Still often viewed as an action belonging solely to missionary societies, Catholic understanding of evangelization is lacking. Refusal to evangelize is refusal to act as a symbolic reality of Christ in the world, i.e. the Mystical body of Christ - the Church. Using contemporary social and art theory, with particular emphasis on the notion of performative, this paper examines the historical and theological context of a unique social and ecclesial phenomenon in 4th century Syria—the Sons and Daughters of the Covenant. By observing these committed laity as a ‘living performance,’ an exploration of the identity of the faithful, both severally and as a community, may be undertaken.
