World Series Recap, Richard C. Crepeau
World Series Recap, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
Now that the rain that lasted for forty hours and forty minutes has ended, a World Series winner has been determined, and Commissioner Selig has disembarked from his Ark, I want to say a few things about the series itself, as well as take a look at some of the “solutions” to the problems raised by the circumstances of Game Five.

The Rays' Makeover, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The success of the Tampa Bay Rays may seem to be quite remarkable to the baseball world, but it can only be fully appreciated if you have some idea of how truly dreadful this team and this franchise has been over the past decade. Everything associated with or touched by it was a disaster on a scale that is difficult to wrap your mind around.

The Cubs' Postseason Exit, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It has been a brutal week as Americans have watched helplessly as the stock market went into freefall. Those with 401K’s tried to joke about not retiring until they’re in their eighties. Pensions were drying up. Bailout and rescue plans were passed without any impact. No one really seemed to have any idea of how to stop the hemorrhaging. The entire country was beginning to resemble a deer caught in the headlights.

This is Old Dominion University's ninth annual State of the Region report. While it represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, the report does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. The report maintains the goal of stimulating thought and discussion that ultimately will make Hampton Roads an even better place to live. We are proud of our region's many successes, but realize that it is possible to improve our performance. In order to do so, we must have accurate information about "where we are" and a …

Baseball's September And Postseason, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It is difficult to think of any sport that could provide more than baseball has delivered over the past six months. Sure fire winners have tanked. Big payroll teams have missed the playoffs. Small payroll teams have gone to the wire and beyond. Improbable scenarios driven by individual stars have developed over the last six weeks in Milwaukee and Los Angeles. A dismal team playing in a dismal ballpark has gone from last to first passing the two most powerful teams in the American League. Two ballparks with substantial histories in New York have closed as both of their occupants …

Lin Daiyu--An Unyielding Girl In A Stifling Society, Haiwang Yuan
DLPS Faculty Publications
Lin Daiyu is a famous Chinese young woman created by one of the four classic Chinese novels titled A Dream of the Red Mansions. The loss of her love and life was the result of a society where human choices were suppressed. Her story shows that in a society full of intrigues and corruption, a girl as pure and naive as her could never survive.

Chinese Ethnicities And Their Culture: An Overview, Haiwang Yuan
Chinese Ethnicities And Their Culture: An Overview, Haiwang Yuan
DLPS Faculty Publications
China, the most populous country in the world, is also a nation of great diversity. In addition to the majority population of Han Chinese, there are some 55 officially recognized national minorities--including Tibetan, Mongol, Manchu, Zhuang, Dai, and Gaoshan. The folklore of these minorities is often obscure and difficult to find in the English-speaking world, as is information about the people, their cultural histories, and their traditional customs. This book fills a gap by offering more than 50 representative folktales from China's minorities, as well as background information on each of the ethnic groups.
The Beijing Olympics, Richard C. Crepeau
The Beijing Olympics, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
The Olympics in Beijing has been a great disappointment. No one has collapsed into a coughing fit from the air pollution. This seemed a certainty from all the reports leading up to the opening of what are so quaintly termed “the games.” The American cyclists who arrived in the Beijing Airport wearing face masks seemed to have made it through the opening ceremonies without contracting “black lung” or suffering a terminal case of “ring around the collar.” I feel I have been let down yet again by the press.
