of Small Firms, Robert Carroll, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Mark Rider, Harvey S. Rosen

Center for Policy Research

This paper investigates the effect of entrepreneurs’ personal income tax situations on the growth rates of their enterprises. We analyze the personal income tax returns of a large number of sole proprietors before and after the Tax Reform Act of 1986 and determine how the substantial reductions in marginal tax rates associated with that law affected the growth of their firms as measured by gross receipts. We find that individual income taxes exert a statistically and quantitatively significant influence on firm growth rates. Raising the sole proprietor’s tax price (one minus the marginal tax rate) by 10 percent increases receipts …

Developmental Financial Institutions As Catalysts Of Entrepreneurship In Emerging Economies, Gerard George, Ganesh N. Prabhu Jul 2000

Developmental Financial Institutions As Catalysts Of Entrepreneurship In Emerging Economies, Gerard George, Ganesh N. Prabhu

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

With ongoing privatization efforts in emerging economies, governments have supported developmental financial institutions (DFIs) to spur entrepreneurial activity. The authors use stakeholder theory to suggest that postprivatization stakeholders differ in their preference to seek DFI support. The authors then posit that national developmental priorities influence the DFI's willingness to be involved in the governance of the privatized firm, and they discuss implications of DFI involvement for value creation and entrepreneurship in emerging economies.

Achieving Growth Through Corporate Partnerships And Joint Ventures: Will Singapore's Strategic Leap Into The Region Work?, Ravinder K. Zutshi, Wee Liang Tan

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

One of the characteristic features of the East Asian economic development strategy has been the interventionist role of the government in the economic sphere (Amsden 1989; Kwon 1994; Wade 1990; Zutshi and Gibbons 1998). Governments in East Asia have traditionally, worked closely with the private sector. As a result unique business systems embedded in networks and alliances have evolved in countries like Taiwan, Japan, Korea and Singapore (Hamilton and Biggard 1988). Singapore has attempted to extend this model of strategic cooperation beyond its borders into the region. Schein (1996) identifies a number of major development eras in the evolution of …

The Imperative For Energizing The Industrial Transformation In Nigeria., D. Olu Ajakaiye, A. Sesan Ayodele

Bullion

The paper examined the imperative for energizing the industrial transformation. Given the foreign uncompetitive and high cost economic environment, the imperative for energizing the industrial transformation in Nigeria, is to create a conducive environment under which there would be free inflow of foreign investible funds. This may not be possible unless the current industrial environment changes to one whose enabling environment encourages industrial policy instruments that make Nigeria a least cost industrial producer. This suggests something drastic must be done policy-wise to modify the existing high bank-lending rate to make it supportive to the industrialization process. Besides, the depreciation of …

The Internet and the World Wide Web (WWW) trend have captivated people in every corner of the world. The presence of both individuals and businesses on the Internet grows every day. For example, in 1998 businesses' presence on the Internet grew so much that many described 1998 as the ".com" year. But why is it that the Internet is so attractive to all of us? The reason lies in the ease of use of the Internet, the speed of obtaining results, the amount of information available, and the global reach that the Internet has. For all these reasons, the Internet …

The Meaning Of Black Entrepreneurship In Constructing Community, Stacey Sutton Jan 2000

The Meaning Of Black Entrepreneurship In Constructing Community, Stacey Sutton

Trotter Review

The small business sector in the United States has traditionally been viewed as a strong source of economic growth and prosperity, as entrepreneurship epitomizes the quintessential American fantasy of rugged individualism. Given the myths about larger-than-life entrepreneurial heroes, business development has historically been touted as a viable trajectory toward economic and social mobility for immigrant groups and marginalized people. Stories about "great" American businessmen such as John D. Rockefeller, Bill Gates, Steve Jobs among others, often highlight rags-to-riches myths about innumerable possibilities within American capitalism given diligence, fierce competition, and an uncompromising work ethic. The work values of small business …

On The Ellison–Glaeser Geographic Concentration Index, Edward J. Feser Jan 2000

On The Ellison–Glaeser Geographic Concentration Index, Edward J. Feser

Edward J Feser

I use confidential employment data to investigate the empirical properties of a recent industry geographic concentration index (and related index of industry co-agglomeration) proposed by Ellison and Glaeser (1997). The results show that Ellison and Glaeser’s theoretical finding that their concentration measures are robust to differences in the level of spatial aggregation in the underlying employment data does not generally hold in practice. This implies that sensitivity testing for alternative spatial units should accompany any analysis with the concentration measures.

Are The Common Myths Of Entrepreneurship All That Common? A Test Of Entrepreneurs And Non-Entrepreneurs, Kevin W. Sightler Jan 2000

Are The Common Myths Of Entrepreneurship All That Common? A Test Of Entrepreneurs And Non-Entrepreneurs, Kevin W. Sightler

Faculty and Research Publications

It has been suggested that there is general misunderstanding in the business and academic communities as to the definition, form, and substance of entrepreneurship. Common myths of entrepreneurship have been advanced such as "Entrepreneurship involves starting and running a small business" and "Entrepreneurship requires a lot of money." A sample of 163 subjects revealed overall disagreement with the stated myths. Evidence supported a hypothesized divergence of opinion about entrepreneurship myths between entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs, but there was no difference of opinion between less successful and more successful entrepreneurs. Implications of the findings are discussed.

The Influence Of Cognitive Make-Up On New Venture Success, Matthew H. Roy, B. Elango Jan 2000

The Influence Of Cognitive Make-Up On New Venture Success, Matthew H. Roy, B. Elango

WCBT Faculty Publications

One of the major challenges in the development of a new venture is the need for different thinking styles over time. The growing body of research on entrepreneurship has largely ignored the influence of cognition during the evolution of the new venture. In this paper, we develop a conceptual model which shows how cognitive make-up may influence the success of the new venture growth process. This line of inquiry may prove fruitful in explaining why many creative ideas and once successful ventures fail to succeed. Also, matching task demands and thinking styles should increase entrepreneurial satisfaction and the chances of …
