Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The history of Protestant mission began when Korean people were suffering under Japanese colonial rule. The Bible was translated into Korean in Manchuria and Japan and following the first missionary Horace N. Allen (U.S. Korea missionary, 1884-1890) many Western missionaries began to arrive in Korea. As churches were built the need for Korean ministers necessitated establishment of theological seminaries and teaching of homiletics. History of preaching thus began. Charles A. Clark (U.S. Korea missionary, 1902-1948), who became the father of homiletics in Korea, taught the homiletic theories he studied earlier and his influence is still felt in Korea today. The …

Native Theological Training Within Canadian Evangelicalism: Three Case Studies, Graham Gibson

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis explores the attitudes of EuroCanadian. The Impact Of Archbishop Oscar Romero's Alliance With The Struggle For Liberation Of The Salvadoran People: A Discussion Of Church-State Relations (El Salvador), Helen-May Eaton

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Archbishop Oscar Romero symbolizes, for many Salvadorans more than a decade after his death, the spirit of a struggle to liberate the poor and powerless from the repression of the privileged few who wield social, economic and political power in El Salvador.

As archbishop, Romero shifted the church’s emphasis from one of church-state complicity to a church intent on defending its poor. Traditionally, the church had been aligned with the aims and methods of the ruling families of El Salvador. Romero found this alliance unacceptable in light of the socio-political reality that found the majority of Salvadorans being forced to …

The Scarboro Foreign Mission Society, 1955-1968: The Implications Of The Social Dimensions Of Faith For A Missionary Endeavour, Erin Frances Phillips

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

During the late fifties the Scarboro Foreign Mission Society worked in missions in Latin America, the British Caribbean, and Asia. Their work was primarily parish work. They gave religious instruction, administered the sacraments, and cared for the pastoral needs of their parishoners. In countries with sizeable non-Catholic populations they tried various means to attract people to the Church. In countries with Catholic majorities they experimented with a variety of methods for providing the sacraments and instruction to large numbers of people. Occasionally they became involved in running co-operatives; the reasons they gave for this work emphasized its spiritual benefits.
