La Lengua Gallega En La Diáspora Latinoamericana: La Tensión Entre Nacionalismo Y Sentimentalismo Y Sus Efectos En El Habla, Luke A. Bishop

Spanish Education In Montana, Bret Charlton

Languages and Literature Undergraduate Student Works

Importance of Spanish Education in Montana

Currently, in the United States, Spanish speaking English language learners are the largest growing population. This includes large numbers of families and individuals from El Salvador, Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Mexico, most of whom reside in Texas, California, Arizona, Florida, and New Jersey. So why is Spanish education important in Montana? Most students taking Spanish classes in high school will take the recommended two years and never look back. With this in mind, it is the responsibility of the teacher to help form well-rounded, respectful individuals with the time they have.

Learning another language ...

Vocalización O Desconsonantización, Orlando Alba

All Faculty Publications

Providing Social Services To Latino Immigrants - A Theological Perspective, Olivia Mahon Apr 2019

Providing Social Services To Latino Immigrants - A Theological Perspective, Olivia Mahon

Carroll College Student Undergraduate Research Festival

Each year, thousands of people immigrate to the United States, and many are from various Latin American countries. The motivation for leaving their home is a result of economic burdens, violence, corruption and much more. For many, the experience of immigration is one filled with challenges and dire circumstances. Many families arrive in the United States with nothing. These communities are in need of support, often provided by social workers. However the diverse backgrounds and the extensive set of challenges these people face hinder social workers’ abilities to provide the necessary services. The present research looks at the approach of ...

A Pilgrim’S Progress For The Digital, Post-Human(Ist) Age?: Social And Religious Allegory In Russell Banks’S Lost Memory Of Skin, David J. Buehrer Dr.

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

In Lost Memory of Skin (2011), his twelfth novel, Russell Banks continues his exploration of the dark underbelly of American society—in this instance, the moral wilderness of a group of convicted sex offenders exiled to living beneath a concrete causeway in the south Florida city of Calusa, a fictionalized Miami. Banks, who has long been “our premier chronicler of the doomed and forgotten American male” (Schulman 8), focuses in Lost on a twenty-two-year-old parolee referred to throughout only as “The Kid.” While guilty and duly convicted of propositioning an underage girl online for sex, The Kid is still presented ...

Realismo Y Exasperación: Un Estudio De Los Personajes Femeninos En La Pata De La Sota Y La Nona De Roberto Cossa, Mariana Pensa

South East Coastal Conference on Languages & Literatures (SECCLL)

How To Attract African American College Students To Study Spanish: A Model For Virginia State University, Erika M. Neal

Virginias Collegiate Honors Council Conference

Being culturally aware and able to communicate with people from different regions of the world is one of the most critical skills a student of color can obtain during their educational career. Not only will a student’s perspective of the world be altered, but their market value will skyrocket by 5-10% on average according to Forbes. Being bilingual or multilingual is a skill that can be applied to any career field in today’s society. Unfortunately, many African American students have had little to no exposure to foreign languages and cultures specifically Spanish. Even for those who have had ...

Developing And Validating A Methodology For Crowdsourcing L2 Speech Ratings In Amazon Mechanical Turk, Charles Nagle Jan 2019

Developing And Validating A Methodology For Crowdsourcing L2 Speech Ratings In Amazon Mechanical Turk, Charles Nagle

World Languages and Cultures Publications

Researchers have increasingly turned to Amazon Mechanical Turk (AMT) to crowdsource speech data, predominantly in English. Although AMT and similar platforms are well positioned to enhance the state of the art in L2 research, it is unclear if crowdsourced L2 speech ratings are reliable, particularly in languages other than English. The present study describes the development and deployment of an AMT task to crowdsource comprehensibility, fluency, and accentedness ratings for L2 Spanish speech samples. Fifty-four AMT workers who were native Spanish speakers from 11 countries participated in the ratings. Intraclass correlation coefficients were used to estimate group-level interrater reliability, and ...

Review: Released Letters. Captivity, Writing And Subjectivity In The Mediterranean Of The Spanish Imperial Era By Ana Rodríguez-Rodríguez, Julia Domínguez Jan 2019

Review: Released Letters. Captivity, Writing And Subjectivity In The Mediterranean Of The Spanish Imperial Era By Ana Rodríguez-Rodríguez, Julia Domínguez

Julia Domínguez

Letras liberadas is a complementary work, easy to read, for all those interested in the Spanish-Muslim confrontation in the western Mediterranean since the late sixteenth century and throughout the seventeenth century. The book is of special interest for text scholars who recreate the experiences of Spanish men and women, direct victims of that conflict, who were turned into captives and transferred to Muslim territory, specifically to Algiers and Constantinople. The author makes clear from the beginning that she does not intend to reconstruct with her analysis the history of Spanish captivity, but to analyze the textual representation product of that ...

