Utopia In The Midst Of Oppression? A Reconsideration Of Guaraní/Jesuit Communities In Seventeenth And Eighteenth Century Paraguay, Thomas W. O'Brien Dec 2004

Utopia In The Midst Of Oppression? A Reconsideration Of Guaraní/Jesuit Communities In Seventeenth And Eighteenth Century Paraguay, Thomas W. O'Brien

Thomas W O'Brien

This essay is an examination of the 17th–18th century Guaraní/Jesuit communities in Paraguay, which were exalted as utopias by countless witnesses. These authors have stressed the long periods of peaceful coexistence, the rich and fruitful syncretistic melding cultures, the successful and bountiful economic life, and the relative justice. Nevertheless, controversy has always marked these communities because many believe that the Jesuit/Guaraní missions are best understood as integral to the larger oppressive imposition of European polity and culture. These authors stress evidence of condescending paternalism, structural inequality, restricted freedom of choice, and the erosion of a pristine Guaraní culture. This essay …

A Place Of Mercy: Finding God On The Street, Thomas O'Brien

Thomas W O'Brien

A Place of Mercy: Finding God on the Street What is it? • A series of roughly chronological snapshots reflecting theologically on experiences at the House of Mercy in Rochester, NY. The House of Mercy itself is an outreach to the homeless and poor in a medium-sized, rust-belt city. They engage in food distribution, emergency housing, advocacy and assistance with welfare, utility companies, landlords, chemical dependency, medical problems, veteran benefits etc. It was founded by Sr. Grace Miller who spontaneously began handing out surplus food to people out of the back of her car in 1985. She eventually received funding …

Answering The Earthquake, Thomas G. Plante Oct 2004

Answering The Earthquake, Thomas G. Plante

Psychology

During the past several years, the American Catholic Church has suffered an enormous earthquake due to the child sexual abuse crisis that was initially reported on January 6, 2002 by the Boston Globe Spotlight Team. Although the sexual abuse of children by priests had been in the news many times before, the recent case in Boston 14 Conversations resulted in perhaps the largest earthquake ever in the American Catholic Church. While the epicenter of the quake was centered in Boston, there were many significant aftershocks felt across the land. Sadly, Jesuits and Jesuit universities were not immune from the recent …

Resistance To Structural Adjustment Policies, Laura Stivers Aug 2004

Resistance To Structural Adjustment Policies, Laura Stivers

Laura Stivers

Protestantism, at its best, grounds both its religious and its social critique in the faith of the prophets and the life and teachings of Jesus Christ as understood and lived by the church. Its teachings and desired practice stand in start contrast to complacent religion that seems to be at ease with imperial greed, domination, and violence. Resistance and Theological Ethics collects the edited and updated essays that emerged from the meeting of the Theological Educators for Presbyterian Social Witness in Geneva, Switzerland and southern France in 1999. Inspired there by the sixteenth century forces of renewal unleashed through resistance …

The Holocaust And The Search For Forgiveness: An Invitation To The Society Of Jesus?, James Bernauer Jul 2004

The Holocaust And The Search For Forgiveness: An Invitation To The Society Of Jesus?, James Bernauer

Blumen Collection: Articles

Pope John Paul II has led the Church into a new era in its relationship with the Jewish Community. Progress rests on painstaking efforts to uncover the truth, identify failures where they exist, and humbly seek forgiveness. Recent scholarship presents a complex picture in Europe both before and immediately after the Second World War, both in the local churches and at the Vatican. Such candor prompts a question: Should the Society of Jesus, serving its own role in the universal Church, review its own history during this dark period, and where necessary, join in the Church’s search for forgiveness?

The Sexual Abuse Crisis In The Roman Catholic Church: What Psychologists And Counselors Should Know, Thomas G. Plante, Courtney Daniels May 2004

The Sexual Abuse Crisis In The Roman Catholic Church: What Psychologists And Counselors Should Know, Thomas G. Plante, Courtney Daniels

Psychology

Recent events regarding child sexual abuse committed by Roman Catholic priests in the Archdiocese of Boston and elsewhere have yet again resulted in a tremendous amount of media attention and frenzy regarding this topic. During 2002 alone, approximately 300 American Catholic priests, including several bishops, were accused of child sexual abuse. Many were forced to resign their positions while others were prosecuted and went to prison. Curiously, there still exist many myths and misperceptions about priests who sexually abuse children and their victims. Since psychologists and other mental health professionals are likely to interact with many who have been impacted …

