Exploring The Medieval Frontier: The Reconquista, Alex Wolfe
Exploring The Medieval Frontier: The Reconquista, Alex Wolfe
Scholar Week 2016 - present
This project focuses on material history, the study of objects and their role in history, and deriving meaning from artifacts in order to synthesize an applied historical thesis.
The objects studied in this research project are of particular importance to the study of the Reconquista, a unique frontier conflict in the Iberian Peninsula between Christians and Muslims that lasted from the eighth through fifteenth centuries.
The artifacts brought together in this digital exhibit bring into material focus the visible exchanges and borrowings between Christians and Muslims across the frontier of the Reconquista. In their material relationship, they demonstrate the unique …

Adventist Human-Subject Researchers Association
In recent years, the world has witnessed a resounding revolution in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), and today there is no field where AI is not employed. These institutions have a major role in developing policies, curricula, and strategies to keep pace with the modern artificial revolution. The aim of this research is to find out how current developments in this eld are likely to impact education in the future, and how such developments in Edtech might impact on future graduates, colleges, universities, societies, and cultures.
The Uighur Genocide, Karlee Gordon
The Uighur Genocide, Karlee Gordon
Showcase of Osprey Advancements in Research and Scholarship (SOARS)
Honorable Mention Winner
International Research Symposium Exhibitor and Project of Merit Award Tensions have surfaced between the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and their Muslim ethnic minority, the Uighur, as the CCP attempts to deconstruct their religious identity in exchange for a nationalist allegiance. Militarization of Uighur land, anti-Muslim legislation and detainment of the Uighur into re-education camps reveal the extremes the CCP will take to eliminate the Uighur’s influence. The CCP’s harsh measures bring to question the extent the authoritative regime will allow its population religious freedoms. As Chinese history, recent legislation, and Uighur socialization is analyzed, theories are presented …
Minorities In Islam, Sara Patterson
Minorities In Islam, Sara Patterson
Scholars Day Conference
I began my research on Islam by talking to my childhood friend, Gizman Baraso, about her Muslim faith. From listening to her describe her own personal experience, I was able to determine the direction I wanted to take with my research. Gizman is a female Ethiopian Sunni Muslim; she feels that much of her perspective on life is affected by being a triple minority, and she has noticed ways that the Muslim religious community responds to her gender and race. In this essay, I will use information from Gizman’s story and incorporate insight from additional sources to better understand and …
The Right To Religious Freedom And Its Political Significance: Catholic And Islamic Approaches, Matthew Bagot
The Right To Religious Freedom And Its Political Significance: Catholic And Islamic Approaches, Matthew Bagot
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
It is generally agreed that the Catholic Church formally committed itself to modern human rights in 1963 as a result of Pope John XXIII’s encyclical, Pacem in Terris. But it was the more specific historical development regarding the right to religious freedom that took place two years later at the Second Vatican Council, which really prompted global change. As Samuel Huntington wrote, the Church’s commitment to religious liberty on the part of all persons (and to the liberty of non-religious persons) had an extraordinary impact on democracy movements around the world. Indeed, Huntington referred to these movements as a “Catholic …

Worldview, Aspirations, Folkways, And Perceptions Of Folk Muslims: Promising Pathways For Adventist Missions, Jiamah Adil
Adventist Human-Subject Researchers Association
An ethnography conducted in a Muslim community reveals that the incarnational example of Jesus Christ may be relevant in Muslim ministry as the missionary participates in people’s lives and engages them in meaningful conversations. Such approach opens up gospel avenues and wonderful opportunities for Muslims to know about the authentic Adventist faith and lifestyle.
The Dignity Of The Human Person: Catholic And Islamic Approaches To Human Rights, Matthew Bagot
The Dignity Of The Human Person: Catholic And Islamic Approaches To Human Rights, Matthew Bagot
Biennial Conference: The Social Practice of Human Rights
At the beginning of The Global Face of Public Faith, David Hollenbach, S.J., challenges the world’s religious communities to relate their distinctive visions of the good human life with the growing awareness that all persons are linked in a web of global interdependence. Hollenbach’s work is founded on an understanding of the common good that he discerns at Vatican II and calls “dialogic universalism.” It is universal because humans are sufficiently alike when it comes to the requirements for their respective goods; it is dialogic because cultural differences necessitate deep intellectual engagement across traditions if they are to be …

The Divine Viscera: Medicine And Religion In The Islamic Golden Age, Isabella A. Pua
The Divine Viscera: Medicine And Religion In The Islamic Golden Age, Isabella A. Pua
Young Historians Conference
Islamic medicine is largely ignored in Western tradition, but in an era when Western European medical practice relied more on mysticism than science and had lost the advances made by Classical Greece, the Islamic Empire entered a golden age of scientific thought. The impetus for the Golden Age medicine that developed can be partially attributed to the Islamic religion itself. This paper explores the role of Islam as both a unifying force and a set of broad cultural values in creating that atmosphere that allowed for the study of medicine, within the context of the scientific-religious duality that characterized discovery …