Toward A Dynamic View Of Second Language Comprehensibility, Charles Nagle, Pavel Trofimovich, Annie Bergeron Jan 2019

Toward A Dynamic View Of Second Language Comprehensibility, Charles Nagle, Pavel Trofimovich, Annie Bergeron

World Languages and Cultures Publications

This study took a dynamic approach to second language (L2) comprehensibility, examining how listeners construct comprehensibility profiles for L2 Spanish speakers during the listening task and what features enhance or diminish comprehensibility. Listeners were 24 native Spanish speakers who evaluated 2–5 minute audio clips recorded by three university-level L2 Spanish speakers responding to two prompts. Listeners rated comprehensibility dynamically, using Idiodynamic Software to upgrade or downgrade comprehensibility over the course of the listening task. Dynamic ratings for one audio clip were video-captured for stimulated recall, and listeners were interviewed to understand which aspects of L2 speech were associated with ...

Project-Based Learning For Span 316e: Criminal Justice Spanish, Carmen Jany

Q2S Enhancing Pedagogy

Project-based Learning for Span 316E

For this course, I developed project-based learning starting with an open-ended question: Are Spanish language skills and cultural knowledge important for First Responders, Law Enforcement, and Prison Personnel to interact successfully with the Latino Population in Southern California? The discussion then led to the identification of important areas of knowledge (linguistic and cultural) for practitioners in Criminal Justice who engage with the Latino Population. Discussions relied on students’ everyday experiences and personal experiences. Moreover, examples from TV and Cinema were used. Students were then asked to identify a topic of interest and were, based on ...

La Comunicación Lingüística En Español Y Sus Barreras En El Sistema De Salud De Los Estados Unidos, David Sánchez-Jiménez

Publications and Research

Publications and Research

The main objective of this research is to discover which rhetorical functions were used in the Master´s thesis writing written by eight (8) American and eight (8) Spanish postgraduates in their na-tive language. A computerized tex-tual analysis of the rhetorical func-tion of citation was used to study this phenomenon (Petrić, 2007). The results obtained from the re-search showed that the different cultural conventions in the thesis writing indicate that when com-pared with native Spanish writers, the American writers of English use the highest number of cita-tions, and write a relatively longer Introduction and Conclusion parts. On the other hand ...

Publications and Research

Gendered Identity And Investment In Language Learning: A Case Study Of Heritage Spanish Speakers, Farah Ali Oct 2018

Gendered Identity And Investment In Language Learning: A Case Study Of Heritage Spanish Speakers, Farah Ali

Friday Forum

Much of the existing research in second and heritage language acquisition (S/HLA) takes a traditional approach of focusing on the cognitive processes involved in S/HLA, as well as the resulting outcomes. A relatively recent approach that has emerged in S/HLA scholarship, however, relates the learner to the social world in terms of how sociocultural contexts may shape an individual’s language learning experiences and their personal investment in the process. This emergent approach also challenges traditional categorical conceptions of identity, positing that it is dynamic, fluid, constructed, and negotiated in social contexts. Following this approach, my objective ...

About this Project

In the fall of 2018, 14 of the families and 32 students from two first-year seminars, Crossing Borders: Immigration, Identity, and Development and Immigrant Stories, worked together to create this cookbook. Families submitted their favorite dishes and then invited students to their homes to demonstrate the preparation. As they cooked and ate together, students recorded the steps to make the recipe and listened as connections between food, memory, family, migration, traditions, and religion emerged.

Harvesting Memory, Preserving Home: A Cookbook of the Painted Turtle Farm is the product of this undertaking. In it, we offer the collection ...

Social Networks, Political Discourse And Polarization During The 2017 Catalan Elections, Rafael Monroig Aug 2018

Social Networks, Political Discourse And Polarization During The 2017 Catalan Elections, Rafael Monroig

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

This thesis investigates the political process in Spain and Catalonia during the Catalan election in December 2017. This regional election was unusual because of the independence process in Catalonia and its repression. Two parties, Ciudadanos (anti-independence) and Podemos (ambiguous position) and their leaders’ activity in Twitter was analyzed. It was explored from three perspectives: social networks, lexical and emotional discourse and ideological polarization. Firstly, social networks were used to see the properties of the support communities of both parties. Interestingly unlike Ps, Ciudadanos’ (Cs) metrics of cohesion showed that political communities of this party in Spain and Catalonia were remarkably ...
