A Community Of Practice For Chinese Ngos, Reza Hasmath, Jennifer Yj Hsu Jan 2020

A Community Of Practice For Chinese Ngos, Reza Hasmath, Jennifer Yj Hsu

Reza Hasmath

A community of practice represents an important resource for the sharing of sector-specific knowledge. It is a mechanism for Chinese NGOs to learn from each other, and collaborate. Drawing upon original data elicited from over 100 NGOs, this article examines the organizational capacity for Chinese NGOs to cultivate a mature community of practice. We find that there are inherent headwinds that Chinese NGOs will have to navigate to accomplish this goal. On the one hand, the majority of NGOs in our sample do not see themselves as part of a community of experts, which presents a huge challenge for the …

Produkt-Orientierte Übersetzung: Weg Von Der Insel, Uwe Muegge Apr 2015

Produkt-Orientierte Übersetzung: Weg Von Der Insel, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Product-Centric Translation: What It Is And How Best To Handle It, Uwe Muegge Jan 2015

Product-Centric Translation: What It Is And How Best To Handle It, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Unlike with “general” technical translations, where the text stands on its own, in product-centric translation projects there is a direct link between the source text and a product or service.

Work Made For Hire – Analyzing The Multifactor Balancing Test, Ryan G. Vacca Jan 2015

Work Made For Hire – Analyzing The Multifactor Balancing Test, Ryan G. Vacca

Ryan G. Vacca

Authorship, and hence, initial ownership of copyrighted works is oftentimes controlled by the 1976 Copyright Act’s work made for hire doctrine. This doctrine states that works created by employees within the scope of their employment result in the employer owning the copyright. One key determination in this analysis is whether the hired party is an employee or independent contractor. In 1989, the U.S. Supreme Court, in CCNV v. Reid, answered the question of how employees are distinguished from independent contractors by setting forth a list of factors courts should consider. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court did not give further guidance on …

The Cost Of A Telegram: The Evolution Of The International Regulation Of The Telegraph., Alan J. Richardson Jan 2015

The Cost Of A Telegram: The Evolution Of The International Regulation Of The Telegraph., Alan J. Richardson

Alan J Richardson

The telegraph was the first practical use of electricity. It revolutionized commercial communication and facilitated the globalization of business. As the telegraph developed as a medium of international communication, regulation was needed to overcome administrative and technical issues, and, importantly, to establish accounting procedures for the distribution of the revenue to multiple national partners. This paper traces the evolution of revenue allocation models through three international organizations that ultimately lead to the creation of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in 1932. The shifts in revenue allocation methods are consistent with a shift in focus of regulation from growth to efficiency …

How Linkedin Helped Me Land A Vp Position When I Wasn't Even Looking, Uwe Muegge

Finding a new job can be very time-consuming – or not, especially when you let the new job find you! I recently accepted the position of Vice President of Strategic Technology Solutions at OmniLingua, a translation and localization services company. At the time I received the the company owner's InMail, I was not even looking for a new job! Unbeknownst to me, the hiring process had started after my future employer visited my LinkedIn profile page.

Teaching Translation Technology In The 21st Century, Uwe Muegge Sep 2014

Teaching Translation Technology In The 21st Century, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

The author's definition of 'technical translation' is pragmatic: Technical translation differs from literary translation in that in a technical translation project, all texts are linked with a product. The product-centric nature of technical translation projects requires that technical translation projects are processed in a translation memory system to ensure terminological and stylistic consistency, among other things.

Is Food Marketing Making Us Fat? Fat Cats Vs Dogmatists., Stephen S. Holden Jul 2014

Is Food Marketing Making Us Fat? Fat Cats Vs Dogmatists., Stephen S. Holden

Stephen S Holden

For many, it seems obvious that food marketing is making us fat. The anger and outrage that was once evoked by tobacco companies is now being repackaged and aimed at ‘Big Food’ (Hennessy, 2014). But is it justified, is food marketing the cause of obesity? And in any case, does outrage and dogmatism help solve the problem? This paper suggests that blaming the marketers, both Big Food and "lazy leisure", is a disputable claim, and dangerously shifts responsibility from individuals to external agents.

Termwiki Pro: A Terminology Management System Designed From The Ground Up For Web-Enabled Collaboration, Uwe Muegge Jun 2014

Termwiki Pro: A Terminology Management System Designed From The Ground Up For Web-Enabled Collaboration, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

A TaaS-based terminology management system, such as CSOFT’s TermWiki Pro, stores terminology information in a central location in the cloud, allowing all content stakeholders such as editors, validators, translators, and reviewers to access the same set of data. Any changes made to a term are immediately available for others to use in their own projects. Managing terms from inception to validation to translation and beyond typically involves many contributors – including terminology stakeholders on the client side. Just sending notifications to terminology stakeholders and keeping them all on the same page can take up a lot of project management time. …

The Myth Of The Early Aviation Patent Hold-Up – How A U.S. Government Monopsony Commandeered Pioneer Airplane Patents, Ron D. Katznelson, John Howells Mar 2014

The Myth Of The Early Aviation Patent Hold-Up – How A U.S. Government Monopsony Commandeered Pioneer Airplane Patents, Ron D. Katznelson, John Howells