"The Violence Of 'Religion': Examining A Prevalent Myth", William T. Cavanaugh Feb 2004

"The Violence Of 'Religion': Examining A Prevalent Myth", William T. Cavanaugh

William T. Cavanaugh

This essay examines arguments that religion is prone to violence and finds them incoherent. They are incoherent because they can find no way consistently to differentiate the religious from the secular. After exposing the arbitrariness of the arguments, the essay goes on to examine why such arguments are so common. The hypothesis put forward is that such arguments are so prevalent because, while they delegitimate certain kinds of violence, they legitimate other kinds of violence, namely, violence done in the name of secular, Western states and ideals. Such arguments sanction a putative dichotomy between non-Western, especially Muslim, forms of culture …

What Do You Mean “Truth Through Personality”? The Phillips Brooks Definition Of Preaching In Historical Context, Austin B. Tucker Jan 2004

What Do You Mean “Truth Through Personality”? The Phillips Brooks Definition Of Preaching In Historical Context, Austin B. Tucker

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

Applying historical-grammatical hermeneutics to the Brooks definition of preaching as truth through personality helps us hear Brooks say that the sum of all truth is Christ. His truth does not stand in indifference to his person as some theologians insisted. By personality Brooks stressed not only the divine person of Christ but also the preacher” character. The contemporary usage of both words, the eight lectures in context, and the colorful history of the 1870” tell the story.

Geza Vermes And The Third Quest For The Historical Jesus: A Review Essay On ‘Jesus In His Jewish Context’, Gary R. Habermas Jan 2004

Geza Vermes And The Third Quest For The Historical Jesus: A Review Essay On ‘Jesus In His Jewish Context’, Gary R. Habermas

Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary (1973-2015)

During the last few decades, the subject of the historical Jesus has once again moved into the center of scholarly studies among New Testament historians, exegetes, and theologians. In stark contrast to the movements of the nineteenth and mid-twentieth century, which exhibited very different concerns, the chief focus of the third quest for the historical Jesus is the Jewish background, setting, and context for Jesus' life and teachings. In addition to Jesus' teachings, the social sciences have supplied much of the backdrop regarding Jesus' surroundings.

The Death Of Jesus And The Death Of The Temple, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil. Jan 2004

The Death Of Jesus And The Death Of The Temple, Lawrence E. Frizzell D.Phil.

Reverend Lawrence E. Frizzell, S.T.L., S.S.L., D.Phil.

Whether he knew it or not, Mel Gibson touched on theological traditions formed long after the lifetime of Jesus in his movie, The Passion of Christ. To have them shape a movie that purports to tell a story set during the lifetime of Jesus – even if only in his last twelve hours – adds a confusing kind of anachronism to Gibson’s effort to “tell it like it was.” It (the movie) is as it (the history) wasn’t.
To understand the place of the Temple in the lifetime and the piety of Jesus of Nazareth, we have to look …

Wittgenstein And The Recovery Of Virtue, G. Scott Davis Jan 2004

Wittgenstein And The Recovery Of Virtue, G. Scott Davis

Religious Studies Faculty Publications

Modern, scientific, man doesn't see miracles, only odd phenomena that call out for more thorough study. Ethics, like the miraculous, doesn't defy scientific explanation; it just doesn't exist. In what follows I hope to do two things., On the one hand, I want to embrace Wittgenstein's rejection of ethics as theory, in the sense of a systematic body of knowledge about the world. On the other, I hope to suggest that this rejection opens up conceptual space for understanding ethics as a critical human enterprise.

Creating Space For Dialogue, David L. Coppola Jan 2004

Creating Space For Dialogue, David L. Coppola

SHU Faculty Publications

Judaism, Christianity and Islam teach that it is God’s will that all people live in peace with each other. Peace will be adequately advanced only when religious people and religious institutions are integral to the processes of social justice in every part of the globe. It is religion that can help to reach into the depths of humanity’s struggles and the heights of human accomplishments to salve such injuries. Unfortunately, dialogue for the sake of building mutual respect, understanding and ultimately, peaceful coexistence seems more difficult than ever, in part due to the resistance and obstruction by some who claim …