Ron D. Katznelson

The prevailing historical accounts of the formation of the U.S. aircraft “patent pool” in 1917 assume the U.S. Government necessarily intervened to alleviate a patent hold-up among private aircraft manufacturers. We show these accounts to be inconsistent with the historical facts. We show that despite the existence of basic aircraft patents, aircraft manufacturers faced no patent barriers in the market dominated by Government demand. We show that the notion of the aircraft patent hold-up is a myth created by Government officials and used to persuade Congress to authorize eminent domain condemnation of basic aircraft patents. Government officials used the threat …

Teaching Localization: 6 Practices That Make A Difference (Part Ii), Uwe Muegge Feb 2014

Teaching Localization: 6 Practices That Make A Difference (Part Ii), Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Translation memory (TM) systems have become commonplace in today’s translation courses – sometimes for the wrong reasons. If students are told that the only reason for using a translation memory is to leverage previous translations, these students will not use a TM system for non-repetitive texts. That teaching approach might also be frustrating for students who start with an empty translation memory, as these students may not get any immediate benefit from using TM technology. If, however, students are introduced to the translation memory as a quality assurance tool, the return on investment is instant.

The Great Leap Forward That Never Was, Uwe Muegge Jan 2014

The Great Leap Forward That Never Was, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Ten years ago, machine translation (MT) was very much a niche technology for translation professionals. MT tools were expensive, supported only a small number of language pairs, and did not play nice with many standard translation tools. Today, MT is available either for free or at very low cost, in thousands of language combinations, and many translation memory systems offer integrated MT functionality. In other words, MT has evolved by leaps and bounds. As the number of translation professionals who post-edit raw MT has increased dramatically over the past 10 years, the big question is whether developments in post-editing have …

Governing Knowledge For Development: Knowledge Clusters In Brunei Darussalam And Malaysia, Hans-Dieter Evers Jan 2014

Governing Knowledge For Development: Knowledge Clusters In Brunei Darussalam And Malaysia, Hans-Dieter Evers

Hans-Dieter Evers

With the dwindling of natural resources, like oil and gas, even resource-rich countries like Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia have to re-adjust their development strategies. Governing knowledge for development (K4D) is seen as a way out of the dilemma of reduced revenues from natural resources. This paper analyses the attempts to create knowledge clusters as a strategy to move Brunei and Malaysia towards knowledge-based economies. Our study shows that several knowledge clusters have already been established in Peninsular Malaysia and are starting to emerge in Brunei Darussalam. The paper is structured as follows: the first section explains the dangers of falling …

An Unusual Empirical Pattern In An Indigenous Setting: Cooperative Entrepreneurship Among Brazil Nut (Bertholletia Excelsa) Harvesters, Leo Paul Dana, Julie Mallet

Leo- Paul Dana

The rainforest, as a symbol of life and diversity, is currently under the spotlight; its conservation is a challenge. Although for centuries indigenous people developed sustainable activities within that environment, there is concern today about how to develop viable activities that lead to productive entrepreneurship whilst preserving natural capital. This article investigates best practices of entrepreneurs who cooperate in an organisation, leading to sustainable development. Their experience may inspire others to draw new perspectives.

Implementing A Controlled Language Is Now Cheaper And Easier Than Ever, Uwe Muegge Oct 2013

Implementing A Controlled Language Is Now Cheaper And Easier Than Ever, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

The controlled language (CL) model is not new: Caterpillar Fundamental English was rolled-out in 1972, and many other enterprise- and a few industry-level controlled languages followed since then. What is new is the fact that now complete commercial rule sets and powerful CL tools are available for free, making controlled language authoring attractive for even the smallest organizations.

Urban Property Development In Malaysia: The Impact Of Chinese And Malay Conceptions Of Space, Hans-Dieter Evers Sep 2013

Urban Property Development In Malaysia: The Impact Of Chinese And Malay Conceptions Of Space, Hans-Dieter Evers

Hans-Dieter Evers

In the past 30 years Peninsular Malaysia has undergone rapid urbanization from 34% urban population in 1980 to 71% in 2010. This has created an unprecedented building boom, leading to the rise of large construction companies. This chapter is going to argue that next to the political economy of ethnicity the cultural conceptions of space will have a decisive impact on the process of urbanization. The physical city-scape of Malaysian urban areas in turn will determine the everyday life and the employment opportunities of all Malaysians.

Voice Without Say: Why Capital-Managed Firms Aren’T (Genuinely) Participatory, Justin Schwartz Aug 2013

Voice Without Say: Why Capital-Managed Firms Aren’T (Genuinely) Participatory, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Why are most capitalist enterprises of any size organized as authoritarian bureaucracies rather than incorporating genuine employee participation that would give the workers real authority? Even firms with employee participation programs leave virtually all decision-making power in the hands of management. The standard answer is that hierarchy is more economically efficient than any sort of genuine participation, so that participatory firms would be less productive and lose out to more traditional competitors. This answer is indefensible. After surveying the history, legal status, and varieties of employee participation, I examine and reject as question-begging the argument that the rarity of genuine …
